I lived in Thailand and received many Thai massages. I was always curious why Thai massage felt like a spiritual experience, like I was connecting with the person giving the massage. This video helped me to understand my experience. Thank you!

I had the honor and privilege of studying with all three teachers including Mama Lek and Mantak Chia. Now only Arjan Pichest is left. Arjan Chaiyuth and Arjan Pichest were the real masters of there craft. Arjan Pichest massage is slow, deep, no skin burn like the element Earth. Arjan Chaiyuth was energetic, light and deep with lots of skin burn like the element Fire. Arjan Mama Lek was earthy but included nerve, tendon plucking and chiropractic adjustments. Arjan Asokananda studied with both Chaiyuth and Pichest but incorporated Yoga. I would liked to study more with Asokananda but I usually traveled to Chiang Mai during the rainy season which made it difficult to get around on the mountain roads. Mantak Chia was the Taoist master that incorporated all 5 elements in his practice, amazing man. I sure miss the old days of wandering amazing Thailand searching out healers.

Wow, what a classic! When I met Pichest in 2002 he was much younger than I expected, after so many stories about him, but he looks so much younger here! And the wiry old Chaiyuth that I came to know with ragged teeth and scraps of hair and rambunctious flair, also so young in the video. And the most prolific Asokananda, who I became acquainted with during his brief visits to Pichest's, was still working on the ergonomics that later students, particularly under the tutelage of Pichest, would continue to improve. Like a typical westerner he looks so stiff in his movements, and yet he personally along with early students and Kam Thye Chow put thai massage on the international map! Thanks for sharing Shai!

I see a lot of correspondence with an ancient medical system of southern most part of India. It is called Varmam, which also has these 10 lines and works on the energy body pressing at points with various manipulation techniques using different parts of the hand and feet as instruments. It also has many traditional medicines and oils to go with it including a naadi reading at the wrist pulse using fingers with which the expert called Aasaan (Achaan) can accurately determine what spot is affected and when happened and determine curative measures. This ancient system is being revived and brought to light. Luckily the palm leaf manuscripts have been preserved by families and traditional institutions which are now being made available.

Thank you for enriching my understanding of beautiful healing mindbody work with this wonderful video. I never really understood why Thai massage was ever named massage at all. It really is not massage! I hope to bring more of these ways of practice into my own work.
    thank you again.

Very happy to hear it! Who to study with really depends on what you're looking for. For general classes I would suggest looking up Old Medicine Hospital or the Sunshine Network. Another one to check out, especially since you're already a bodyworker, that comes very highly recommended is SEA Bodywork: www.seabodywork.com/

Jīvaka is a figure head for Thai massage not because he invented or inspired Thai massage, but because he was Buddha's doctor and Thailand is a Buddhist country. All Thai medical professionals therefore honor him, not only massage therapists or herbal medicine practitioners. Also Traditional Thai medicine is not the same as Ayurveda. They are different systems. I am only 3.5 minutes into this video and already there is so much misinformation. It is unfortunate but not unexpected.
