I was in high school when Bloodsport was released. Van Damme redefined martial arts like no one else aside from Bruce Lee. He demonstrated the strength, precision, and flexibility of Martial Arts. Never before had someone did full straddle splits between chairs, built an amazing body, and filmed some of the best kicks ever for that time.

Choreography of his fight scenes was actually quite basic.... To redefine something is a big claim.. Bruce Lee redefined martial arts.. Van Damme did not.. He has great, iconic movies that redefined the western action movie industry, but not martial arts. I'm Japanese and half Chinese and was raised by my martial arts practicing parents.. My father practiced Shito-ryo Karate, and Wing Chun, for over 30 years.. My mother did Tai Chi Chuan.. I grew up around martial arts.. Redefining it takes more than doing the splits and kicking high, which is all Van Damme could do.

His cardio must be insane anyone would be stupid to pick a fight with him seeing as he knows martial arts and has insane cardio to strength ratio, thats why steven segal ran from him in 2 different places lol. As for redifining martial arts I never said he did 🤷♂😆
Van dam is widely impressive and the way he shoots his scenes and the best editors he uses, his fights, controls, and the contributions he puts in his movies are all wow.

JCVD is a true underdog and a inspirational person. he was at the top of Hollywood in the late 80s and early 90s. unfortunately he fell due to a cocaine addiction. However, he has IMO, more that made up for his mistakes. who else in Hollywood or out of Hollywood can you say has a genuine heart and kindness for others like JCVD? regardless of what people may think or say about him, he is still my hero and someone who I look up to. JCVD is a warrior, and has the heart of a champion.

But you also have to understand...Akido when you see it in film or demonstrations is very choreographed. What happens when your opponent isn't "going with the flow"? :) Is stronger than you..faster... In the Expendables they have Randy Couture from the UFC...he's the real deal...super strong and excellent technically. I'd say if anything he would be the "ass kicker" of the bunch and now with E3...add Ronda Rousey. She's pretty strong and technically proficient. Ex-Olympic Judo Gold medalist...Or was it Silver? She did medal.
