The USFL had one of the greatest running backs ever and they bungled it. Marcus Dupree, they could have built an entire league off of that kid. Dupree tears his ACL retires. Then at the age of 35 decides he wants to play again. Gets back in the gym and a year later makes his first NFL appearance with the Rams at 36 years old. That kid was phenomenal.
Yes, That's what makes it so amazing.
He wouldve been a monster RB on par with Bo or Herschel hadnt he been injured.
The USFL had 5 or 6 players who you couldve built a new league off.
DuPree was only 25 when he tried to make it back to pro ball w/ the Rams. Remember he was only 19 yrs old when he signed his USFL Contract. He tried his come back in 1990.

So he signed a player, he wanted other teams to pay for it. He went into failed businesses, he wanted daddy to pay for it.He builds (to attempts to build) a wall, he wants Mexico to pay for it. Figures.
And it wasn't just some player. It was the 1984 Heisman Trophy Winner Doug Flutie. Fluite had a questionable NFL future due the fact he was short for a QB (IIRC) at 5'9

The USFL would have folded a few years later even if Trump didn't get involved. Most of the owners didn't follow the Dixon plan which was the blueprint for the league in the first place.

Christopher Salsbury The only owner who followed the plan was Tampa Bay owner John Bassett whose entire payroll was what it costs to pay Herchel Walker.
He learned his lessons from owning the WFLs Memphis Southmen, where he ended the Miami Dolphins dynasty by raiding them for Jim Kiich, Larry Czonka and Paul Warfield and offering them all million dollar contracts.

Trump isn’t the sole blame for the demise. They were already spending money before season 1. Herschel was the centerpiece of the whole thing. But they were signing away top flight rookies before Herschel even arrived. Guys like Anthony Carter, Craig James,Trumaine Johnson,Gary Anderson, Bobby Hebert,Kelvin Bryant,Reggie Collier just to name a few and all who certainly would’ve been first round NFL picks later that year. Trump just exemplified the spending even more also Oldenburg in LA was signing all the rookies the NFL wanted to entice Steve Young to eventually sign his deal. So many other examples of ridiculous spending I could run off but I won’t. It made for a first class league on the field. The USFL had their share of problems but the play on the field wasn’t one of them…

He wasn't given anything. What most people fail to talk about is how badly in debt the USFL was before Trump even got there. When the league moved to the fall, they couldn't secure a TV deal because the NFL had a monopoly on the networks. While the USFL did win the antitrust case, the jury had no precedent to go off of, so they awarded them 1 dollar with interest. Pearlman is a solid author, but he didn't talk about how financially strapped the USFL was. Research the Dixon Plan. It was league founder Dennis Dixon's plan to keep the league profitable. Sadly most owners didn't adhere to it.

@Jonh benjamin I get it, but at the end of the day, the USFL killed itself. It blows me away that people can't see this. Do you think the Arena Football League would have survived as long as it did if it came out and said they're gonna bid for the top college talent against the NFL??? Think about this. Because that is exactly why it failed. When you have the league owning a franchise that it has to hold onto to keep it's television contract and the endless other crap this league did, it's not rocket science.
It is a good thing that the Detroit Lions were a good team in the early 80's. Maybe Trump could have gotten this franchise. Our owner was as incompetent as Trump was then.
No they weren't. They made 2 playoff appearances and lost both. From 1980 to 86 they were 41-47-1.
