- MIDORI MD PAPER NOTEBOOK VS NANAMI IN B6 SLIM
On the search for a B6 Slim notebook and here are two choices that I've found. The comparisons vary, but it can be a combination of things that make you buy one over the other. I hope this helps you with some question you might be having :)
Thank you to Carrie Baker! She let me know I missspoke about the pages in the Midori MD Notebook. There are 88 sheets and a total of 176 pages!

I love Nanami notebooks and the small company gives great personal service. When I recently was mistakenly sent the grid B6 slim Cafe Note instead of the lined version I ordered, they immediately sent out the lined one and said to please keep the grid one! Shipping is also fast and reasonable. I'd encourage everyone to buy direct from Nanami. Only problem is their various notebooks are often out of stock so when they are in I grab one even if I'm not needing it yet. The white paper in the Cafe Note is not a bright white, like Rhodia or Clairefontaine, but a really lovely soft, warm white shade. I adore everything about the notebook. Cover is very durable, too, as is the binding. A true bargain at the price! I've used my Nanami Seven Seas Writer with the same cover and binding but more pages for over a year, uncovered, and it's held up wonderfully. Thanks for your honest, refreshing videos. Always enjoy them.
Carla j Good to know! Thanks for adding to the conversation ☺️
Carla j , you're lucky, I've gone on the site a half a dozen times you get the cafe notes grid notebook and its been sold out EVERY time😢. I'm on the verge of giving up.
The A6 cafe note is available today. I love that size too. I 've shared your frustration, believe me.
I like the Midori better. I like the color and I like the grid size better. You can also get that same paper in the A6, A5 and even in the TN. Such a great paper.
John Rush Agreed 😀
I've been researching b6 slim notebooks, and I've been obsessed with these two! Thank you so much for the comparison.
Hi! I love your videos!! I recently purchased a Nanami b6 slim grid for a 3 year journal and then a Midori MD B6 slim (lined) for a regular journal. I use fountain pen in the Nanami and gel pens in the Midori. I love them both and agree that they feel great in the hand. FYI, the Midori actually has 176 pages (Jet pens says 88 sheets which should be doubled to = pages). You can actually see the number 176 in the back of the notebook with all the Japanese. I was super confused by this initially because I was numbering my pages and got to 88 half way through :-)
Carrie Baker 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you! Yes, I knew that, I must of missed this in the editing process. I rewatched and I did say 88 pages 😂 I will make a correction in my next video and in the description 🤗
Wowwww!!! LOVE THAT YOU DID THIS VIDEO BC I’m for sure wanted B6 slim but didn’t want Tomoe River paper... & was literally going between these 2 notebooks... GREAT VIDEO!!!
The MD is actually 176 pages (88 sheets). The Nanami is 384 (as you said).
I’m leaning more toward the cafe note because I like the white paper, the amount of pages, and the smaller grid. I tend to write small anyway. But who am I kidding? I’ll probably get both at some point because I like to try new notebooks all the time!
I just bought the Midori to try and wow, I'm impressed. I love the 5mm grid and that it can fit easily into my purse. I'm using it as a second notebook to scribble on if I have some quick notes to jot down.
I haven't tried a Nanami, but I'm drooling over the Tomoe River Paper. I'm obsessed with that paper. The sad thing? I've never used it either. But the thinness coupled with how well it handles most pens (I've watched too many pen tests, LOL) has me won over. That's the first paper I've ever craved without concern that I might not like it. It has all the qualities (if all the reviews are right) that I'm looking for in paper.
That said, I do love my A5 Midori MD. I used wide Washi tape to cover the cream cover. The grid is a bit larger than I like, but the paper is fabulous: it's smooth, stands up to my fountain pens, just holds up really well. When I first got it, I wasn't impressed, but dang! It is really well made. The quality has far surpassed my expectations. It lies flatter than any other notebook I have. The spine, even though it looks unfinished, is sturdier than any notebook I've ever had. For how flat the pages lie, it seems like they should be popping out from the spine, but they don't. They are in place, solid. They've done a fabulous job on the binding. Phenomenal.
Diane DeMasi I feel like you would love the Nanami since the grid is smaller at 3.7 mm. Thanks for sharing 🤗
I prefer the MD mostly because the grid is larger and I like the ivory paper. Normally I prefer Tomoe River paper. I believe the binding on the MD is to allow for the book to be folded completely in half backwards (once broken in) to allow for the train travel. Thanks for this great comparison. :)
musictoliveby08 Thanks for watching🙂
I really like Midori but I LOVE Nanami notebooks. I like an “all-in-one” notebook; bullet journal, art journal, regular journal. I love the Tomoe River Paper because I prefer fountain pens and I love the number of pages because I like to get an entire year in one book. I LOVE watching it fill up with wonderful memories and art pages that my 20 year old daughter and I do together once a month! I use the A5 Studio Note because I like the larger size, but have been tempted to try the B6 Slim for something else because Nanami notebooks are just so nice. Great quality, great customer service, and fast, reasonable shipping. It took me a few days to get used to the smaller grid size but now it just seems perfect. I would highly recommend. 😊
Lori Bauer That’s so cool you and your daughter do together! Thanks for sharing🙂
I'm a Midori girl, I do watercolor, stamping and stickers. Previously I was using the A5 but now I'm into B6, easier to work with and carry- it is all about the paper for me. I'm over the TRP.
Raven Skye Can you use the dye based ink?
Sylvia From Wright Your Life depending on the brand the dye can soak thru, I use the Distress Oxyde, in the lighter colors, or archival in light gray- I like this one because it is almost a no line imprint. The StazOn in Dove Gray works really nice. The water colors will create that similar crinkly effect as on TRP but it does not seep through.
Ordered two of these using your link! Thank you! The nanami one
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
I also think you should do authortube and combine it with booktune and do more of your writing stuff because I am super fascinated about your writing and your process and the books you like as I am a writer too and I really love learning from writers that I enjoy. Have you looked at Racheal Stephens? She’s a Scottish writer who does these GREAT preptober videos and she has wonderful book writing tutorials on the novel crafting process. I love listening to her voice! Anyway, I think you would be great at a similar channel and I hope you will give that more serious though! Oh and I also LOVE yellow paper house, too! We have so much in common! I really enjoy your videos so very much and I wanted to say thank you for all that you do!
Great comparison! Thank you! I love my MD, I have a mental block with TRP, I feel it’s such precious paper that I have to be perfect when writing on it 😹🤦🏻♀️ I love being messy and brain dumping in the MD.
I love Midori MD simplest because of one thing: the GRID! I know that dot grid is the most desired in the mass probably due to the popularity of Bullet Journal. But to me personally, dot grid is my least favorite ruling. On the contrary, the MD grid is so utilitarian, and it has a nice page margin to help make the page not look so cramped. This unique grid with margin to my experience only existed in Midori MD.
Great and informative video. Thanks Sylvia. Just so you know - you are my go-to-person for stationery reviews! Seem to be on the same wavelength. Thanks again for all your videos - love them!
Thanks, Deb 😃
I’m thinking that I like the MD better. Grid is bigger- I write weird and inconsistently. The Naname- small grid = me trying to cram my writing on every line😬! Also the color of the MD is less stark. I’m using white Clair Fontaine paper and it’s starting to annoy me🙂. Md has less paper so I won’t get bored and I can find it on Amazon. Thank you for sharing you review it was helpful 🤗! Take care and have fun💗🤗!
Excellent review. But I just love the MD notebooks. I think they're elegant. Tomoe River paper makes me kind of crazy because it wrinkles so I end up ironing the durn things. I know: it's crazy but I won't hurt you. ; )
I just put my Midori MD B6slim in the CS old personal size and it fits edge to edge and is fabulous!
I would like to try Nanami too :)
thedylangirl Good to know, thank you ☺️
@thedylangirl Great to know! I have a personal size CS and a personal Speckled Fawns on the way - and this is precisely why I am researching these sizes! Bless you!!! Thank you!
Nanami! Tomoe River Paper ❤😍❤
I have both of those in A5 and I love them!! I'm currently looking to get the Midori first because that's what's available, but I was wondering if the B6 Slim would fit in a standard Midori TN cover. Seems like a great combination. Thanks for the comparison!
This was really helpful-thank you!
I really like the Cafe Notes size and quality and am using one for a 5yr journal next year. Unfortunately I'm trying to find a b6 as my work notebook (the slim is just slightly too slim for my liking here) and it is much harder to find lol.
Very helpful video…thank you!
Nanami love to but u do wish it was cream colored
Hi Sylvia! Does the price you quoted include the difference in shipping cost difference? Ordering from Nanami plus shipping vs. ordering MD from Amazon (since they don't sell B6 Slim Nanami)? Is the Amazon Prime price comparable to the Nanami price + shipping?
Hey I know this is a silly question, but I have been trying to buy the Nanami Cafe Note on their website for days and there is literally no purchase button or anything. I'm so confused. Maybe you can help me? How did you buy yours?
When they go on vacation you can see the price but not buy it. This was the case a few weeks ago. As orders were on hold. Also when it’s out of stock they don’t have a purchase button. It will say below that it’s not available. I would email, if this is the case, and ask when they will be back in stock 🙂
Thank you so much, it has been driving me crazy!!
Kathryn Mcmahon I brought the Cafe last night.
Been looking at the MD B6 slim... can it fit a Traveler’s Company TN?? A little overhang, I don’t mind..
With overhang, yes! It is short, so I think it looks weird for me. People buy A5 size and take them to Office Depot and have them cut it to fit in a standard tn. It’s a few bucks. The height is nice!
Sylvia From Wright Your Life saw it yesterday for myself. Yeah it looked weird. Lol. I settled for a thin B6 slim I found in Muji. It’s same dimensions I guess but because it’s half the thickness it doesn’t look as weird.
Do all of the grid Nanami notebooks come with the gridless box at the top of the page?
No.
@@SylviaWithAPlan Just the grid one?
Ethan Hardy if you go to their website they have pictures.
