It's not so often that a country-western singer performs at the USA's capitol. Merle Haggard did real good performing there in 1982 at the White House for then US President Ronald Reagan & his wife, Nancy.

I bought my very first VCR to record this. I got home, set it all up, and realized too late that I was missing a cable. Didn't get to record it, and it's NEVER been re-run. It's also never been been issued on VHS tape nor DVD.

Okie from Muskogee is a song that is sometimes thought of as satire but at the time he wrote it in 1969, he did mean it. Although he was a California kid, his father was from Oklahoma and he wondered if he were still alive what his father would think about what was going on. “And I wondered if Muskogee had a college, and it did, and they hadn't had any trouble - no racial problems and no dope problems. The whole thing hit me in two minutes, and I did one line after another and got the whole thing done in 20 minutes." In the American Masters documentary about him, he said, "That's how I got into it with the hippies.... I thought they were unqualified to judge America, and I thought they were lookin' down their noses at something that I cherished very much, and it pissed me off.”
Merle Haggard’s views changed over the years and he did use marijuana himself. But the song, to be clear, was NOT written tongue in cheek.

Shoulda took Johnny Gimble instead. He played with Hag for Nixon. At least Hag had Jimmy Belken on fiddle. O'Connor is a poser.
