SA was good but they came up in a time when Australia was transitioning, West Indies were continuing the decline that started in the early 90s, england and india weren't good travelers and england were suspect at home even, pakistan was a mess and terribly inconsistent and SL were not good travelers. NZ was a very weak side during those 8 years as well. but you play whose in front of you so fair play to them

Vernon Philander is a great fast bowler. With a perfect repeating action, he had the ability to swing the ball out and cut in in and together with impeccable line and lenght, he was a very difficult proposition for the batsmen, particularly on the seaming wickets of South Africa
