The leaves are edible, too. When I'm out of lettuce and don't feel like going to the store, I pick several leaves from my Rose of Sharon bushes, wash and dry them, and top sandwiches with them. The taste like lettuce.

When it’s gets windy we have to cut about 50% off to make the plant tough to withstand the wind - how philosophical is this toour own lives as seasons change - we must go through a time of breaking, of cutting so we may withstand what life will throw at us. Be blessed!

Moved into a house 4yrs ago these hibiscus plants were already well established. They are well over 12ft tall. I have cut them back but not down in size. They're beautiful. I've never had to do anything to them. They reach up passed my back deck. So no matter where in the yard or deck you are they're seen from everywhere. It's a beautiful sight. No fertilizer, I don't have to water or use any kind of feed on them. They never fail to bloom. Nothing else grows in my hard, dense, clay soil. But these thrive every year without fail. I believe they've been here for well over 20yrs. As old ones die back the new shoots take over and always bloom thick and colorful.

I hear you loud and clear, I never realized Rose of Sharon were supposed to be so delicate, The ones I've been around just grow bloom without any fuss, Plus you end up with bookoo of Rose Sharon's! Not only do they flower nicely but they're very easy to take care of and inexpensive to have !

I am from Dallas, but did not know that. I hope more people plant them as it is hard to find flowering plants that tolerate both the high heat and the occasional freeze.

These flowers (the white and pink kind) popped up in my backyard last week after my grandmother passed away. The area where they came up were just weeds for years and years and then all of a sudden, beautiful flowers.

How very sweet. I also believe that there is some connection between us and a loved one who dies. Certainly their spirit is always with us. I felt it many times after my father died very unexpectedly (quite some years ago).

You don't have to be religious or spiritual to experience unexplainable events. Your grandmother is letting you know she's OK. Shes also telling you to clean up the weeds. My mother follows me around the grocery store, she occasionally throws a loaf of bread at me, I have witnesses. Enjoy the flowers and think of her when you do. Love from her to you.

Thank you!! My husband didn't know what a Rose of Sharon looked like, and I want one. So now he thinks it looks nice too. And I didn't know you shouldn't use electric hedge clippers, but what you said about the jagged cutting making the plant succeptible to catching diseases die to the branches not having clean cuts makes complete sense! That is like Rose bushes. You should use Sharp Shears and cut at a 45° angle. I think I'll make similar cuts on the Rose of Sharon. It will probably help the rain run off more easily like it does for Mom's Mr. Lincoln Rose Bush. Thank you!

These shrubs attract major pollinators. If you have hummingbirds in your area, as we do in Northern Ohio and in Vermont, hummers love Rose of Sharon blossoms - we see them there the entire blooming season. It goes without saying that bees love it, you can see on landing in this video.

I just bought two for my garden, but I'm worried my climate won't be warm enough for them to bloom well, I'm in Ireland. On some sites, it says they need a good summer to flower well. I think your summers would be a bit warmer/sunnier than mine, but there's not a huge difference. It looks great in your video, but maybe this was a good summer...do you find any problem with flowering?

I have a 10 foot hedge of these which are now almost 40 years old, we cut the tops back after they bloom and trim the sides. It is blooming as I speak, August 11th, what I want to know is, how long can I expect these shrubs to live? They are between 18 to 20 inches in diameter at the base and I have noticed rain water accumulating where the branches meet the trunks, worried for ice forming there. Wondering if I will have to replace the hedge within the next few year.

When I moved in it literally has a trunk which is 3-4 inches around. It is as at Least 15 feet tall. I have been cutting the side branches in the fall, but this guy grows like a weed, albeit a gorgeous one. The problem is the branches get so full of flowers they really dip down.
We end up tying it to support it, but that does take away a bit from its look.

Hello from Houston, Texas. I love my plant but am very frustrated with the disease or bug infestation on my Althea plants. I have two of them. My plants' leaves get this white powdery web looking material on the backside of leaves first and then it moves to the front. It seems like a cocoon because I have seen some kind of insect under the white powder. Then it spreads to my other plants as well. I am not an experienced gardener. Please suggest something. I don't want to take my plants out. Thank you.

Have you tried grafting on scions from the desired flowers source onto the rooted specimen showpiece?

I have 15 Rose of Sharon trees. Iast year they had lots of buds, but only half opened. The others turned brown and died. The biggest tree had black stuff all over its bark. What is wrong?
