    Depends on time of year for produce. Always cheaper in the fall and this vid was done in October of 2012. Prices are usually highest in the winter. But still reasonable. Impressed with produce section; well stocked and very clean.

    Price is not that bad now compare to a decade or 2 ago. A little more expensive than most inland states but most of them are "okay" price tags. How about the price in seafood, salmons in particular (my favorite)? Competition is what drive the price down a bit. How is other living expenses in Anchorage AK (rent, housing price, clothing, tax, etc)? How much do you make an hour on average working in say McDonald? Thanks

    I agree. Anchorage probably has the closest lower 48 (rest of the US not including Hawaii) prices in Alaska. Much higher in the southeast and interior. Extremely high in the remote villages.

    The prices are close to Jacksonville Florida... the greens (Swiss chard, etc you showed) was cheaper than the greens available in Publix here and the ones that are usually available are NOT ORGANIC. The ones that you showed were organic. I hate Florida. lol

    • @mayaandjohn
      @mayaandjohn  7 років тому +2

      Thanks for the comment and information. Every winter I start looking at warmer places to live and Florida is on the list. It might be a bit too crowded for me though. After living in Alaska for a while I'm not a big fan of the larger cities/states. Thanks again and take care.

      Tasty Drinks Florida is not a shit hole there is a lot of amazing beaches and springs here and some of the best fishing in the world you must live in the ghetto

    • @julianne2saw
      @julianne2saw 5 років тому

      @@gonefishing9023 be honest , many parts , country parts too are awful. if you compare it to alaska, but it also has its good points. I live near Milton fla, a 5th rate mess but growing with no plans or coordinated intelligence, so its an awful mess but it is much cheaper for taxes and for now, you can pretty much build anything if you have an architect and if i could afford it which i cant right now, i would build an earth sheltered home, it is very wooded with some rolling not quite hills but we do what we can. but if the wealth of a country is in its people, well, its meth land , all corrupt, recent mayor recently arrested for stealing nearly a million from United way over a few years, etc. and mostly less than average intelligence resulting in ciggie butts everywhere and no refreshing alaska type people to have any sort on convo with. I cant handle cold so this is my compromise and it will lhave to do.

    Everyone says how the prices are so much higher in Alaska, but truthfully, most of what you showed, I paid the same in Maine. The apples were a bit higher, corn was just a tiny bit higher, but the potatoes were way cheaper...which is crazy cause Maine has potato farms. Store looks a lot nicer than many stores in Maine, so that's nice to see. Course, I looked at prices in Barrow just to see....holy cripes...how do people eat in Barrow?!?!

    • @mayaandjohn
      @mayaandjohn  8 років тому

      +SerenityGamesToo I haven't been to Barrow but I know just about everything (rent, utilities, food, etc.) is expensive. People see the good paying jobs in the remote areas but don't realize how expensive it is to live there.

      if you think about it though, states in the upper part of the U.S are expensive which explains why Maine, New York, Alaska (etc) are expensive and can relate to each other..

  • @MrGlendale111

    The store looks very clean and well stocked. The prices are not bad at all, for being in Alaska. I know most everything cost more there. I don't know what time of day this is in the video. The store seems very empty, compared to other Walmarts I have been in. I don't see all the trash types I see in much of the USA.

    • @mayaandjohn
      @mayaandjohn  8 років тому +1

      +brazil5657 The prices in Anchorage are usually the cheapest in the state as we have air, land and water transportation. If you go into the remote villages then of course the prices sky rocket. As I recall the video was done in the early morning so that's why there aren't many people. Thanks for the comment and take care.

    Prices are a little higher on some items than the lower 48; but no where near as bad as I would have expected. I lived in the Fairbanks are in the mid to late 1970s, and at that time the difference in prices with other places in the U S was shocking.

    • @mayaandjohn
      @mayaandjohn  10 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. Anchorage prices are probably the cheapest in Alaska with most of the stuff being shipped on barges. Prices were probably higher in Fairbanks because of the oil pipeline boom in the 1970s. Take care.

    no need for high prices! build a world infrastructure : freeways, freight trains modern commercial ports connecting ALL OF ALASKA. That should drop the prices down so the common person would be able to afford.
    They should use to state oil money/fund to build all of this - this is plain stupid = in America? Germany would have done this 100 years ago. do not say it is not possible. they built the primitive Al-Can highway.
