It is an updated more elegant version of the late 18th century German folk dance called the Ländler (also spelt Laendler or even more anglicised Landler) which was popular in Austria and elsewhere in that region. It was a precursor of the waltz, being in triple time. Quite a few classical composers eg Schubert used it or wrote for it. It is a pretty dance which is still taught in some dance studios or can be learnt from online videos.
