Hello my #joygeeks There's a lot of debate and fear around the compulsory use of sunscreen. They say if you don't wear it your skin will get ruined LATER. Really ? Have a look at my sunscreen story and i would love to hear from you in the comments for sure. Lots of Love, Aparna

The thing you said about farmers and workers is something that is undeniably true. I'm 19 and I've been struggling with sunscreen from 9. I could never keep it on my face without either sweating profusely or breaking out somehow. I believe it's all in our natural mechanism to protect ourselves from the harmful rays; we don't really need something extra to do that.

I always used to break out when ever I have used any type of sunscreen, I asked my dermat what is the solution to this, and he said not to use any sunscreen at all! I was so surprised. This happened in my twenties, I am now in my thirties and my skin is perfectly fine. I totally agree that it is not necessary. Thank you for this video, i hope it helps create awareness amongst the younger girls.

You dont need sunscreen because you have darker skin. Isn't it obvious? My skin is lighter coloured but I don't wear sunscreen because I always wear long-sleeves, a wide brim hat, and sunglasses. So don't tell people that sunscreen is not needed. People who have fair skin but don't like long-sleeves and the hat need sunscreen for sure! Exercise in general, and not just limited to yoga, improves general health, but it does not preclude the use of sunscreen. Exercising, and the use of sunscreen are two separate things, which means one does not lead to the other.

My parents have never used sunscreen in their lifetime but still they have great skin ! I mean, when they were in their 20s and 30s, there was never UA-cam or anything else to tell them about sunscreens 🤷‍♀ So I think from their experience even I've understood that not applying sunscreen doesn't really harm your skin from the beauty aspect of it because let's be honest no amount of anti aging bs applied can reverse the entropy. It's just beautiful as it is but of course if anyone wants to go for it, their call.
Edit : I've educated myself more and been exposed to brilliant dermats that I trust and I know that sunscreen is important but I'm not sure if it's anti ageing, just not letting the sun get to us but one tip : cover up for more protection than just sunscreen

Needed this so much. More of it is also subconscious, i think. I’ve seen women in their 40s n 50s having amazing skin and they haven’t even touched sunscreens.
Either let go of the fear of sun completely or do it religiously IMO. If you hang in bw there will always be a subconscious blockage. But this video was so relieving.

I'm watching it a year later I think. And I'm in my late 20s and I've never really used sunscreen much. I get very irritated with the sticky feeling. Even the ones that aren't sticky feels heavy on my skin and I just cannot tolerate the feel of it. So I found out that lotus sunscreens are lightweight, non sticky, matte and affordable (affordability matters for me). It's a wonderful formula works for a lot of people. So I began using that. It worked for me as well. It did protect me from unnecessary tanning too.
    But.
During the pandemic when I started staying at home all time, I stopped using it cz i used sunscreen for outdoors only. And as soon as I stopped using the product, my skin broke out. Bumps appeared out of nowhere. Not horrible ones just irritating ones.
I have to clarify at this point that I'm blessed with clear and smooth skin since always. I've never had acne. I used to have oily skin. But with years of neglect, it now dries up around my mouth and cheek apples during winter.
So, little bumps or stuff like that is completely unusual for me. I quickly realised it could be cz i stopped using the lotus sunscreen and to experiment I started using it again. Skin cleared up.
But now I was scared. My skin was hooked on a sunscreen without which it could break out.
So I stopped using it again and let my skin heal itself with time.
Now I'm scared to use another sunscreen and I don't use it anymore.
Skin health is absolutely fine. But yeah I get slightly tanned when I get to my home which is in the mountains where the sun sometimes feels like its stinging your skin.
But in the city, without sunscreen, life's better for me.
Although I feel like I should use something on my skin while going out like maybe a compact powder or a bit of foundation or something to get a layer between my skin and the sunlight. Idk if that's scientifically correct or just in my head.
Edit: Also what I was meaning to say is that, I totally agree with Aparna here. She's amazingly honest and her skin loooks beautiful.

As someone who wore a sunscreen in an travel and outdoor job. I still got tanned and burned 😊 Always been a skin care enthusiast so I bought the best sunscreens but they failed me personally. Last few years in marketing made me wonder if sunscreens had any real affect or were they just marketed well 😋 fear of the unforeseen future works for selling products across so many industries. I was very intimidated about Yoga for years and started it this year finally. Yoga has been a game changer specially for dealing with stress and random body aches

Hey, farmers and workers usually get wrinkles and Melasma at an early age..... As a biotechnologist, I use UV rays for sterilization, and the ozone layer is thinner as compared to a decade ago. concentration of UV rays now that we get from sun is so high, that if I don't use sunscreen I feel burns, Itching etc, and prolonged naked exposure of skin to the SUN causes melasma, wrinkles etc... So instead of a moisturizer use a sunscreen that also moisturize. It's easy for u

Genetics and lifestyle play a bigger role than skincare alone would. It's an additional preventive measure. My mom is turning 50 next year and she (rarely used sunscreen) hasn't wrinkled yet, but she has struggled with pigmentation and sun spots. Sunscreen for her has a made a change with respect to uneven skin tone. I put on sunscreen just to prevent the same issues my mom faces, bcoz genetics duh. If your genetics and lifestyle isn't favourable for your skin's health, sunscreen kind of becomes important. Ultimately a person having good genetics, less stress, healthy diet and oily skin would age better than someone who doesn't. Skin cancer should be the foremost reason to use sunscreen and not aging primarily. Since we are brown we are prone to aging gracefully compared to white ppl who have a higher tendency to experience skin cancer and premature aging. If you have found a sunscreen that feels comfortable on your skin keep wearing it. Also formulas have come a long way that sometimes putting on a moisturizer before sunscreen is not absolutely necessary (mostly for oily skin types tho).

Hi Aparna I totally agree with u. During my teenage I had lot of acne and my dermatologist told me to apply sunscreen which I used to hate coz it was like a white paint and eventually I stopped using it.
Years later aftr having kids I visited my ortho for an elbow pain and he very clearly said that we get all these pains coz of no sun exposure. The sun's rays should directly touch our skin which provides vit D and then that vit d helps absorb calcium in our body.
Without sun exposure we start getting all kinds of joint pains.
I too soak in the sun rays but not when it's very harsh.
Thanks Aparna for being so honest

Well..... Loved your way of talking and presenting your views, and I would like to thanku for going out of the box and pointing out the fact that SUNSCREENS ARE INDEED OVER HYPED
I live in Kolkata, and the weather here is kind of hot and very humid throughout the year expect for the winter months of Dec and Jan.
I am 25,and my skin is neither oily or sensitive but extremely acne prone,I do apply sunscreen daily on a regular basis TBH,but not when I am indoors in my home or when the weather is dull and rainy
Seriously speaking never understood the hype of wearing sunscreens at home and also reapplication every 3-4 hours......tell me how is it even logically and practically possible when a good sunscreen costs above 500 inr and you are just a simple student still managing on tight budget of pocket money....and also I would like to share that I only use sunscreen when I am here in Kolkata....when sometimes I go to my native land in Bihar during holidays I never apply sunscreen there and enjoy the sunlight there(coz there is so so so much less pollution and toxicity in air)

People around me also keep on telling me to use sunscreen and all to the extreme like indoors and every hours and all, which always make me question that is really that necessary, like do we really need it even when we are indoors? The trend of using innumerable serums, exfoliants, peels is absolutely unnecessary. The peels were reserved for certain treatments but now used carelessly by everyone... And even teens nowadays, it's sad.

Before agreeing to her, remember she has been doing yoga for a very long time. She carries a good lifestyle which includes diet, sleep cycle, exercise, yoga and all and plus, seeing her mother in that photo, she has amazing genes too. But 90% of us are not heading a life like hers. No certified dermatologist ask you to not to use sunscreen. She has good skin but it's a guarantee that had she been using sunscreen, it have been much much better. She herself said that she doesn't know the science behind sunscreen and how it effects our skin but the science and studies know them. 90% of us are not living life like hers so for majority of people, sunscreen is needed. Even I think that reapplication of sunscreen indoors is a bit excessive but it is required if you care about your skin otherwise who cares! Live the way you want.

@@JoyGeeks1 Hi Aparna! I think most of the influencers out there stress 'so much' on the need of sunscreen because they promote use of AHAs, BHAs and especially retinol in skincare. With these active ingredients in your skincare, your skin is more prone to sun damage. If you are not overdoing your skincare and keeping it basic, no need to use sunscreen on a daily basis.
I beleive that you should use a sunscreen, if you feel the need to. Someone with a fairer skin can burn on the beach unlike us brown girls. If you need it, use it. If not don't worry about it.
I also believe that sunscreen is hyped in skincare. My grandmother never used it and spent long hours in the sun. Her skin turned more radiant as she aged, trust me! She passed away at 82 just a few weeks ago. She aged gracefully. She was beautiful. My mother never used one until she turned 45 and sunscreen was all over the advertisement. She has good skin if not great. She is 54 now. I would choose my acne free skin anyday over the acne sunscreens give me. I am also not a dermat and can't comment on skin cancer cases linked to not using sunscreen. Haven't heard of many. As you mentioned, our farmers work their life in the fields and how many of them suffer from skin cancer?
This concept of sunscreen is a hype like other things we have picked from the west. They have different skin and different climate. They need SPF. I have benefited from cutting eggs, limiting dairy, increasing intake of veggies and fruits, taking 8 hrs of sleep and drinking ateast 8 glasses of water per day. GOOD SLEEP changed my life. Also, I have learnt that not touching your face prevents lots of skin issues. I do not wear makeup at home and let my skin breathe.I have been an acne sufferer. When I switched to simple skincare and made these simple diet changes, my skin changed for good. I would be honest with you that I do not exercise much but I am slowly incorporating that in my routine. 🙂 You have motivated me to do Yoga. Sorry for this long post.😘 Oh yes, and I am 36 and loving my that 'extra layer' free skin.

Then I've started using Lotus safe sun Uv screen matte gel spf 50 since 5 years and it really works for me. It's the best for my skin. Now I can't go out without applying sunscreen. Applying sunscreen indoors isn't necessary too as diffused UV exposure is way less harmful than direct UV. Lab muffin beauty science has busted a lot of myths about sunscreens and UV exposure. Both caused acne on my skin... I stopped using them (or any other) and then Avon and Oriflame came with new sunscreens and i started using them, love the avon one. It does but a lot of factors play a role, like not applying enough, the spf labelled on the product is not what the product has (inefficient testing practices) and sweating that causes formation of an uneven layer (no sunscreen out there is completely sweat proof).

I'm a huge skin care enthusiast. I have read and heard about various studies done to prove how UV rays damage the skin and how tremendously sunscreen helps in anti aging. Yet, I also know of many older people like you who have really lovely skin inspite of never having used sunscreen. It really must have a lot to do with lifestyle.
Previously I really hated sunscreens because of how they felt on my skin but recently I have tried out a lottt of them just to find ones that I like and surprisingly I did end up finding a few.
Although I do make an effort to exercise regularly and live a healthy lifestyle, I also make an effort to use sunscreen regularly because I don't want to completely neglect sunscreen just because lifestyle can do a great job.
Since I am a huge skin care enthusiast, I follow (and to some extent am influenced by) some of the extreme sunscreen advocates. I just love that you made the effort to speak out about your thoughts on sunscreens inspite of knowing the number of people you could have triggered. In the end, everything is up to personal preference and how each person likes to live their life and I love to hear different opinions.

@@JoyGeeks1 about how farmers and outdoor workers don't wear sunscreen and they don't get skin cancer. The only time I got sunburnt was when I spent 2 or 3 days all day out on a boat under the equatorial sun
Saw a video by dr. sean o mara and he talks about sunscreen and being outdoors too. He says if we hide away indoors, and eat junk processed food and have lots of inflamation, then our skin reacts differently.
Might have something to do with "use it or lose it" - so if we don't expose ourselves to the sun, we lose the ability to handle the sun exposure.

People push so much to use sunscreen when inside home, when surrounded by sunlight/sitting under artificial light. Somehow I never bothered to... Even if I wear makeup, I tend to skip sunscreen. I started wearing sunscreen when I go out very late. I probably will wear when I go outside, but not when I'm at home ☺ I agree about food that we take in.
One thing I follow with diet is don't think too much in terms of calories n fats. Worrying constantly about what's going in does more harm than relishing every bite. I want to learn surya namaskar n do daily ❤ Beautiful video!

Actually the sun is not the issue. Its the big gaping hole we have created in the ozone layer that would otherwise give us natural protection, that doesn't much do so anymore.
Personally I think as Indians our skin is used to heat and sunlight, since its a natural phenomenon in our climatic conditions. But in the west, where people don't usually get so much sun their skin isn't used to sun exposure. Which is why their skin gets so badly wrinkled, and even develops cancerous cells, when overexposed to sun, when they sit in the sun for hours on vacation.
Too much of nothing is good for us. Everything in moderation, and we'll be fine...more or less.
