- We're back in the garden after a summer break! We're preparing our organic vegetable garden for our best growing season (autumn) but in the mean time here is an update on what's growing, what we're harvesting, what we're planting and what we've been up to in the middle of summer here in Brisbane, South East Queensland Australia.

Love a local channel. Just subscribed. I'm just north of Brissy too and love finding channels with local knowledge. We are just starting out on our garden veggie journey. We have had great success with cucumbers so far but not much else has taken. We have two raised garden beds which will become 4 next week...lol...I made the mistake of getting some of the Mt Stacky towers, but all I can get to take in them so far is Strawberries. I'm not sure if they are a failure or perhaps the summer heat and rain was not ideal for them. I will persevere with them and experiment to find what works best in them.
Summer is hard, definitely try them again when it cools down. Our best season is coming! Just a few more months to withstand, we usually get highest rainfall in the next couple of months.
Great stuff Love of Dirt I'm originally a Brisbane boy ( Mt Gravatt) now living in the Wide Bay on 30 acres. We are 14 years into a permaculture project on our property loved your video. We have also began making over the garden area and syntrophic swales. Lots of growth this summer.
Sounds amazing
I’d love to see what you’ll be sewing in the coming weeks
Weather has cooled a bit so I’ll get out in the next couple of days
We are 6 hours north of Brissy and getting the heat but no rain. Everyone getting it either side of us it seems. But everything growing very well.
It’s so dry up that way, we haven’t had a lot since before Christmas but have been getting the odd afternoon storm.
Chess I’m in Gladstone so probs not too far away from you, has been drying out until last weekend, got 40mm so lucky. I give up vegetables in the summer, but have just planted 7 varieties of Tom seeds
@ I’m inland 15 minutes from Miriam Vale. We haven’t had a gd rain like that since December.
@@chessman483 ahh it’s been soo patchy mate need some widespread good rain awonga ticking down month by month, I got my fingers crossed for you mate
@ Cheers we are all good. We are setting up a large food forest, we find it’s pretty drought resistant. We do also have some fine spray sprinklers covering all our acreage. That comes from our huge dam. But I think within two years we won’t need any irrigation. We went 11 months in our more established food forest this year without irrigation. Until our system is set up completely we don’t grow many annuals, to hard in the blazing sun. Our shade trees are in place now, so next season will grow more.
Very good video. Despite been away you still managed a good harvest. Well done 👏
I was surprised, especially at those cucumbers
I'm in Moreton Bay and I love the local knowledge. Thank you. :)
Thank you 🙏
We are in Dayboro. Looks like my veg beds after coming back from a few weeks in Darwin. Hot, dry, humid weather and the pool looks more inviting still. Thanks for the video. It’s good to see how your garden is working right now. Jicama is pronounced Hicumma.
Thank you! At least we’ve had a few cooler days this week.
Hi from Sydney! It looks more like spidermites on the basils. I lost a bunch of beans to them, alas. Love your video, have subscribed, and looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
I do have lots of spider mites on the beans nearby so I think you might be onto something 🤔 I did pull out some plants that had black mould though just didn’t record it.
Nice to see you back on deck. Happy New Year
Thank you :)
my dwarf mulberry trees also have fruit on it in brissie
It’s strange isn’t it! There is an old wives tale that says if they fruit twice it’s going to be a cold winter 🥶 guess we’ll have to test that theory
So now I know why it hasn't rained lately. You installed a rainwater tank. 🍅
I promise I’ll wash my car tomorrow
@loveofdirt 🌧🌈
We'll blame her for that hey 😅
Im bribie, your garden is doing great. All i seem to grow is pests and diseases at the moment
😂 lots of cool bugs at the moment. I’ve seen a fair few good ones about so I guess I’ll let them do their thing
@loveofdirt same but hasn't stopped me starting more seeds and seedlings 🙈
Hi Nicki, I love your basil pesto roll! Could you share the recipe?
I use Jamie Oliver’s quick batch pesto recipe. If you google it the recipe should come up.
I put out one of our security cameras to watch what was stealing from my garden… but then I couldn’t tell if it was a native rat or a feral rat, so I was too scared to do anything about it. It ate all my heirloom tomatoes, all my baby watermelons, so much food. I haven’t seen evidence of him since we had a resident 6 foot long python for about 6 months, but I also haven’t grown much other than leafy crops on that side of the house since then and he only targeted our fruiting crops.
I hope you solve the problem… you don’t want him seeing your garden as a buffet!
Usually the tail length gives them away, the longer tails are not native. I’ve lost a lot to rats, probably blamed the poor possums for their sins as well.
@ that was my problem, he kept his tail hidden… even the mammal ID pages weren’t confident enough to make a call. The possums here prefer the nice quiet bush over the road thankfully for my neighbours tropical apple tree!
I'm giving peroxide a go to try and control powdery mildew in my garden
I’ve given up until April 😂
I'm copying you and growing roma toms in autumn. When are you sowing seeds? I'm in SEQ too. Cheers
In the next couple of weeks. It’s looking a bit cooler so might have some success with seeds.
@@loveofdirt Cheers
Catepillars have been going insane for me. My poor beetroots and chard are getting hammered. Should be able to get most of the beets, just won't be big. My basil is also going crazy too! How do you make your pesto roll? I need to do that
Yeah they are bad at the moment! Hopefully you get some beets. I do use natures way dipel if it gets too out of hand which is bacteria that only affects caterpillars. I use the Jamie Oliver super quick batch pesto recipe - it uses almonds as well as pine nuts.
@@loveofdirt I have just bought some dipel after being a bit hesitant at first. But it does seem to be pretty selective. Thanks! I will check it out, I like using other nuts... pine nuts are expensive!
I also live in South East Queensland (West of Caboolture). I would like to get some compost. Where do you buy the red soil organic compost?
I get it from Gavin from tomorrow’s general store, he’s based out at samford now.
i have no motivation in this heat. i am just watching weeds and passion fruit
Same it’s hard. So many bugs at the moment.
I'm being overrun by grasshoppers. Very frustrating.
Oh they are annoying! I have found my numbers dropped considerably after getting a bird bath. I need to get one in my front garden.
It's pronounced Hick a ma
Thank you! ☺️
