The greatest anti war film. Tight brutal unyielding and firing squad is as good a sequence as Kubrick ever shot ever with a special effect or irony in sight.
Totally agree Ken was amazed how this film still holds up. You really feel that bond between Kirk and those doomed characters. It’s the ultimate tale of the injustices of war; no matter what you do or how brave you are, you are at the mercy of that system. That firing squad scene is perfectly timed. The last scene is also very famous; one that Spielberg has referenced time and time again. And that transfer wow. Only company I can forgive for going bare bones on special features is Kino simply because these Kubrick restorations are incredible. If you’re a fan of film one should also own the Criterion for the features but for the transfer Kino is must own. I’m floored by how incredible Some Like It Hot, The Killing, and Killer’s Kiss look on my OLED. I recommend Ken if you see Killer’s Kiss below 15$ on Black Friday, pick it up. Yeah it’s a short movie but watching it again now I actually enjoyed it more than previously and that transfer is smoking. Cheers!
Sounds to me like I’m sticking with my Criterion Blu-ray. I honestly don’t think their 4Ks are an upgrade over Criterion Blu-rays. It is just my opinion
I have both and the image is a huge upgrade from the Criterion. In back to back comparison the Criterion is just washed out and flat looking. Definitely worth the upgrade in my opinion, but still worth keeping your Criterion for special features!
I'm content with my criterion blue ray 💯 I bought the killing on 4k because I never got the criterion. I skipped in the heat of the night 4k because I have the criterion blue ray. That's how I'm going about picking and choosing my physical Media targets.
I felt the framing and cinematography was way ahead of its time in many scenes. Super grim message but one that keeps you in suspense until the last few scenes. The transfer itself is so well done and really shows as much detail as one can expect from a top level B&W film. Fun tidbit is Kubrick married the only woman who appeared in the film.
I dont need both the blu ray and the 4k disk. Not including the useless blu ray keeps cost down. Pretty sure this is $25 or below which for a boutique 4k title is a good price!
13:52 Including the bluray is not just a cost thing, very often the bluray rights are owned by someone else than the 4K rights. If the Criterion isn't OOP then I guess that means Criterion still has the region A rights.
ARE YOU GOING TO REVIEW THE "STAR TREK: DIRECTORS CUT" 4K BLURAY WITH ATMOS?? I WANT TO KNOW IF EXTRAS LIKE 1983 THEATRICAL TV VERSION AND THE ORIGINAL 1979 MOVIE ARE ON THE REGULAR 4K DISC -or- IF THESE EXTRAS ARE ONLY ON THE EXPENSIVE BOX SET?! BECAUSE ONE REVIEWER SOUNDS LIKE ALL THESE EXTRAS ARE ON THE REGULAR "CHEAPER" 4K BLURAY, BUT, ON STAR TREK-PARAMOUNT WEBSITE LOOKS LIKE THESE EXTRAS ARE ONLY ON THE EXPENSIVE $100 BOX SET; WHICH IS IT? PLEASE REVIEW, LET ME (US) KNOW. THANK YOU. THIS IS PAUL. AUGUST 30, 2022 (TUESDAY)
It's a great movie, and definitely a war movie. Politics is a huge part of war, can't separate the two. This just chooses to focus a bit more on the politics. I might pick this one up since I don't have it in the collection in any format. Great video!

Hi Ken, Great Review.
The Best Picture Winner for 1957 was...The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean)
The director made it to show how horrific war is and how soldiers aren't looked at as people during that Era. This movie is actually banned in France.
The Shining, is my favourite of Kubrick movies.
Great great film and Douglass is immense in it
I got this one on day 1. Looking forward to watching it.
You'll really enjoy it!
Great review!

@@nickharris5231 Thank you very much Nick! I really was hoping for an honest comparison. Appreciate it!
I still need to get The Killing 4K. I'll need to revisit the Kubrick filmography before ranking it
Notice the head of the Tyrell Corporation (BladeRunner) in this film? :)
This is a super underrated movie …nice review Ken
Bridge on the River Kwai won Best Picture Oscar of 1958 as well as six others and deserved them all. Check out the brilliant 4k steelbook.
It does look outstanding 👍👍

I love arrow and criterion, but with the releases of the past year I think kino has been my favorite company so far.

Yeah. Just confusing when some have them and some don't, yet the cost is the same.

Very good point.
More than likely I'll grab this, been really enjoying Kino's catalog. Just got another Kino 4K in the mail this morning, Hard Target.
