If a member of the general public tried to use the argument of ''I didn't know the rules'' to the Police or the tax man they would still be prosecuted under UK law.
The panel accepted that members of Parliament shouldn't be above the law, then they should be charged with fraud.
Regardless of if you paid back the money or not, you still committed fraud!!

What is equally appalling is she tried to say it was because she was a woman that she was being scrutinized. The audacity of her is almost unbelievable, but that is what people expect from politicians nowadays. She should be in prison now and should have all of her assets taken off of her for stealing from us!

    • @johnbull1568

It's not as simple as that. You had choices, like moving closer to work, or finding a job closer to home (and yes, I know that's easier said than done). MP's have no choice if they live in a constituency far from London. I'm not defending the thieving scumbags like Smith, but there are actual genuine expenses that come with living and working in separate cities.
As Joe Millwood says, there are some 'expenses' like food that obviously should be paid for out of one's salary, and it's astounding that they could ever claim for such things. All my point is, is that we should a bit more nuanced with this issue. If we paid MPs the bare minimum, only the wealthy could afford to do the job. The fact that many of these people already are wealthy and still screw expenses, well that's another debate.

She is clearly not suitable for a such a position..We must never give such powers to people of desperately low morality again. Think hard before you vote. She still wont except her own guilt.

It is high time that the British Parliament was moved to a purpose built centre of politics. Where there is a hotel type accommodation with connecting suites for the members staff and office equipment, then there'd be no second home crap, no super high expenses. How much is the land that the present parliament is built on worth????

Jess Phillips claimed £207,000 in expenses last year-£50k went to her husband..clearly scamming the public purse whilst talking about ‘helping the poor’ 🤦🏼‍♂️

The system didn't break down, greedy MP's took advantage of loopholes just like a tax evading accountant. They should chose a modest sized flat that the gov pays for and when they leave parliament it goes back to the Gov for the next MP. Also, what Balls and Cooper did in claiming for both properties is an absolute scandal.

And to be honest, not really surprised your husband was watching those films. I'd choose them over having a go on a lying despicable thief just like he did. What's worse?
