Hey wow thanks for posting these up. I am returning to the hobby after a 22 year hiatus but am quite experienced in other art forms. While I wont be following you step by step this was incredibly inspiring and wow you know your business sir. That dirty washed out watercolour approach is precisely what I was looking for.
I’m making my way through this series of yours currently and I’m really thankful that you’ve made it and shared it here. It works! Like you said though, you need a really light touch with alcohol. I was pleasantly surprised that this technique works with my collection of homemade washes made from acrylic ink, matte medium, water and flow aid.
Learned a lot from your videos. It has actually made painting easier/simpler for me. That’s because of my eyesight getting worse, so working with washes of different kinds makes a difference. Have even been trying “grimdark” on union soldiers for ACW, with quite a good result. Painting the soldier with GWs contrast paint and then a black/brown oil wash and some q-tip dabbing with white spirit. :)
I'd love to see you go at an Armiger Knight. It's right there in between big and small model, with lots of smaller details as well as big open spaces on the canopy etc. Visible moving mechanical parts as well as blank armour plates, and some shiny eyes and thermal weapons for lighting effects.

Quality video as always mate, bought the Adeptus Custodes Telemon Dreadnought video of TGdC and it's been extremely informative, I'm not following it exactly as I'm using a lot more acrylics and less oils but it's been extremely enlightening all the same, loving seeing similar content up here. For the paint-along model how about something like a contemptor dreadnought or perhaps a chaos knight?
im just getting back into the hobby and im seriously thinking of getting an airbrush to go ahead with this technique. im going to try and achieve the same look with brushes to start but maybe get an airbrush as soon as i can afford it
Very nice as usual. And again I've added a lot of this into my own mini painting as I like to bounce between extreme contrast and bright colours to a 'grimdark' look. I am eyeing up the new Adeptus Mechanicus 'mechanical horses' GW recently revealed. I think you could do something really special with those models. I'd love to see your technique on that archaic, steampunkish-tech. :)
Pretty cool, I really enjoy your fundamentals series, since it tells me the basic knowledge which I then can apply to my models depending on the model. And I do not need to watch all your videos to know which techniques are available to me. So I really like that they are not model-centric. Also, I am not sure of how many of your videos are "outdated" by that I mean which techniques in the video you are not using anymore or not that regular. Also, I am a subscriber to the grimdark compendium. Thanks for the videos.
Hands down best Grimdark guides out there! Very much appreciated! Can someone tell me if I have this straight, from the oil wash/nuln part, on the cue tip mineral spirits reduces the oil and then you switch to your alcohol to reduce the acrylic?
Hey, mate. Just started following you. I've been a normal acrylic painter for years, but you are inspiring me to do my Grey Knights in this style. I know you've already moved on from this series. However, what makes grimdark so grim (and dark) is the juxtapositions you can create with stories. Sisters of Battle - seemingly innocent purists in this harsh world is a great story. That's why I'd love to see you do St. Celestine in this style.
good day sir. I love the video and checked out your website and a lot of your videos. Now I am super hyped to try this out, cause I've been struggling with the gw style of painting a lot and honestly, your minis look way cooler and all the tecniques look more than doable. The minis look pretty much like the artwork in the old rulebooks and stuff. Really great man. Now I've been collecting Black Templars Space Marines for a while now, and I'd just LOVE it, if you did a tutorial on the Champion of the Emperor, cause it's my favourite GW mini by far and I'd like to repaint mine in grim dark style. I do have an airbrush (although it's not a super great one, It'll do) and all the thinner/mediums/alcohol stuff I might need. Except for paints (where I'd just like to use exactly yours from a possible tutorial video) do I need anything else specifically?

Just took my first shot at this - I’m wondering if maybe I didn’t shake up my AK Streaking Grime enough or something. Mine looks more greenish and not really as dramatically awesome as yours. I’ll have to try some more!
Hey men, I finally tried the streaking grime and the reductive tech. But the finish was supper glossy. I diluted the Streaking G. And immediately remove with the Qtip and more minerals. Do you think that was the mistake or maybe my mineral spirits are not good? Already copied your oils weathering thecnics, sooo good! Thx for everything as soon as the crisis stabilize will go to your patreons
Way to excited to try this out. Do washes made of paint act the same as washes made of inks? Or is it just inks that lend themselves to coming off with alcohol (in an artistically appealing way, like do paint washes clump up or something) As far as models anything eldar or dark eldar, as both are slick but would look cool darkened up. Striking scorpions or banshees My favorite miniatures that you’ve done are the troops with a simple pallet that gets crazy interesting with mottling and different washes
First off, i totally like your tutorials, they are very well made and followable! My question on it is, can i achive something similar, or at least in the grim dark direction, with just brushes? Unfortunately i can't afford an airbrush nor do i have the appropriate workplace for it so im limited to brushes for now 😅! CHEERS!
Dang, this series is awesome. Iliterally learned more about painting grimdark style from those 2 vids, than from gazilion other. Love the theory stuff, not just "take this, take that, do this, do that". Whatever's the model on the last episode will be, it's gonna be awesome!
You should generally varnish over transfers to blend them into the model, so once your varnish is dry it wouldn't be any different from from normal use.
as far as end tutorial models go, I personally think it would be incredibly useful to do a vehicle, a monster/fleshy thing, a power armored guy, and a xenos guy or normal human. It would show us essentially the full gamut of varieties of broad categories you can use this stuff to paint, and also give you a space marine to draw in more views.
Firstly, thank you very much for this series! I have a question: I dont have an airbrush, so I thought if it was possible to "wash" the models I want to do grimdark style with a brush and remove it with a q tip with mineral spirits. I guess it wont look as clean as yours, but maybe even extra grimey when doing it with just a brush?
Zatcasagoon. Can you do a grimdark "Destroyers" infantary? The models that really gave the middle finger to the Geneva Convention ethic? They're the ones who played with caustic chem-munitions, poison gases, and radioactive weapons. They sound grimdark enough.

Thank you!
I would like to see you paint Space wolf, of Black legion 40K space marine
Great vid also!
as far as end tutorial models go, I personally think it would be incredibly useful to do a vehicle, a monster/fleshy thing, a power armored guy, and a xenos guy or normal human. It would show us essentially the full gamut of varieties of broad categories you can use this stuff to paint, and also give you a space marine to draw in more views.
I would love to see how a space wolf would look like with that baby blue armor all grimes up.
You can use a brush. I do it all the time.
See a zatkass new video, press play, like video.
You know it’s going to be good
I appreciate you!!
Zatcasagoon. Can you do a grimdark "Destroyers" infantary?
The models that really gave the middle finger to the Geneva Convention ethic?
They're the ones who played with caustic chem-munitions, poison gases, and radioactive weapons.
They sound grimdark enough.
I think I would be cool to have a techpriest as the final model :)
