Man, I'm not even finished RotE and I wanna re-read Liveship Traders (& Farseer & Tawny Man) so badly. I'll get to Rain Wild Chronicles soon though, maybe after a few more GGK standalones 😅

I absolutely agree with you about this chapter. Many people dismiss fantasy novels as being nothing more than frivolous escapism; but a lot of these novels do deal with themes that really make you think. The Liveship Traders is one of my favourite series. One of the things I enjoyed most was reading about Wintrow’s experience of trying to understand and be accepted by his crew mates. I’m autistic, and my own experience of trying to integrate with the other children at school was not dissimilar. I felt a lot of sympathy for Althea too. One of my favourite scenes is the one where Ronica finally realises that convincing Ephron to give the whole inheritance to Keffria (and therefore to Kyle), was a really huge mistake.

There are lots of things that are truly frivolous escapism, from society gossip rags to televised sports, but fantasy is as capable of exploring serious ideas and themes as any other human activity and better than many.

Wow, now I cannot wait to reread this book because I never really thought about, but now I think I would see it differently (even if I hadn’t seen the video I think I’ve changed quite a bit since I read it for the first time). I actually expected this to be the chapter where Wintrow chops his finger off. Also, I like the idea of a chapter spotlight. I am extremely jealous that you have the Grim Oak Press edition.

Thanks, the Wintrow finger chapter is also one of my favorites in the book, I will definitely continue to do these extremely sporadically..like very very sporadically

Excellent video, I loved this scene and it definitely gets buried in all the other SoM talk

I haven't read ship of magic and I just watched the whole video

Well you don't read books generally, so that's expected

Ah yes, chapter 32 of Ship of Magic, I of course know exactly what happens in that one. 😆
I didn't at all, until I opened my copy and saw the chapter title "Storm" when I DID in fact know exactly what happened in this one.
You totally included that remark just to remind me how abnormal my experience with this series is, I know it.
Anyway. I LOVE all the points you made in this and agree whole heartedly. Gantry IS a good man. We know he's respected, we're shown that he does his best to care for the men under his authority, and in this chapter we see how troubled he is by having gone along with turning Vivacia into a Slaver.
What ❤Hobb ❤ is able to do in this chapter is make real the sentiment "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing". Like you said Jake, most people in the world are usually pretty decent. It's actually rare to meet someone who's just an asshat. Yet, so much in the world is unresisted following of unjust rules.

If I was picking one person to know what chapter it was it would have been you in fairness.
Gantry is honestly page for page one of my favorite characters in RotE, he has 1 PoV(maybe 2?) and yet he has multiple lines that have just stuck with me
And yes, Hobb's exploration of complacency being what causes mass injustices and suffering to exist is probably what specifically makes Liveship my favorite subseries. I know it is also explored in other Hobb trilogies, this was just the one where it hit me the hardest and impacted how I think about how I interact with the world the most.

This video reminds me of a philosophy class I took at college, I think you may like the book it was based on, Modernity and the holocaust by Zygmunt Bauman, it explains how it could have happened. The ultimate participation in evil by the average German soldier and surprisingly for me the Jewish leaders.
This video was great timing for me I just read Liveship for the first time. Mad Ship had another chapter that I had to rewind the audio several times:
    Spoiler for Mad Ship:
Right after wintrow severs the leg and Kennit is going somewhere else and how Vivacia intercedes. That was..whew… Hobb going somewhere new!

That does sound interesting, I haven't read really much non-fiction since I graduated but if I get to some I will look into it
