- Beneath the Cross of Jesus-Hymn Sing
Four verses: Three in Bb; One in C
(This one is a little lower than others. Please forgive my piano-it needs a tuning.)
Beneath the cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand-
The shadow of a mighty rock
Within a weary land,
A home within the wilderness,
A rest upon the way
From the burning of the noontide heat
And the burden of the day.
There lies beneath its shadow,
But on the farther side,
The darkness of an awful grave
That gapes both deep and wide;
And there between us stands the cross,
Two arms outstretched to save,
Like a watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.
Upon the cross of Jesus
Mine eyes at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me.
And from my smitten heart, with tears,
These wonders I confess:
The wonder of His glorious love
And my unworthiness.
I take, O cross, thy shadow
For my abiding place.
I ask no other sunshine than
The sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self-my only shame,
My glory-all the cross.
Words: Elizabeth C. Clephane, 18872
Music: Frederick C. Maker, 1881
#JesusArmy 🎉 Always Beautiful 😻 ❤
Hello again Geri and thank you for a lovely Holy Week hymn. Please, and everyone reading this, pray for all Americans who are and have been estranged from their Christian Church homes at this important Christian festival of the death and resurrection of America's Savior.
David, praying for all those, around the world, who have experienced hurt from their church experiences. God is bigger than our disagreements and can heal. Blessings on you in this Holy Week!
So beautiful so touching .
Thanks so much! And thanks for listening!
Thank you, Geri! I have not heard this hymn in many years. The melody and words are so precious to the ear especially round Easter time now. 🙏🙏
You’re welcome, Eugenie! It’s one of my favorites, as well. Thanks for listening!
