I was blessed to study with Dr. Willis Patterson, who was Jessye Norman's voice professor at a point and also he conducted for many of her CD recordings of spirituals. This recoring has to be my favorite. And that is saying so much. I love her voice and I love Dr. Patterson senza fine....
An extraordinary a capella performance -- Norman's voice is so exposed, and all the more compelling. My favorite performance of this spiritual is Barbara Hendricks' with the Moses Hogan Singers. I am not saying it is better than Norman's; it offers a quite moving expression of the difference the combination of solo voice and chorus can make. How wonderful to have these two sublime performances as a legacy.
Barbara Hendricks' is my favorite too! I love most her album with Dimirti Alexeev, as well as her album with the Moses Hogan Singers. Truly some of the best performances of Spirituals!
Jessye Norman is a spiritual force reaching into the deepest part of the psyche. And she sings. This song was originally made popular by Lead Belly and later sung by Paul Robeson and Josh White among others. All versions are good. This one is haunting.
Simply beautiful!
Lovely voice!
Beautiful
What a beautiful voice. No voice has ever made me cry. I love her voice ❤️
