    I don't know why the internet is such a toxic place. I love your content and I've always felt your honesty and authenticity have shown through. That's why you're the number one tech influencer I watch. I'm a tech lead of a small team at a small company and, for what it's worth, you're the first source I trust for news and trends in our industry. I'm sorry the toxicity of others has so deeply hurt your business. Please don't get jaded and don't change. Like, even if what you're saying would be your true opinion, sponsorship or otherwise, it's not great optics in my opinion. It's not something you should ever point out. That's the sad part about having to take sponsors. You're forced into this quandary. Rightfully people are wary of what people say. I'm not saying I don't trust Theo but when basically every other person is a shill, it's hard to beleive one random guy isn't, even though that guy is clearly putting in a lot of effort into making it clear he's not a shill. There's an incentive when you are benefiting from saying you like something to, well, say it.

    • @ricardoamendoeira3800
      @ricardoamendoeira3800 2 місяці тому +3

      It's not a paradox, as soon as you take money from a company you have a conflict of interest and you'll be less honest about bad changes in the company or good changes in their competitors.
      The solution is to not take sponsorships from the industries you want to comment on or review, take sponsorships from industries that are related to what you do but are not the main focus of your content. For example, if you review phones you can take sponsorships from case manufacturers, not from a phone manufacturer.

    Theo, I've been watching you for a while and one thing I was very appreciative of is your honesty about brands. You never exaggerated a brand, even when you believed in it, to the point that it sounded fake and, whether or not you mentioned a sponsor, you were brutal with tools you didn't like, you were honest regarding tools you did like, and you were also transparent about tools you use and the features you hated.

    I think LTT is doing sponsors and adds the best in youtube. Both in the video editing, placing and timing, but with a clear separation of whats an add what isn't, and on the occasional content that need some disclaimers made, they make it. Personally I think mixing things up is a mistake, it makes the whole video feel like a hidden add, even if you didn't intend it to be. And even if you make an entire sponsored video, I prefer it when its obviously one and all cards are on the tabel. I never questioned your integrity or doubted you in these matters, I'm talking mostly about the vewing experience.

    For what it’s worth, I always took your disclosures in that spirit. This reminds me of that story from a few years ago, about the JC Penny’s CEO who tried just using honest pricing instead of jacking up prices first so you could cut them for a sale later-and how it was a huge expensive failure, because consumers don’t want honesty or even fair prices, they want the fantasy of a good deal. This is the world we have made for ourselves.

Also literally all the flack is coming from people who would never use a hosted platform anyway. Don't worry about the it, unless it comes from respectable people like prime or dax (who differ ideologically but are still intelligent).

    Hey Theo, I love your content and have never thought anything about your sponsorships past that you were trying to do upfront disclosure. I find your takes insightful and your tutorials informative and relevant. I work as a comp sci professor and I often point my students to your channel for their projects. Stay strong and keep working hard, we all love what you do.

    Other creators: Get sponsored - "Look what I found, so cool!" Theo: Gets sponsored - "Look what I found, so cool and they sponsor me." People: Theo is just trying to sell us sponsored stuff, lets watch the others! Being transparent seems to have the opposite effect if no one else is.

    People are terrible. It's very unfortunate that you and Vercel have to deal with static on this. May the people who ruined the transparent and honest sponsorship be chained to a rock and subjected to watching endless generic ads for thousands of years like Prometheus

  • @hamm8934
    @hamm8934 2 місяці тому +2

    I’ll be honest: I’ve been rude to you in the comment sections of many of your videos, motivated by a few reasons, one of which being your sponsorship and support of Vercel’s business practices.
    But I gotta say, I respect the hell out of this and give you props. This definitely puts you in a new light for myself, an anonymous major critic of you. And honestly, your point about how transparent you are versus other content creators is completely fair and I hadn’t considered that too much before. I’m going to be more critical of other tech influencers’ brand deals.
    All of this is to say, I apologize for many of my snide, rude comments about you regarding vercel. Respect for putting your money where your mouth is.
    I still dont mesh well with your temperament, but I respect this move by you and will be more open minded moving forward.

    Hey Theo, I hope you take this well in the coming future. I, among many others, have genuinely appreciated the transparency on each of the videos you put out, along with your honest attempt to be as unbiased as possible even if you're in an exclusivity deal. It sucks that the world can't always have nice things, but I'm sure the path forward wouldn't be too bad either. Thanks for all of the content you put out, being a figure that I look up to and who pushes me to grow as a developer.
    Always yours, more than you'll ever know,

    Thanks for the transparency and willingness to change Theo. This how we all get better. I for one feel more comfortable watching you knowing there is no exclusive relationship, despite the annoying ads. For someone with a platform the size of yours, not being contractually attached to one particular solution is really important to drive credibility.
    I'm looking forward to this new era. Thanks for the great content as always!

    Hey Theo, I’ve been watching your stuff for a good while. I’ve heard you mentioned your sponsor by Vercel, and honestly, every time it was followed by “I use their stuff and I in believe it.” I haven’t doubted that is what you were saying is truthful.
    I think you would be surprised to find most of us feel that way, it’s just we don’t tend to be vocal about it. Remember than the most upset minority then to be the loudest majority.

    I have always found it really valuable to know what you have used in production for multiple years; it's so valuable to hear from someone you trust. It's sad to see you have to make this change, but hopefully, we can still leverage your preferences based on years-long real-life experience using certain technologies.

  • @prodigy1700
    @prodigy1700 2 місяці тому +1

    I'm glad you tried something different to see if it could work, but I think this is a positive change. It seems like you know your own honesty but don't understand the lack of visibility that your viewers have into who you are; we just watch a few videos here and there and see another influencer making highly questionable claims about not being biased. It's got to be tough putting yourself out here and having people not really "get it" that you're truly being ethical, but that's just the nature of being a public figure I think. It's not good enough to simply be honest; you actually have to show that you don't have bad incentives. You can be whoever you want to be, but if your goal is to earn trust from your audience then it works differently when they don't actually know you in person. It's tough, and I think the public is largely to blame for the fact that we have a celebrity culture that fails to reward good people for simply being good, but still it is what it is.

    I truly think this is a step in the right direction. Most people, myself included come to you for advice on how to build and deploy stuff. And taking on exclusive sponsorships in the same space always felt like a conflict of interest to me.
    I mean look at how Linus tech tips do their sponsorships. I think that's a perfect blueprint on how UA-camrs in such spaces should do it

    I know how you FEEL! I know you don't know me nor care of me, and don't care for my two cents but I must say this to you from me. First being, I'm proud AF of you for being transparencies as it's one of the hardest to too do. 2nd is for being humble which I am gong out on a limb saying this but you seem like it. Don't change for anyone ever, always keep true to yourself like you have been. I've only started following you due to you being REAL AF, so don't change that not even for your followers plus if they true followers they are not followers at all but like Russ says they believers. Keep it 💯. Your homie Robert. "Living and being humble is thee hardest way to live life but also the most rewarding and only less than a handful can and will live this way as I am, are you?" 💯
