  • Returning to Qatar with just months to go before the first-ever Middle Eastern World Cup, I examine whether this small country in the Persian Gulf peninsula is ready to host the biggest tournament in the world.
Give it a watch and let me know what you think, if you like ❤️

To be fair, the FIFA that allowed hosting rights to Russia and Qatar were a different team headed by Blatter, obviously corruption took place. I would hope that FIFA now, under Infantino, isn't so bad as the last team and that the hosting rights are more thought through rather than who has the most money, we'll soon see.

Didn't expect this sort of content and I would've hoped you'd questioned not just the people working in Qatar, but the FA delegation too. Only a quarter of the way through and there's huge holes in what's been said regarding accommodation. Firstly, they're aren't cheap options going around (that was said by the FA people) and Qatar have encouraged people to give up a room to allow fans to visit but by doing so and the demand being large, they're extortionate too. There's a good TIFO Football video based on accommodation if people want a more realistic view on what's actually happening with that.
Edit 1: Further on when talking about the worker's welfare and wages, Gary does raise his concerns and talking about the disparity in pay between workers and the people running everything there was a good thing to put in. I thought it was looking like a fluff piece with you talking about issues in minor detail but I was wrong about that. I guess that's also just "culture that has to be accepted". The jailing rape victims culture.
And that's just one terrible things out of a hundred. Gary asked about one issue that is controversial, and that was about the treatment of workers, and it was half hearted and he got back to licking boots of his Qatari paymasters in no time. One issue. Out of so many. And why? Because he gets payed by BeIn, which is owned by the Qatari government. This is a propaganda puff piece, glossing over all the issues. So much still to do but the change in the last decade has been incredible. There is a massive ideological divide from the Middle East to the Western world. Many here would still argue that some of the more fundamental issues faced in the last 20 years were directly linked to clumsy Western intervention in the decades before. The changes to these developed nations linked with the justifiable criticisms from the Western media are helping to bridge this divide. I wouldn't write off this World Cup just based on how it looks right now. It could be a pivotal moment to look back in 50 years time.

I was in Qatar for a night in June (missed connecting) and July (connecting, so only airport). I stress I was there for a night and early morning. The place is nowhere near ready. It is an out of worldly place driving from airport to downtown/ business sector. Beautiful building galore. But it is just not ready. So much construction was being done.

So little is made of this and we have to judge ourselves by the same standard as we judge everyone else.

Having read some of the comments I wonder if people really watched the video? Neville highlights both good and bad about where the World Cup will be played. He also spoke openly about some of the "issues" around the staging of it.
A lot of the questions were around having a drink and taking your top off etc, a western way of life... but as the little guy he spoke to in the stadium commented, people are travelling to another country. Which does have different values - and not all negative values - but every country is the same. All countries have their own unique set of values. If you chose to enter a country you choose to live by their rules... for a week or so of your life. If you don't accept the rules then don't go. Simple.
With regards to Neville himself signing a lucrative contract to broadcast their - what is the real issue? Is he suddenly making a quadrillion times more money than anyone else that is out there? Probably won't be the best paid of the broadcasters there yet he is being strung up for being there, regardless of his paymaster. He has clearly aired his views against some of what is being done there and will probably continue to do so. The fact he is getting paid handsomely is neither here nor there as everyone out commentating on the World Cup is getting paid silly money regardless!
If no one is there to highlight the differences in culture then how can change ever really happen? Check out the video on Overlap with Pique, he talks about how the World Cup in '82 in Spain helped push forward massive change - they were transitioning from General Franco's dictatorship. Football helped accelerate change.
At the end of the day, Qatar is a Muslim country with Muslim rules. It will be up to the youth from that country to ultimately force change and that won't happen without the eyes of the World on them.
Getting back to football however, the 1994 World Cup was held in the football powerhouse of USA!! A team made up of American Football players and armatures essentially. No one could possibly expected much but it was easily the best World Cup in my living memory (41 y/o).
The question is, was it the venue that made it such an iconic World Cup or was it the fact that the teams in general were fantastic?
The last 4 or so World Cups have been dire. Not because of where they were held, but because the level of football now is far less than it used to be... and the players are on ridiculous wages... {but as it isn't Qatari paid wages then it is ok to get £500k a week}. Pots and kettles and all that jazz.

Gary probably realised that Qatar has its own way of living and the mess which is Europe isnt the standard to achieve.

@@samueldavids3704 "Has it's own way of living" is just a diversion to avoid saying what that phrase actually means: inadequate workers rights, huge wealth inequality, oppressing women and making being gay literally illegal. But those things entirely indefensible which is why you constantly hear people say things like "respect their culture" to avoid discussing the issues that the country has.

    • @samueldavids3704

@@estrathdee565 Wait. Who are you to say they have inadequate workers rights? What is that absed off and what do workers rights in your country look like (especially for foreigners)? Huge wealth inequality resides n every country. The difference is the ones who earn less in Qatar are making a lot of money (unlike the west). Qatar do not oppress women. That is a misconception born in the West. You could argue women in the West are oppressed, hence why they are miserable and find themselves arguing against their male counter parts on a dialy basis.
Making being Gay illegal shouldn't be your problem either. If you want to practice homosexuality, then go elsewhere. How have you decided adopting the gay culture is moral? Millions across the globe stilld eem it immoral.
Sorry, but you need to get off your high horse and acknoledge that Qatar has a different ideology which is arguably superior to the mess that is the West.

By asking if the fans should be blamed for watching you’re completely shifting the way in which this needs to be looked at. If you or I personally watched no games, and even if a large number of fans at home did the same, nothing would change.
