  • Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday visited the plain belt of West Garo Hills where an estimated 30,000 families have been affected due to the flood.
Sangma, during his visit to the area, reviewed the relief and rescue measures being undertaken by the district administration in places such as Silkata, Namabila and Haripur villages to the flood-affected families.
The river Jinjiram that flows close to these villages is in a spate. This river has its origin in Goalpara district of Assam, and flows most of its course through Goalpara and South Salmara districts of Assam and then enters West Garo Hills and eventually merging with the Brahmaputra in the south.
In some of these areas, the flood water of the river is almost five to six feet above the normal water level of the water bodies and water has entered into houses and inundated large tracts of agricultural land.
