  • I have received hundreds of emails either asking about or making a statement about this topic. In this video we will do a brief examination of a couple of Bible texts which may help to answer the question, did Jesus use the Divine name?

i don’t know that i agree with this completely. i’m not disputing whether Jesus and the disciples could have in fact used the divine name. i don’t think translators are justified in substituting it in the NT even where the NT quotes the OT. we should translate what’s in the Greek text the way it’s written not substitute things (even the divine name) where we think they _should_ go.

I appreciate your great videos, thanks for your work!
You say when Jesus quoted the OT he WOULD have used gods name.
Later you say it’s a FACT that Jesus used the Lords name.
Am not sure about it, the jews did not use the name centuries before Jesus appeared. Jesus grew up in that tradition. He visited the Synagoge as a child often.
If he would have used the name in public he would have a lot of discussions about that, but those discussion are not mentioned in the bible.
My learning is that JESUS is the name (which means „Jahwe with us“).

Hello, I am trying not to be disrespectful, but why do JW - think they own Jehovah? "Come back to Jehovah," in my opinion is disrespectful. Y'all act like if you are not a JW, Jehovah does not hear you! Really? Any Way... Blessings on Blessings to All!

Yes agree with this. To speak to your father by name is disrespectful but to speak to him using father is a term of endearment.
Although where it’s speaks of sanctifying his name or a making a declaration of his name, I feel it’s more to sanctify or declare his name as of what he stands for or who he proves to be.
If my dad was a very good carpenter and I followed in his footsteps, I would strive to live up to his name . Not his physical name, but who he represents, what he stood for.

Excellent video. If Jesus spoke to his disciples in Hebrew or Aramaic, then yes, he no doubt spoke the Divine name. But God had the NT written in Greek without the divine name. One might wonder why God did not think it important to include the divine name in the Greek New Testament. Could it be because He wanted another name to have preeminence? Secondly, I don't believe Jesus made God's name known by repeating certain sounds....but by demonstrating and revealing His person, character, grace, plan, motivation, love i.e., as he did to Philip who asked Jesus to show us the Father. The Pharisees, according to the Watchtower, knew God's name already. Didn't help them a bit. Knowing a name is not nearly as important as knowing the person behind the name.

My KJ study Bible says God in Genesis 1, but in the study note it says Elohim, because throughout the rest of the Scriptures the deity between God and Jesus is revealed.

So in every other translation Jesus never said the divine name specifically (YHWH); but WT made sure to over use the name to their best translation, Jehovah, and in many cases used it in places where it does not below thus helping to separate people from the salvation of Christ. Got it! Well, WT certainly succeeded in the declaration of that name even though there are many falsehoods in the message. But I like what Mark said in the end, we want to adapt our ministry to win people over to the Christ and this is nothing to be argumentative about. Good video.

What kind of Jew would not already know the name of their own God, when Jesus says he came to make his Fathers name Known, he was talking about his authority, as in, I'm arresting you in the name of the law, what is the laws name? Obviously it just means in the authority of the law, not a literal name

Absolutely Mark. Jesus Himself said at John 5: 43 "FOR I HAVE COME TO YOU IN MY FATHER'S NAME...."(NLT). The Divine Name every knee in heaven and earth and beneath the earth will kneel to is 👉🏽👑JESUS (YESHUA). There is no other NAME in heaven or earth. JESUS (Phil. 2: 8 - 11). 👈🏽😌❤️That right there.

I think it's odd they don't use AD for the dates occurring after Jesus death, instead the use C.E for "Our Common Era." I did a little light research once and AD for the year of our Lord seems very appropriate, C.E is to please the people who don't accept Jesus. I think most people, believers or non believers are familiar with AD and not CE.

Mark Great Job as always. I like subscribe and share all of your videos. However there are a few details that you may have forgotten that allowed you too believe Jesus used the divine name.
Jesus ONLY preached to the Jewish people not the nations. These people were already aware of his name Jehovah or YHWH. The name he is referring to is the reputation of His father. This is one of the many reasons Watchtower had to changed John 17: 3 to know instead of taking in knowledge.
And it is a fact that Jesus did quote from the OT however the gospels were written to a different audience than the Jewish community. That may have been the cause of it been written without his personal name. We can reason on it but just sticking with what we do know as fact no manuscripts of the 5000 plus doesn't carry the personal name.
There is more i can say but I just thought I would share a brief comment.
I love your work and effort. This not a knock against your work.

I’ve said this same thing, nice presentation Mark. Also, i would assume it would be the same for the other writers who were quoting direct OT scriptures. I have a conflicting one tho and that’s Romans 10:13. Was the writer citing an OT verse or should it remain how it is in other translations as Lord?

    • @jwreasoning
      @jwreasoning  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Tyler Chenault,
In Romans 10:13 Paul is quoting from Joel 2:32 which uses the Divine Name. In the Thomas Nelson New King James Bible the word LORD is all caps. In that translation Romans 10:13 reads, (copied and pasted below)
'For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”'
The footnote also shows that Paul was quoting from Joel 2:32.
So the the Divine name (or Tetragrammaton) does in fact belong in this text since it is quoting a Hebrew passage. I hope this helps! Thank you for your kind comment and question. Blessings to you.
      Your brother,
      Mark.

Thanks for some insight Mark. It’s been a wonderful growing process since waking up and I’ve seen many ex-JW channels talk about this verse in specific against the WT, however I’ve done my own personal research and came to the same understanding. All blessings to you and the knowledge you share with us. All glory to our Father and his Son

Great video, in all my time in the JW’s that Jehovah was in the New Testament remained a doubt to me, at the time I believed that the witnesses put the name in the New Testament as to prove that they were the true religion, and I haven’t changed my view , even in their literature they say the name in the first century was know but not used much, if you read the Romans , gospels etc it’s mostly God or Father , yet they always make it an issue that it was used, I don’t think there’s enough evidence , but I may be wrong ! Imagine when Jesus read from the scroll of isiaah of he had said the word “Jehovah “ the Pharisees would of cursed and cursed . They put it in because they believe there the tie religion , same with the torture stake instead of cross …to show there different, one may ask why did I go then? The answer is they had some truths there!
Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water lol
