The first four (rupa) Jhanas were exclusively discovered by Gotama Buddha, the rest four formless (arupa) Jhanas existed before him and were part of the spiritual culture of Greater Magadha.
Yes, first 4 jhannas are roop jhannas and the rest are aroop jhannas. But problem with those samadhis was that they begin by imagining an object or by creating an object by ourselves, they were not focused on seeing the reality of things as they were. Buddha corrected those jhannas and developed 4 jhannas on his own in which he included Sampragyan( witnessing the phenomena as it is, without reacting to it).
