You nailed it. Ive fished my whole life and caught just about every inland fish out there but when I went out on the big lake (Michigan) i was completely out of my element when it came to actually feeling in fish for the exact reason you mentioned. Plus, the guide didn't appreciate my hook setting technique learned through years of bass fishing. Lol. Hardly any hookset at all required, just enough to release the line from the downrigger. Typical bass fishing hookset either ripped the bait away from the fish or snapped the line. Not a happy guide at 20 bucks or so a rig. Lol. Reeling in a fish while the boat continued always resulted in the fish surfing on top just like in Chris's video here. Felt very awkward but you live and learn.

He didn't have the first fish pop off the dude pulled the lure out when he went to go net the fish. I have done it myself. You need to scoop the fish not strike at it. Also holding the net part tight with your front hand. Then as you reach out drop the net so it clears everything. Scoop down towards the head of the fish. Don't scoop them at the end of your reach. Also point the end of the net up when lifting. Lift from the net not the arm.
