I went to the Union City public school system in the 40's and 50's when the entire student body were native English speakers.The ethnic change since then is huge but I am glad to hear that the kids are getting a good education as we did way back then.
Union City is that village that raises a child. Education is very important to their community. The children are their main priority, everything is done with the children in mind. There was a young boy, his behavior and school work changed, for the negative. Instead of the principal disciplining, he spoke with the child. To find out, the child's bike had been stolen. They child did not what to tell the names, but in the end he did. The principal then went to the home of the accused. Spoke with the parents and was able to retrieve the bike. Now i don't know what happened after that. But what i do know is both children learned there are people who care and getting to the root of a problem is more important than pointing, blaming and punishment. Oh one more thing, they also had ESL classes in the evening for parents. Also, faculty was always available to help parents understand what was going on in the schools & the community. Parents were given laptops so they can access to the educational dealings with regards to their children (i believe the laptops were donated). Mayor Stack has done wonderful things for & with Union City. Every city could use a few pages from his book.
