  • I'm finally reading this big classic! In my first week, my goal is to complete Volume 1.
This week in War and Peace…
We’re introduced to our principal characters, some leave for the war against France and Napoleon, while others stare down death and suffering of a more familial kind.
A book on many readers’ bucket lists, this hefty Russian novel by Leo Tolstoy clocks in at a whopping 1,200+ pages.
Last summer I read Tolstoy’s other famous novel, Anna Karenina.

I think you have the right to judge books by their covers.
    There. I said it.
Why? Because of the wonder and joy you feel when you pick up a book that catches your eye. There's something that speaks to you directly. You might decide to make it face out on your shelf, like a piece of art with a story inside.
Graphic designers like me are hired to inspire those feels!
On my channel I talk about books are shelf-worthy, inside and out, and the ones that are worth giving a second look.

📕Is there a big classic you’re reading this summer? How’s it going?

War and Peace is on my TBR to read this year. I have the same edition as you as well as another penguin classic ed, I think it's the same translators. Love your drawing btw.

The translators are my fave - made Anna Karenina fearless for me!

Your edition is so pretty! I'm in the middle of a reread so I'm looking forward to your videos to hear your thoughts and to hold me accountable!

Thank you! The publisher is Vintage, and they make some very pretty but easy to handle classics ☺️
Any characters or subjects that you’re noticing in particular on your second time round? And did you annotate your copy the first time you read it?

@@covergirlbooks Yes! My favorite character (believe it or not) is Fedya Dolokhov but I've really been fascinated this time around by 1) poor Marya and 2) the thoughts of the soldiers fighting. I feel like I skimmed so much my first time around that I didn't pay attention to the war at all. (For the record, I'm enjoying it SO much more on my second read.) And I never really annotate but I've been toying with trying it lately! Maybe I'll give it a go!

@@laurencutrone4057 Interesting! 1) There’s a theme of men who want to meet the right woman, someone who will make them a better person, and Fedya is one of them 👀
      2) That’s so cool! The descriptions of the war are so tedious until there are conversations 😂
