  • Sermon on the Mount E22 - The first half of the Lord’s Prayer features three requests on behalf of God and his Kingdom: he is our Father in the skies, whose name we recognize as holy and whose way of life we want to see on the land. The second half of the Lord’s prayer focuses on four personal requests, where we seek to align our needs with God’s wisdom. In this episode, Jon and Tim discuss the first request of “daily bread” and its connections to stories and wisdom in the Hebrew Bible.

What I love so much about this part of the prayer is the totally dependent heart posture it’s hitting on. It’s what Paul is hitting on later in Philippians. No matter our circumstances, rich or poor, we need to recognize our total dependence on God for what we need.

The depth of your relationship with God is directly tied to your willingness to let go of your need for control and self-reliance. The more you embrace your limitations and weaknesses, the more room you create for God to work in your life and draw you closer to Him.
This is beautifully reflected in the Lord's Prayer, where we pray 'Give us this day our daily bread.' When we ask for our daily bread, we're not asking for a week's worth or a month's worth, but just enough for today. We're trusting that God will provide for our needs, one day at a time. And in doing so, we're acknowledging our dependence on Him and letting go of our need to control everything. We're creating space for God to provide, to guide, and to work in our lives. And that's where the deepest relationships with God are formed - in the daily surrender of our self-sufficiency and the trust that He will meet our needs.

'God gives Eden in the wilderness one day at a time. When we have more than what we need for the moment, it lulls us into complacency and self-orientation.' (30:32) 'Jesus invites us into radical trust for provision.' (40:38) It's such a delight to hear the truth. Thank you, BP Team!

I think another way we might look at it is that when we're talking about just the minute in the desert story, they did not yet have an obedience or hearts that were turned to God with love for God! So God was just barely getting them started! Whereas King Solomon and David and those who later had abundance through God, had God in their hearts first, for long periods of time!
But in the desert with the Israelites, even when he first sent them to the promised land and gave them homes that they did not build, clothes. They did not make, Fields. They did not plant, etc... He was trusting them to be given these things and be loving of the Lord God first before they turned to something else to trust in.
Because God trained them and taught them and guided them in the wilderness to teach them how to follow his ways and why they should trust him and love him! With all the miracles like the men! But if that didn't work, even over time, he finally Led them to the promised land to say okay. How about Let's try this instead, and see if you can Love me!
it wasn't God's failure for trying! He literally been over backwards and did everything under the sun to try to get the people of Israel to love him and trust him and turn their hearts toward him! From providing for them everyday, making his home among them, walking among them, delivering them from their enemies, giving them free stuff in abundance... He did everything for them! And still they fell away from him and would not turn their hearts to him.
But these other situations I think when we're talking about the New Testament and later in the Old Testament as well, with the Kings, often are regarding individuals who first trusted and loved the Lord, and therefore they were working with a different kind of heart or a different kind of set of beliefs in God that the Israelites didn't have yet in Time of Moses!
They had not been raised up to love and trust God and they would not let their hearts be converted.
Whereas in stories of the New Testament, it seems like The parables are more in alignment with those who have already had the opportunity to start to get to know God and his ways! And because of that it tends to deal more with iniquity instead of trying to build up new trust in God, New relationship with God, new understanding of his ways, Because they had not grown up in a culture of godliness exactly, while they were living in Egypt! They had been growing up with the surrounding Egyptian culture which did not believe in God, so they constantly return to those old practices and belief systems until God could start to weed it out of who they were as his people!

Another great episode from the team! Thank you.
One aspect of the Lord’s Prayer that is easy to overlook is its missional nature. This isn’t a prayer for those who are just getting on with their lives but asking God to bless them as they do that. It’s a prayer for disciples of Jesus whose lives are to be dedicated to the invasion of God’s kingdom on earth. They are to be salt and light (Mt 5:13-16), they are to seek first the kingdom (Mt 6:33) and, of course, the first three requests in the prayer are about reorienting ourselves around God’s plan to bring heaven to earth (Mt 6:9-10). With regard to today’s episode, note that in Matthew 10 Jesus sends the Twelve out on kingdom mission with the specific instruction that they are not to take any resources with them (Mt 10:9). So, as they go, they will have been praying “give us this day our daily bread”, because if their Heavenly Father didn’t, then they would literally go hungry! The rest of the Lord’s Prayer also makes a lot of sense when viewed from the perspective of those who are going out on kingdom mission. They will need to be forgiving towards others who reject them, forgiveness from God for when they fail, protection from trials that may be too much for them to handle and deliverance from the assaults of the evil one.
When you consider that the Twelve’s short term mission is envisaged by Jesus to be a prototype for the whole Church after his ascension (Mt 28:18-20), then you can see what a wise and necessary prayer Jesus gives to his followers.

29:10 Great episode. I like to add my voice in this section. In relation to Numbers 11 and Exodus 16. I believe Jesus idea was abundance and that your father is rich enough to supply you. Most people hoard or gather much because they don't believe the supply would be there tomorrow. So basically they have this mentality of God can only supply little and it might not happen tomorrow. And God might watch me starve. But never our Father has more than enough

About the bread “of the moment,” provision for my “right now”…the famous Psalm 119 concept of light to my path feels similar. A light to my path is “for my right now step” rather than a map for the month (to run with John’s idea of not asking for provision for the month). I think the Prov 3:5-6 formula hits this way too…God will guide your steps if you do the previous things. But not “God will give you a map for the month.” You have to take the “step of the moment” and He will guide that step. God seems determined to stress that He wants us in full submission to Him, that our total existence relies on Him, and that He provides that (the Good Shepherd of Psalm 23). Give this day what we need to survive this day.

I really struggle with this brothers and sisters. Please pray for me. I feel so bad about my actions all the time and what I think I deserve that to me there is no way God will give me something nice but He does.
It's pretty sad to live like this, it erases all his blessings because my heart always feels like at any time He will abandon me, no because He's not faithful but for who I am.
    Pray for me, I'm tired.

Proverbs 30:8-9 can be seen as a complementary prayer to the daily bread prayer in the Lord's Prayer
"Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread" (Proverbs 30:8-9)
This prayer is asking for a balanced and humble approach to life's needs. It's saying:
    - "Not poverty" - I don't want to be in a state of lack, struggling to meet my basic needs.
    - "Not riches" - I don't want to be so wealthy that I become complacent, proud, or forgetful of God's provision.
    - "But give me only my daily bread" - I want just enough to meet my daily needs, trusting in God's provision and care.
This prayer complements the daily bread prayer in the Lord's Prayer, which asks for "our daily bread" Both prayers are acknowledging our dependence on God for our daily needs and trusting in His provision.
By asking for "neither poverty nor riches," we're recognizing that our security and hope come from God, not from our material possessions or wealth. We're also acknowledging that too much wealth can lead to spiritual poverty, and too little can lead to physical poverty.
By asking for "only my daily bread," we're embracing a mindset of contentment, gratitude, and trust in God's provision. We're saying, "God, I trust you to meet my needs today, and I'm grateful for what you provide"

Jesus said that he is the true bread from heaven. We can do nothing apart from him. His Holy Spirit is also what we depend upon every moment. He told Satan “man does not live by bread alone, but by every word from the mouth of God.” Our physical and spiritual lives depend on our Lord God, Christ Jesus.

23:50 Days 1-5 (“My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: )
Day 6 (So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.)
Days 1-6 (My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.” Proverbs 3:1-12, KJV)
Day 7 (“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm. Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous. The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.” Proverbs 3:13-35, KJV)

What about the proverb about the Three servants that were given money by the master, and the one that did not invest and grow the money for the master, did not seem wise to the master.
But in this case, it looks like God is asking us not to invest in the future and save up for a future, because he told them not to save anything, or plan ahead!
I understand that they are probably talking about two different things. But if you apply either of these to financial circumstances, these two parables seem to teach opposite of each other!
However, when you apply them to growing the kingdom of God and trust in God, they make sense on their own, individually!

I get my true daily bread at Mass. Please review the translation and add an explanation. It was " super substantial Bread". The difference between communion in a Christian church and Eucharist received at Catholic Mass (the true origin of the Bread turned into the Body of Christ0 is that communion only refers to the reception of a host or bread and wine not the true reception of Christ entirely because the lineage of the Priesthood was broken with Luther and Christian ministers do not possess the all important laying on of hands during ordination. Please refer to the Didache (Chap 9) as it clearly points out the followers of the Way receiving Eucharist at every Mass from the death of Jesus. Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum!

Why use "debt" as the the translation for pesha (sin)
It feels impersonal and more transactional. While it might historically be accurate. I feel "betrayal" has a lot more weight and personal and emotion behind the spirit of what we're getting at.
Let's recite the Lord's Prayer using "betrayal" instead of "debts" or "trespasses":
"Forgive us our betrayals, as we forgive those who betray us."
Take a deep breath and let the words sink in. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that arise. You might feel a sense of:
    - Regret for the times you've wronged God or others
    - Remorse for the pain you've caused
    - Gratitude for God's mercy and forgiveness
    - Empathy for those who have been hurt by your actions
    - A desire to make amends and start anew
Notice how using "betrayal" instead of "debts" changes the tone and feeling of the prayer. It's a powerful reminder that our actions have consequences and that forgiveness is essential for healing and growth.
Would love to hear your insight on this. Thanks for doing these breakdowns I really enjoy it
