I have the Fittonia, too, and she is a drama queen, but I love her. LOL! My daughter gave it to me in March for my birthday along with a Pilea Dark Mystery and a Kangaroo Paw Fern. Also dont worry about you colocasia/alocasia. When they move into a new environment they lose their old leaves because they arent adapted to that environment. I have one inside and its about 1.5 metres high and it lost about half of its leaves, but it's going great and is so thick and luscious now.

I never repot my plants unless they seem like they're in trouble with leaves drooping not growing. I buy hypo NEX plant sticks they sell them at Lowe's and Walmart in different places even Dollar General. I put them in all my green plants that way I don't always have to remember to add fertilizer to the water. I've tried to plant sticks for orchids but that doesn't work too good in the bark maybe it would if I grew my orchids in Moss. But all of your pothos and philodendron will grow like crazy if you use the plant sticks by hypo NEX. It's not being spelled correctly but you'll find them there little white sticks about an intro to well more than an inch about 2in high and their bundled about 20 together but they are great. They're usually like 10-10-10 is the number but if you have flowering plants they do make one for blooming plants that has a higher middle number but they're sort of hard to find. Fiddle leaf figs do not like to be messed with so you're correct about repotting it. Another hint if you repot there's something that Lowe's sells called soil moist. They're little crystals that are polymers that absorbs 50 times their weight in water but they don't stick together they stay chunky. They absorb the excess water so it doesn't run through the pot and hold it in storage for the plan. It doesn't make the soil soggy in fact that keeps it from getting soggy the plants suck out the water from the little gel like Crystal and it goes back to being dehydrated. I use this all the time when I repot I also use it in the ground when I plant flowers outside. It expands and contracts when it absorbs water so it helps to keep the soil from getting compacted. When I use this in my plant pots especially the ones that I have rooted in water the plants do amazingly well good luck. I love your videos you're an amazing person very sweet

  • @AnimeShinigami13

you're going to need a bigger pot for that pepper. about 2 gallons should be sufficient. but a 6 to 8 inch and then one gallon as inbetween steps are going to be needed. I recommend searching Michael's, home depot or Walmart for terracotta planters in the right size. You're going to want a south facing window or a sunny location outside to get that pepper going. They grow slowly but in southern cali it shouldn't be in any danger. You can protect it from pests with a tomato cage and a floating row cover tied around the rim of the pot.
Aloe isn't the best for zits, yarrow or willow are supposed to be. I don't know how they fare in southern cali but yarrow is a woody smelling perennial flower with fern like foliage. The white and yellow ones are strongest. Willow is very easy to grow from cuttings and you can use pruning to keep it small. It grows at a seriously fast pace, I donated one I grew from a foot and a half high cutting that I was using as a bean pole (took root by accident!) to the local community center. In three years it was ten feet high and had to be massively pruned. Its making the old girl cranky but willows are very forgiving of physical trauma. Use the inner bark or leaves to make a tea and clean your face with it. Same with the yarrow, use the leaves and flowers to make a tea and clean your face with it. Willow contains asprin, so people with ghean barret (I can't spell it) syndrome shouldn't use it. It has use in the garden as well, using it as mulch encourages root growth.
I have had a high death rate for avocadoes using that method. I've found that burying the pit in sifted compost has a higher survival rate. Just let the top circle stick out. See sci show's video on why avocadoes should be extinct for an explanation. The potato and sweet potato are vulnerable to mold. mostly bury them in soil with the top exposed and keep an eye out for flies and fungus gnats, which LOVE the nutrient rich tubers.
You can cut the potato up, but remember that that tuber is a food storage device. The less you cut it the stronger its staying power. Potatoes love growing in compost, find a nice looking container with a hole in the bottom and a lid and start filling it with food scraps. Put the hole in contact with the ground and keep it from tipping with bricks, pallet pieces ect so the worms can go in and out or even partially bury the bottom. Potatoes plants will grow and flower into long dark green plants with pretty white flowers and then die back. When they're brown and crackly thats when you dig up the harvest. Potatoes have short, medium and long lived varieties. The purple varieties are almost all long lived but they are amazing and stain your knife purple they are so vivid in color.
You can also buy an uncle jim's worm farm, which can be kept inside and is neater than most home made bins so landlords are more likely to accept it. A thousand redworms will consume a pound and a half of food waste in a day and turn it into fertilizer.
You may need rooting hormone for the large leaved cuttings. They don't look happy at all tbh. The cut tips look like the plant cutting is cranky. When you do get roots, mix willow leaves into the potting soil.
Your hanging basket planter... it shouldn't for awhile. If you see black discoloration on the planter that's mold. Clean it with white vinegar, same with cleaning the inside. I like to use boiling water or water and dish soap for sterilizing planters but the former is out of the question. That lining will melt and clog the drainage hole or break where grommet is keeping the drainage open at the bottom. If that grommet connection to the plastic breaks its only a matter of time before the planter will mold. White Vinegar is a superb mold killer for tile, tub, wood and wicker.
You could make cuttings out of the smaller dracaena shoots. This keeps them away from your dog and makes backups in case he really really screws up the tree. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone, plant in clean soil from the store, seal them in clear plastic bags with twist ties and put them in a sunny window. This also slows the drying out of the soil, but its mainly to protect them from pests.
You can get mushroom logs inoculated and prepared to be mounted or hung, including shitake which make good broth and some inedible but glow in the dark varieties. Do NOT get mushrooms if your apartment is vulnerable to fungus gnats. Its like sounding a dinner bell. The mushrooms are the first course, your plants are the second, third, and main banquet.

@@JoleneFoliage I like watching your videos, and they help me because I'm more vegetable and pollinator focused than houseplant focused. So excuse my dropping another massively informative text wall. There's some ideas and resources here to help you branch out.
you're starting from the inside and slowly heading outside. I'm doing the opposite, starting in the vegetable garden and working my way to the propagation table. I've been gardening for 5 years and branched out to volunteer at the local community garden. It helps that I don't have much money, because that forces me to make do.
I suggest spending an hour a week reading about plants as far as study goes, I have books and mother earth news magazines. Its a library carefully built up one 20$ bill I shouldn't have spent at a time. my stepmother gave me a subscription for mother earth news for Christmas when I had a four or five inch high stack of their magazines :). I look at history to be my guide as well as Botany, and start looking into the geography of where my plants are from. And some of my best books have actually been gotten for a dollar or less, sometimes even free, checking library discard piles, used book sales and thrift stores.
I love the house plant places in your area that you go to, I especially loved the flower market you filmed at. But don't forget that yard sales and thrift stores could still net you a really good haul when it comes to books and equipment. My neighbor got me two full sized Earthbox rolling raised beds and a bunch of medium to large pots for 10$ at a yard sale, those Earthboxes were brand name and together would have cost 140$. Three or four years later they're still as good as the day I got them. Cost is no guarantee of quality. And if you don't want to waste gas or parking money just use google to find their number and pick up the phone.
Finally I'd like to encourage you to branch out. In LA you have a lot more opportunities than I have in Massachusattes. The days are longer, the winters are warmer, and plants that just don't have the season length to grow here have plenty of time where you are. There are many brightly colored vegetable cultivars out there, so you will not lack for color. I've seen tomatoes so dark in color they're almost black and peppers grown in Holland that were yellow and red striped. I've seen carrots that were vivid purple and lettuce that's so rich red it looks like it was colored with wine. I've seen dwarves and giants and every size and shape in between. There's no reason to worry about looks growing vegetables. I suggest Baker Creek seed company and territorial seeds if you want to order something special. And trust me, they have plenty of somethings special.
When you're ready to branch out check out MI gardener and CaliKim29. I think the latter is at the northern or central part of the state but I'm not sure. But her techniques are adapted to California and she's closer to you than I am, so you might be able to visit her in person. MI gardener meanwhile has turned his whole basement into a grow room and grown his own coffee trees in his living room yielding a whole pound of home grown green coffee.

You can get those moss poles on Amazon! I haven't done it yet but I really want to. I know pothos looooove to climb up like that! I've seen some people that will take cuttings once the plant climbs above the moss pole, and they just stick them back into the pot so it grows more vines upwards and gets bushier! :) Good luck!!

Pets eat plants because new growth is sweet to them. It is candy to them. You can purchase a tray of wheatgrass at Albertsons in the produce department for your dog or purchase the seeds and grow your own. Early spring I found my dog stopping in everyone's yard to take a nibble when we went walking. It always concerned me because some yards were disgusting. Fortunately she never got sick.

Love your watering can. There's a lady that lives in Canada and her sight on UA-cam is Jacqueline's orchids. It's a combination of her husband's name Jack and Carolyn is her name. But Jacqueline is spelled with an O not the way my microphone just printed it. She has all kinds of interesting things that she's bought at flea markets yard sales and has repurposed them with her plants. She also has some Oriental decor mixed in with her plants that you might enjoy. She also has a greenhouse in her backyard that she starts her tomato plants and pepper plants in and she grew her pepper plants from seeds. She has an orange tree and a lemon tree in her Greenhouse it gets to maybe 20 degrees below zero where she lives. She's a very interesting lady I'm sure you be interesting and watching her videos. Most of them are about orchids but to see how she repurposes things as planters is very interesting. I love love love your watering can I'm going to look for what just like yours

    Hi
The white pot stuck with saucer at 21:05 video, it didn’t have hole on the bottom of pot or saucer couldn’t come off because saucer was as a pot. How ? Did You put soil in and a plant in and water with out hole ? Correct? Not need hole in the bottom then? Please let me know because I have few pot with saucers. I put a plastic pot into. Thanks.

Eva-Maria B pots like that have a drainage hole in the side where the pot attaches to the saucer.

I have a small drainage hole on the side of the pot. I don’t put my plants in anything that doesn’t have a drainage hole. :)

Love how you are so detailed it's a huge help for me. Do you burn incense I was wondering if it's bad for plants?

    • @JoleneFoliage

I don't burn incense, but I do light candles! I'm not really sure the effect on plants, but I always keep my windows open to ensure good air circulation!

Nice tour! The plant at 5:02 could be a Euphorbia trigona (African Milk Tree). 🤔 Which means it's not a cactus at all! 😛

Hey, I did the same with my Selloum philodendron and still no roots (it’s been about a month) how about yours, any roots?

    • @JoleneFoliage
      @JoleneFoliage  5 років тому +1

Mine died long time ago.. lol... Stem cutting won’t work for aroids, they need at least one node, or you can do root division. Mine was just a stem, so it couldn’t root.
