Steve you are a legend. I'm fixing my 5th honda generator now and had absolutely no experience with these things before I started watching your videos. You have taught me so much. I hope I can pass on the knowledge you have taught me . Brilliant channel.
Jeez Steve....I fell fowl of that governor on my 20 year old Honda lawnmower engine! I thought I was gonna grenade the thing.....I shut it off and it's still running two years later! I can't get enough of your "pearls of wisdom" bruv! A big thumbs up from the United Kingdom!
Steve, you just made me look like a hero in front of my wife here trying to figure out why the rototiller was revving so high. I agree with Sam here - I’ve learned so much from your great straight forward vids. Less head scratching and more time getting stuff done (meaning more time drink a beer or two at the end of the day). You rock, man. Thanks for what you do for us all.
Steve i am a home depot tool tech and one of our compactors was revving unreasonably high. Took me forever until i saw you adjusted it with the throttle pulled all the the way. Thanks!
Got a screaming GC160 today and wanted to double check the governor arm position because high RPM for me has always been either a spring binding or a linkage issue. Didn't find either so I adjusted the governor as you showed and it brought the engine back to spec! Thanks again!
You saved me. Thank you. I don't know much about small engines. I replaced my carb but the engine was racing. I suspected maybe the governor, but didn't have a clue about them. I followed your instructions (minus the beer) and it is running like a top.
Haha, who needs a governor when you've got my videos? Just kidding, governors are pretty important. I'm glad my instructions helped you out, even without the beer! Cheers to a smooth-running engine!
Thank you Steve, this was the only place I found that helped me with the governor issue with my pressure washer. Went to full throttle after carb cleaning and I couldn't understand why. Made this adjustment thinking there's no this is going to make any difference, but alas, runs like new!
Just ran across your channel yesterday while working on a carb on my pressure washer. I have already watched 5 more of your vids. Great vids. Many thanks!
Thank u Steve for this video my gc 190 has a no throttle rod I use my power washer to clean my pool liner I did tun the governor to the right I must use for 30 mins of so that thing was screaming when I was releasing the gun it was showing like 5000 rpm .Yesterday I did remove the gas thank and tun the governor on the left see what happen .Am shure I was close the burn the engine ..😉
Hey Steve this is Kyle burning down in Mountain Grove Missouri and I just really want you to know how much I appreciate your videos on how to tune up the small engines I’ve got a pressure washer With a 190 Honda on it that I was going to raise the RPMs up a little bit so perfect video I really trust you with all of your good advice man buy you a beer anytime brother thanks
Steve! just wanted to let you know your awesome and so are your videos. watched a lot of mechanical videos and yours are the best. thanks for helping me set my gov on my gc190 after i changed the carb. The internet diyer's owe you!
Steve, The Man, the Myth, The Legend!! Was having problems with my GC160 screaming and came in to see if you tackled this problem. Sure enough you did, and I did what you showed and now I'm back in business! If you ever come down to North Florida let me take you out for a few cold ones. Sounds good, eh? Thanks!!
Fixed my generator, installed it with new carbuerator but engine is racing in high revolution resulting in high rpm and uncontrollable speed, luckily I see this video and Voila! It worked, special thanks to you, drink a can of soda after repairing my generator haha.
I enjoy your vids and I learn from them - I like your clarity. I grew up in central IL and we had a PBR brewery there. Everyone considered it swill, but here we are now - it's become the bomb - who wooulda thought? With all the selections available I seldom drink it now, but I like it fine and it tastes like home somehow.
Thanks to this video, I got a GCV 160 powered pressure washer running properly where it's not racing. It has a bit of a hunting (surging) problem but it runs better now. And it's pretty much brand new.
I just restored a Honda GK200 and couldn't find any info on this, had to tune it by logic, and this was exactly what I did. Awesome video as always! Cheers from Portugal!
What is your opinion about the Honda GX390 and Loncin G420? I want to buy a wood chipper and I'm leaning towards the Loncin, however, I have a Honda GK200 that has been with me for more than 20 years. Please share your opinion about this! All the best to you!

Aaaannndd you are easy on the eyes. Maybe next video in a tank top? Just messing with you. Thanks so much. P.S. Natural born woman writing this.
If it wasn’t for your tips, this one included, i would have a big repair bill. The governor, the chain saw brake reset and a few others have made my life in the the boondocks much easier. Thanks a lot. If i could ever figure out how those pre-bent carburetor linkages go on i would consider my enlightenment complete.
Thank you for this video I didn't know the governor even mattered if it was adjusted, this video might keep me from blowing my engine apart, thank you.
Thanks Steve!! I had replaced the carburetor on my Honda HS520 snowblower and when I started the engine it was revving at an astronomically high rpm. I spent a weekend trying to figure out what I screwed up before I googled your solution. 5 mins later it was purring like a kitten.
Geez, and I thought the small rotational movement of the Gov was just "Slop". Thanks for that Small but Huge Detail. I owe ya a beer and BTW, my name is Steve too.
greetings from the Napa Valley Calf. You really know your stuff. I do small engine repair basically on4 cycl only now. Might get back into 2 cycle or 4 mix later. What is interesting is the disinformation out there. I did see the dude telling you to adjust rpm by the shaft adjust in increments. I know your videos are accurate and right on. You have no idea how helpful you have been to me in some of the problems you help me with. Thanks Steve
Usually you rotate the governor shaft in the same direction you push the governor lever. In this video Steve pushed the governor lever to the right to ensure no slop in the linkages in the WOT position. He then turned the governor shaft clockwise. When you are done you should be able to push the linkage and there should be no binding, you will feel spring resistance. If your binding, adjust the shaft in the opposite direction. Always check your manual for what your working on. If you get it wrong the engine will race-shut it down immediately!!!
I had to turn my governor shaft all the way clockwise and my lever all the way to the left then tightened it to get it running semi properly… almost seems backwards to me, any advice?
If you're going to be making world famous videos Steve, at least use some pliers that dont look like they were from the bottom of the bird bath!😅😅😅. Great video, has probably saved many engines from destruction. Certainly helped me out with the GCV160. Cheers, Peter from Aus
Man you saved my life. My foolish uncle started messing around the engine without even looking up what might be the cause of problems. Now I have to repair it after his "repairs". I owe you a pint of good beer
Brilliant I can try this on my Honda 536 I guess the procedure will be the same. Watched one of your other videos saying don't touch the governor but too late I already had and go into a right mess.
Dude please explain how the governor works and why we actually need it, I know but does anybody else watching it now, LOL now you get to crack open your second!! Thanks for the video Steve
John jay drott yes. But I don't think many people out there understand the importance, OBVIOUSLY if you can understand him, and most do, I am talking about the ones that think it's ok to give it a tweek. And let her roar. I need more speed on the wood splitter, or I need more pressure on the power washer.
I'm not trying to be an ass here, and I hope I'm not taken that way, but I have no idea what it does. I'm taking a stab after watching the vid and saying it's like a RPM limiter. I've just started working on small engines and Steve's vids have helped me big time! A governor is useful also in keeping the engine at a constant speed. If your throttle is set wide open and it comes under load and then slows down the engine the governor will then open the throttle more to give the engine more power and then when the engine starts to speed up it will reduce the throttle until the engine reaches maximum speed again. April 1st 2022. OK did the governer bar and adjusted that know with pliers on the Troy bilt 130 I got it moved a 1/16 of a turn. Then did the governer arm bend to rev it up to 3000 rpm. I'm a idiot to this stuff. But did it with patience . I put a cleaned carb back on and it was revving at least 3500 rpm.. anyways Steve help and patience it's done...and it just started raining here in North Seattle.
I love your channel. Thanks for another great tip. I was having a Canadian made Michelob Ultra while watching. It’s a real great beer. Also drink Busch beer too, dammed fine as well. Thanks again, cheers from Manitoba Canada.
You are amazing, but I’m sure your wife (girlfriend) tells you that just about every day. You videos are fun to watch and your explanations can’t be done any better. Thank you so much for your channel. BTW, I’m still getting excellent service out of my handmade crystal clear glass coffee mugs. Great buy thru a great guy. Thanks Steve
Thanks a lot Steve, had a high rev issue with my power trowel that has a GX270 i know its not the exact same set up but you greatly helped me get an idea of what I needed to do to fix the problem, thank you again.
Question ⁉️ my prusher washer runs when im holding the trigger on the gun down it runs perfectly. But when i let go it cuts off any advice because im really confused
Steve , your great ! Maby you have already covered this, could you gear up on the subject of what causes ignition coil failure on small motors, thanks.
nice simple video steevo,,,,,,,,,,,thanks a lot.......you're a lifesaver.........it's been so long since i've done one i sort of forgot,,,,,,,,,,,your vid refreshed my memory which i am losing,,,,,,,,,,you did reteach me,,,,,,,,thanks.
Hey Steve great video with simple instructions! Unfortunately I followed them exactly and my engine revved to the moon… I have the same exact engine for my pressure washer and my solution was to tighten down the lever all the way to the LEFT and the shaft all the way clockwise, this solved my over revving issue but what I did is opposite of your instructions, any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Brilliant Steve, thanks a million. I applied your method to a Homelite HL454SP mower which had a screaming over-revving problem, over here in the U.K. Amazingly, it did not cure it. But you had given me the confidence that I'd set the lever arm correctly. It made me look elsewhere. Eventually I spotted that a sharp edge of the control arm was fouling the PVC sheath of the throttle/choke control cable. I used a cable tie to re-route this cable well clear. Great, docile running again. But I could not have done it without you. The manual was useless. This problem makes me think. On some machines, cables flap about all over the place and doubtless can cause a variety of problems when they foul controls. Have you found that? And do owners try to tie them down, provoking further trouble? I imagine many mowers have hit the garbage dump because of this. Is there scope for a UA-cam video on taming the control cable snakes?
do I need the PBR too? funny, yes you taught me something because I had no idea what the governor is for in the first place. I have a Landa pressure cleaner with a gx200 honda, and I just replaced the carburetor, but I did not adjust the governor. I don't know if it is necessary?
I’m surprised you don’t need to scrape the old gasket sealer off more. I would have wasted a lot of time picking away cleaning the old material off. Great videos. Chief out
Thanks again Steve! Doing this today after a crankshaft swap. I used to drink WAY too much PBR, now I only smoke weed. I figure I’ll be done in just a few puffs…
My Briggs 3hp mower will surge in rpms while mowing. When you stop the forward motion and pull to backup. It’s odd and has done periodically but last time it was most of the mowing job. I’ll give a blow out and check tank for some water or see if gas line in tank has a crack. It’s probably not a big deal but if you have a suggestion, great. Thx
Hey Steve, thx for the video but do you have one for the GX120? Mine revs to the moon and before she blows upon I had to shut it down and put a zap strap on it to hold it in a lower revving rpm.,
Steve, does the governor mechanism fail on the inside of the case very often? Ive got one that just wont adjust, it wants to race no matter where set? Thank you.
Steve my honda gc190 don't have a throttle lever, it seems to be all automatic. It runs fine but for this project i want it to run lower rpms. I wish it had a throttle lever. Is there any way to change the automatic setup to run lower rpms??
Hey Steve I need your help brother....I just rebuilt a gc160 and everything is how it's supposed to be but its got really high rpms. I can adjust the governor EXACTLY how your supposed to and it does nothing to help. It feels like I need to be able to turn the governor shaft more but it stops
Just wanted you to know, 5yrs later, and you're still doing God's work, thank you!!

Thanks steve...experience from a professional. Better than all the reading i have done to find the right answer.

Thanks for that information you put it very simple to understand and to do.
You're Welcome...
Good job,
Question.......What do think about the honda GX630 horizontal shaft engines that are on the northerntool north star 13k portable generators ?
Ripper! Thanks for that. Fred's you Aunt? Wow never heard that before. Hope that's not a Canadian thing?
I have a gc190 pressure washer. It starts but chuggs and then stalls. Saw your video and will test it out and see how it goes
hey steve great video i seen lot of your videos there lot of good information. thank you from california.
You're Welcome...
Got a 190 brand new on pressure washer...carb hunting always and burning fuel...what ya think?
Thanks again Steve! Doing this today after a crankshaft swap. I used to drink WAY too much PBR, now I only smoke weed. I figure I’ll be done in just a few puffs…
Thanks Steve, worked like a charm!!!!
You're Welcome...
Mine revs to the moon and before she blows upon I had to shut it down and put a zap strap on it to hold it in a lower revving rpm.,
Love your videos! and by weird coincidence--was working on a PBR when I watched...lol
Right on Buddy...
Fixed the problem, thanks!
You're Welcome...
Hey Steve I need your help brother....I just rebuilt a gc160 and everything is how it's supposed to be but its got really high rpms. I can adjust the governor EXACTLY how your supposed to and it does nothing to help. It feels like I need to be able to turn the governor shaft more but it stops
Good deal thats totally necessary on these motors, Pbr👍
Thank you, sir!
