I’ve crossed that bridge many, many times and now I can not cross it without thinking of this scene and remembering a great love that I have lost yet remains branded on my heart. The name is different that I whisper, but the regret, the praise and the prayer are the same. Thank you Pat Conroy for writing this beautiful story.
as a Son of the South with a flaws; i too live with regrets of having 2 lives, i chose the path of least resistance & now with days that are long & the years are short & memories rush thru my soul of what should`ve/could`ve been with "Terri" not was not meant to be !
I adore this love story... too true to real life, where often true love takes a step back to life's commitment. however in spite of this fact, they each embraced their unique love and became better as individuals. (cry cry cry)
Oh yea so poignant so real Barbara was a great director for this movie and Nick just carried it so well what a beautiful movie even though that one scene was hard to watch I had this movie in my mind the whole time when I went to South Carolina last year didn't go over the bridge but saw the title planes in the marshes I did go over a bridge and this was all I could think about
This movie was filmed, (south), in such a beautiful area. The McTeer Bridge, (Highway 802), was reportedly the bridge he traveled over every day & the beach house was on Fripp Island, SC. This was a great movie & Barbra Streisand, Nick Nolte, Melinda Dillon & Blythe Danner were excellent.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It truly speaks to the human experience. However, I do understand the confusion with Tom's words here. If you've loved someone for 15 years as opposed to 5 years, wouldn't that technically mean more? I know love isn't measured that way, but I understand how some are viewing his statement. Good thing Lowenstein understood exactly what he meant.
Although they committed Adultery, in many ways Susan "Saved" Tom's Life. She helped him get a big burden lifted off of his shoulder, she reassured him it wasn't his "fault", he's happier now more than ever and he can give his Daughters The "Daddy" they so richly deserve to have who are probably married with Children of their own.
I was shown in movie in high school but back then I didn’t care for it. Then as an adult I projected transference in therapy and remembered this movie.
@@Jejemon-vibes Tom is telling Lowenstein that he loves HER more than his wife, but he's loved his wife (throughout their marriage) longer than he's known and loved Lowenstein. Not more ... he makes that clear. Tom and Sally have a history together, with kids, and that's what he's returning to even if it breaks his heart because he truly loves Lowenstein. This is why Lowenstein smiles ... because, despite the heartbreaking goodbye at this moment, it means that what they shared (though brief) was real.
It means that he doesn't love his wife more than he does Susan, but that he has known her longer ... So basically he's choosing his wife over her only because of his long-time commitment to her and the fact that they have a family together. And not because he loves Susan less. That's what he's saying
What a bunch of shit! I mean c'mon #1 a therapist would never barter services #2 nor would a therapist have any friendship let alone romantic encounter with a patient. She would lose her license and thats the best case scenario not to mention possible civil and maybe even criminal implications
Kirk Whalum playing that sax is EVERYTHING!

Nick Nolte’s performance was brilliant, sexy, exciting and spot-on. He should have won an Oscar. Just perfection.
You are so right...perfection.
Far and away his best role!
"As I reach the top of the bridge these words come to me in a whisper, I say them as a prayer, as regret, as praise, Lowenstein, Lowenstein."
One of the best movies ever made. That Streisand didn't get an Oscar was one of the WORST mistakes ever made by the Academy. Shame on them!
Wonderful movie! To be someones first love is great but to be their last is both perfect and soul-satisfying.
I adore this love story... too true to real life, where often true love takes a step back to life's commitment. however in spite of this fact, they each embraced their unique love and became better as individuals. (cry cry cry)
Not to mention the movie is wonderful, I think Barbra looks so gorgeous here ❤️
Oh so gorgeous...you are so right.
This movie is absolute perfection❣️
Those last few lines, so poignant, so beautiful. Perfection.
Streisand did a brilliant job and got an amazing performance out of Nolte. James Newton Howard’s score is gorgeous too. And I loved her son Jason too
One of the best sax solo's in existence!
But, which´s the song´s name?
Pete Christlieb?
@@Pedrojoji for all we know. Donny Hathaway sings the original.
it is weeping
Johnny Hartman sings the original…Jennifer Hudson sang it at the tribute to Kobe Bryant at the NBA all star game after he died…
“Not more, just longer.” Best line ever

This movie is so beautiful…. NICK… you southern gorgeous man. You should have won. In our hearts, you did.
Kirk Whalum's sax is perfect for this romantic scene.

All in the hands of Barbra a director extraordinaire and how could she not help falling in love with Nick just a little bit

Barbra never more beautiful...she and Nick Nolte both deserved Oscars.
Excellent movie!!!
One of the best books I've ever read.
"Not more, just longer." Wow....

His wife was sleeping with another doctor. They were pretty much separated. Susan’s husband was a cheating POS .
I agree. He did the right thing.

Why show this in a high school. I can’t get the logic of that. Were you studying the novel.?
Barbra FANTASTIQUE
I love this movie
Fantastico film .......Streisand meravigliosa 😍😍😍😍
Just longer - I said it once , it smashed me then and the memory of it smashes me till now.
