WOW this is fascinating!! When I learned the Chinese martial art know as Hung Gar, I was confused about what Hung meant. There was a magazine article that said it meant 'red', my KF instructor said, "where did you hear that?" and showed him the article by one lam tsai wing...Sifu shook his head and said 'what a shame', and showed how Hung or Hong sounds the same but is written differently, and that it really meant something like Strong or Flood - I now want to ask him about the Triads - but my god, what if he is a member lol!

The way I learned it, low level goons would take Kung Fu for one or two years to become more adept at violence. Serious students would take up medicine, bone setting, and acupuncture. Because they would have gained a lot of experience with injuries.
A Sifu would likely have some contacts, but wouldn't be an active soldier.

Also, being a tonal language with many different accents. You could have been dealing with an honest mistake where the character Hung could have been pronounced Hong

@@ChinaHistoryPodcast oh hung, not hong, I see. Well, googling "hung men" definitely didn't help.

You mean the Jurchen (Manchus) were not "Han"... They did found a Chinese dynasty - just like the Mongols did. Han are just the major group.

Yes, Han Chinese comprise the majority. But Manchu's made it to the Top 56 Ethnic Minorities
