Are Ukrainian soldiers going rogue?

  • The war in Ukraine has been going for a while now and the personal cost continues to climb unabated. With these seemingly endless losses, comes the need to retain order and focus on the end goal, removing Russia from their homeland. For that to happen we cannot have Ukrainian soldiers going rogue. Lets take a look.
Without high morale and motivation in difficult times, we run the risk of losing the initiative, especially as its normally your fittest and most motivated who start the war, leaving you with your less motivated to come in later. Soldiers going rogue are disease that spreads through a unit and eventually a whole army. So, you need to be prepared. Laws need to be put into place and things readied to ensure that your army runs smoothly. Recently Ukraine put in some strict laws that has been castigated by many who put Zelensky under huge pressure to veto them. But he has refused to do so, and the law strengthens punishment for wayward military personnel and rejects a petition signed by over 25,000 Ukrainians who argue it’s too harsh. The forget that the country is at war!
“The key to the combat capability of military units and ultimately of Ukraine’s victory, is compliance with military discipline,” Zelenskyy said in his written response to the petition.
In the same way, when that individually captured footage finds its way onto social media, you have the creation of soldier celebrities, and this brings its own trouble. As they try to outdo and to create content. One of the most recent examples of this has to be Sergeant Major Valerii Markus. He has a very popular UA-cam page that has over 519 thousand subscribers and some very popular videos.
For some of the best updates on the current war, I recommend

An army needs strict discipline to function correctly, but this is a new type of war where cameras play a major part .
My opinion is that in general Ukraine does a good job of managing the information space and affectively counters most negative aspects.
Excellent content, great , thought provoking video.
    Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦🇬🇧💪

Again, excellent analysis and cogent insight. Towards the end of WWI French and Russian commands were experiencing similar problems with highly detrimental effects.

I don't get this kind of content elsewhere. On the issue itself, you are right on the money. If people find they have been punished unjustly, there can be a review and rehabilitation process after the war, but not now.

On the point of celebrity soldiers, completely agree. There is a good example from Ukraine´s recent past, Nadia Savchenko. Captured by Russian forces in 2014, when she was exchanged back to Ukraine, she became an MP, and plotted to destroy parliament and take over the government. I have witnessed ex-military personnel being used by various political factions as paid muscle, with the additional clout that their status carries. And I don´t see any reason why active soldiers would be broadcasting from the front. Either work in the information sphere, or focus on killing orcs.
Where I become more reticent is with the increased disciplinary measures. Sadly, cases of staggering incompetence and outright abuse do occur. An acquaintance of mine posted a story from her friend whose son "killed himself". He had served since 2020, was waiting to get leave in a few days, and the base he was posted at has a history of mysterious suicides. If you put yourself in the shoes of a Ukrainian man, if your state can put you in uniform into a system where abuse is hard to challenge, and thrown into a meatgrinder where you will die very soon, is your government really so different from Russia that it is worth throwing your life away for? There is a real risk that excessively harsh measures will end up having the opposite effect and undermining morale.
Quite a lot of corruption cases have been coming out over the past few weeks. Before orcs start gloating, the reason that these cases are coming out and gaining publicity reveals the fundamental freedoms that Ukraine has and Russia lacks. Although it makes Ukrainians sick to their stomach to hear about such cases, in general the publicity and backlash reveal a civil society that still functions under the pressures of war. And I would argue strongly in favour of treating the issue of freedom of expression with great caution

All your points are brilliant thank you. I will say, that its possible to measure things more effectively and to judge situations better. If these rules just become a sledgehammer to beat people with, especially without due consideration, then you are 150% correct, we do run the risk of becoming the monster. So yes, I would expect these rules to be used by effective management and superiors who care. Suicide like that, is wholly unacceptable, I would expect his commanding officer to fall foul of the very same measures for allowing that to happen. In the very same way the American armed forces would see a situation like your acquaintance as being indicative of poor leadership and they would act accordingly.
Love your contribution and I take your points on 100%.
The question of corruption is a big one for Ukraine and I think it will be constant stream of those being punished and held accountable.

Unfortunately dedovschina is still common in Ukrainian militaries, this was inhabited from the Russian Empire and then to the USSR, then to certain post Soviet states

Yeah he did. Unfortunately whilst us arm chair generals can make all sorts of comments, he cannot. He is an active member of the armed forces and needs to approach the chain of command carefully with any issues. He is an incredible warrior and amazing NCO and the men look up to him, so whatever is going on. It cannot become public, that is only going to help the enemy. He will end up with tons of medals I am sure...too brave and effective not to. Slava Ukraini.

Many people say that traditional military intelligence is incompetence Ukraine has shown that we can do better than that. The same is true of military Justice. If anyone should be held to a higher standard it should be leadership if the goal is to win the war. Data Systems are already revolutionising the structure of government in Ukraine. This should be carried over to military Justice. Draconian laws can destroy morale
