I am a Canadian and I have to watch France24 to hear what is happening in my own country. I would really like to see the expansion of hydrogen power. It seems to be the best low emissions option but needs serious funding.

Producing the hydrogen requires more fossil fuels than powering the train with a diesel engine. A lot of research is required before that can be resolved. Meanwhile some people will try to make money with this false solution. Journalists and politicians will join the bandwagon.

@@RoderickJMacdonald it requires electricity to produce. Electricity we have. Not enough to power the huge number EVs projected but enough to produce hydrogen. The more it is used the more it will become available. Toyota is working more towards hydrogen power than electric, and they pretty much started the move towards electric with the Prius. Transport trucks are moving towards hydrogen because electric trucks don’t have the range. Buses are moving to hydrogen because electrics require a large amount of power to start rolling and they have limited range.

@@RoderickJMacdonald my point exactly. We don’t have the power grid to run all electric vehicles that the government is shooting for. We DO have the capacity to operate hydrogen production plants.

@@davejohnson3773The train would be "greener" if it was powered by electricity instead of using electricity to make hydrogen because hydrogen uses more electricity to make. Than running it off electricity. The trick is finding a more efficient way to make hydrogen. That uses less electricity.

The problem with hydrogen so far is it usually is produced with fossil fuels. That's good to develop engines that run on hydrogen, but how was the hydrogen produced? If we can't find a source that doesn't emit greenhouse gases, we haven't gained anything.

It’s very possible that Alstom will very soon introduce a hydrogen conversion program for existing DMU trains that were built by Alstom or Bombardier. It would also be a very simple conversion as most DMUs are diesel electric however for it to work a lot more renewable energy sources would have to be built such as solar farms over existing rail yards and buildings.

😂 It takes more electricity to produce the hydrogen than it does just use an electric train. So it's actually less green than electric. 😂

    GREENPEACE PROTESTS:
It is unfair, green peace doesn’t keep to the Paris Accords. Green Peace hasn’t reduced her Carbon footprint, on the contrary it has a bigger Carbon Footprint, due to the exorbitant amounts of Protests.
Green Peace should also reduce her Carbon Footage so we can meet Climate Goals.

It's fine as an intermediate solution, but full electrification of the global rail network (using either overhead catenary or third rail) really should be the goal

Why should electrification be the goal? Electricity requires a power grid (wires, transmission towers, etc). Hydrogen requires a tank to carry it. Just as diesel or gas does. Use electricity to make the hydrogen and compress into the tank. Less infrastructure required.

Just use electricity to power the train directly & save the step required to isolate hydrogen. North America is so far behind when it comes to rail commuting that it's embarrassing. Vancouver's "greenest" Olympics could have built upon the existing railway to Whistler, but we expanded the highway instead. Absolute insanity.

This concept sounds great but i heard hydrogen electric cars can only reach a top speed of 120mph, this is fast enough but i don’t know the speeds the hydrogen electric train could do, does it have bigger hydrogen electric engines therefore go faster ? Most people are put off by hydrogen electric as their was an aircraft ballon incident ‘’ the Hindenburg I believe “ that exploded using hydrogen, if new company’s could guarantee safety i’m all for it.
