Life expectancy for persons with HIV is approaching that of the general population. Starting effective combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) as early as possible, individualized to the patient's needs, is essential for extending life.
Advancements in ART have evolved since its first use in 1996 for people living with HIV, allowing for better suppression of HIV replication while being less toxic to the patient. This transformation has resulted in HIV infection, once thought of as fatal, now being defined as a chronic disease.
In this six-part series, HIV specialists from ICH Infectious Diseases Center Hamburg, Germany, review factors that clinicians should consider when selecting the best initial treatment for individual patients, including comorbidities, co-medications, and HIV genotyping.
