Desert Secrets and the Road to Cerro Gordo | Destination Adventure

- The rest area that I had found to spend Christmas had kinda turned into home for a few days. The winds in the desert have been absolutely relentless, but I've made due as best I can. Even just from the highways, you can see ruins and remains scattered all through the desert here, but it's just not possible to go and explore them all. There were however a few that I definitely wanted to stop and see. It is becoming obvious just how much of a rookie I am in the desert, but I'll do my best to learn quickly. My first desert adventure was really a lot of fun. I could tell that it was probably an old mine sight all the way from the road, but I didn't expect to find all that I did. The tunnel through the mountain was sure a nice surprise, and a great testament to the hard work of the folks that came before. The higher into the mountains I got, the more I began to find. And not to mention the colours. The colour of the rocks here is just amazing and something totally new for me. After our desert adventure, and Lake Dolores Waterpark, I really had to find my way out of the wind, so I headed north. Regardless of the wind, I was going to be heading north to Death Valley anyways, hoping to secure a tour of Cerro Gordo. I have tried for nearly two weeks to get a hold of the folk at the ghost town, but I think they might be away for the holiday season. It was disappointing for sure, not getting to go up to the ghost town, but Death Valley is a stop I am so happy to have made. It is beautiful here, and full of history. It doesn't really matter where you go out here, there is some sort of history to be discovered, and that is my kind of place. My time at Keeler has been very enjoyable, even though it snowed, but I am ready and excited to continue our travels south.
I hope i didn't bore anyone with my ramble at the end, but it's important to me to thank my Patrons. You guys are the best!

Dustin! What a great video. I'm sorry we didn't catch each other. I'd absolutely love to host you, anytime. I'll try calling you now.
EDIT: We were able to connect!
That’s Going To Be A Great Collaboration!
Thank you everyone for your interest and excitement with this location and collaboration. I’ll definitely be making a trip up to Cerro Gordo in the near future, but winter has to subside a little bit. Excited to say that this one will in fact be coming together.
Dustin & Brent - you are making dreams come true here! Brent from Ghost Town Living is the only person I ever sent physical fan mail to, and Dustin I end every day watching your channel - so I might have to watch the Cerro Gordo episode twice!
I can't wait to see what Brent and you'll come up with, it's going to be epic!!!
That would be SO cool if you guys could do something together! This page is actually how I found out about Cerro Gordo in the first place!
Destination Adventure and Cerro Gordo together in the same content... mind officially blown!
Except not.
@@themoviedealers exactly!!!
@@themoviedealerswhats wrong with him going to cerro Gordo?
Dustin, you'll enjoy Cerro Gordo, but wish you could have seen it in 1976 when my dad and I drove up there in a Chevy Impala station wagon. The caretaker living there at the time hadn't seen anyone for over 2 months, we gave him some jugs of water and some canned pork and beans and he let us have free rein to explore every inch of the town. It was long before the American Hotel had been rebuilt (or burned down obviously), and the town was literally a time capsule, and 4 years before they regraded the road up there (the Yellow Grade)... it was quite a trip and we shredded a tire on he talus slope into town, but to be able to see Cerro Gordo completely unrestored and untouched, and explore the surrounding mines, is something I will never forget. That large smelter outside of Keeler was for ore from Cerro Gordo, but for zinc processing. It was trammed down from the Union mine to the smelter, being built in the early 1900's..
You have a fantastic show and I really enjoy it! Those are coyote melons by the way, they're bitter, but the coyotes don't seem to mind...
Was so hoping you'd go to Cerro Gordo!
Destination Adventure and Ghost Town Living= two of the best channels on UA-cam!
Cerro Gordo isn’t a ghost town anymore. Someone purchased the town and is bringing it back to life
@@truckingwithwill4942 it's the name of the youtube channel
Lake Dolores was one of the first water parks, started in the '70s by a family. With a few hairball homemade water slides into muddy lakes, it drew people from all around it was very popular. The water park in the middle of the desert had a good run. There are a few videos on UA-cam showing what lake Dolores used to look like, and how it started out extremely primitive. Went from Farmers fields to water park, all man-made using the groundwater. Thank you for your videos, much love to you all 💞🗺️💞
I am 66 yrs. old and disabled so I love your videos that helps me with my depression
Haha I tried to get ahold of Brent for over a month, finally he responded the day we arrived. He is extremely busy and has thousands of messages so we totally understand. It was so worth it to finally get to see Cerro Gordo and meet Brent and some of the guys. So I can't wait for you Dustin to explore and do a video at Cerro Gordo. This was our experience if you have time to watch, we (Amy and Brad) love you channel. ua-cam.com/video/KEu4TMifO00/v-deo.html
Wish we would have had more time.
That's awesome
My two favourite channels on youtube doing a crossover!??
HOT DAMN
I grew up near Lake Dolores and knew the family;y that built it originally. What you see now is nothing like what it originally looked like. There is quite a history behind this place that is not widely known, I spent many wonderful weekends there as a young boy. This place was very popular back in the day and even had a motocross track with races on the weekends. As to who Dolores is, She is the mother of the family, Dolores Byers, her and husband John were the original builders of the park. The kids were my age, and we all welt to school together. They were all very nice people and wanted a place for families to have fun together. All the Raging Water and other water parks have this place to thank for being the pioneers of the business. People used to drive hundreds and even thousands of miles to enjoy this place, and was a mecca for a great many high school's annual tradition of Senior ditch day revelries. Originally it was made of all natural lakes with different purposes and even had overnight camping. So much more to this place
thank you for your videos I am 67 and disabled with heart problems so I don't hike as much anymore so thank you for your adventures
9:49 those are called coyote melons.......mostly cal high deserts, but we have them in western/north western az too, in the higher deserts
The look of it and your description suggests it might be a meteorite.
I've beem exploring and camping in the Mojave Desert since the early 1950's. It does take awhile to learn it's physical features, weather, and environment.
Oh heck yeah dude! Destination Adventure and Ghost town living have to get together! Would be such an awesome colab! As always keep the great videos comin!
Glad to see you got thru Cali before the storms hit.
Destination Adventure meets Ghost Town Living..
Woulda been a cool episode, maybe on the way back north.
"Perfect place for a Water Park."
You crack me up!
The mill opened in 1881 and began processing low-grade ore from the Cerro Gordo mines. In 1906 a smelter was built at Keeler to again process low-grade silver ores.
Yep smelter for Cerro Gordo glad someone said it.
Love everything about your channel. Corny jokes, interesting content. You know, Canuck stuff. But be very careful out there where you leave your rv. My buddy came back to his after some exploring and it was completely ransacked. They took his dirt bike and generator. They even took out the battery and starter. He was stranded for 2 days and that's not the first I've heard of this kind of thing down in the desert.
Calico California gold mines great place to visit 👍 👌
I live in SoCal. I go to Vegas for family a lot. There used to be slides and not as bad looking until in 2009 the show Rob & Big showed Rob Dyrdek skating the slides. They removed them shortly after. In 2020 plans started to move forward to rebuild the park. Would be awesome
Tarantula den and Coyote melons. The things a guy learns watching Wonderhussy on Ytube. Happy New Year bud!
Love your explorations Dustin, hope to get out towards Cerro Gordo myself this year, been following Brent the whole time. Ruins are just so cool, stories to be told about them.
Dustin hello from back home. Today's adventure is exactly what drew me to your work in the first place. That almost uncontrollable urge to need to know what is beyond the next ridge and the next and the next no matter the conditions or time of day. Excellent adventure and entertainment every time. Thanks for taking us along.
Wishing you a safe and happy new year.
Travel safe.
lazy river has been swept since Jordan The Lion was there. My first thought was "that's a cool skate/bmx spot". Too bad you cant play Queens Of The Stone Age or KYUSS to go with the desert vibe.
Ahh, I miss my desert. I don't miss California, but I do miss my desert. That wind is normal. Calm days are the abnormal. When the heat comes up, you become thankful for it.
Zombieland is one of my favorite movies of all time! And I thought I would hate it before I walked into my roommate watching it and I learned it was one of the best films ever. Each person wanting the simplest thing in life. A Twinkie.. brush a girls hair across her ear...
What Brent is doing with Cerrro Gordo is going to have a major impact on the Owens Lake Valley area. Keller will serve as a point for tourists to visit Cerro Gordo. Oddly there is more to the Owens Lake Valley and the area around it.
The black rock you hold was Wolframite or Tungsten...it's used for making hard steel...
😉
yup-there was a tungsten mine near pearsonville/ridgecrest cali we hauled out of years ago--take it to pine creek north of bishop where they had a mill--all shut down--china man sends us cheap tungsten now
Its awesome seeing you explore a whole new alien environment. Talk about a polar opposite! Yet yer enthusiasm is as equal. LOVE YOU DUSTIN!
Ohhh I feel so spoilt to see a new vid of yours every week for the last month! It was hard going not seeing regular new vids from you over the previous couple of months lol, so I replayed lots of other ones to get me through the drought, which were all well worth replaying lol. I am from New Zealand and I look forward to every video that you post, you have an amazing way of creating your films that make people feel like they're there and a part of your adventure journeys, your filmography skills are amazing, the songs you play on your videos are incredible and blend so well with your scenes, and you are the icing on the cake! Your warmth, your chillcat vibe, your adventurous spirit, charisma, talent, cool a.f. humour, and genuine personality is contagious. Thank you!
Cool how Brent has such an outreach....one love
The true story of that water parks is just bent but that's another UA-cam. Channel. You end up in the strangest places . love it.
Oh man I’ve never been so excited for a UA-cam collaboration 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻 keep the wheels turning brother!
Your channel is absolute good vibes. Always interesting. Weird fruit! I love that little piece of scrollwork you found and left. The art and the desolation.
Good thing you are traveling though death valley in the winter, summer in way too hot even at night. safe travels my friend
Happy New Year. Enjoy your videos. California has some of the best artistic vandals. LOL
You mean criminals.
Thank you for sharing! Happy New Year 2022🥳🎉🎊🍾🥂🎆🎇
Oh yeah going to see Brent at Cerro Gordo! Oh I can't wait for both of your videos it'll happen! Brent's connections to the outside world is pretty spotty up there. Hopefully you'll connect.
It was a good idea to try I watch your channel just as much as I watch brents I enjoy watching both channels you would have really liked that place it is really neat he's done a lot of work there trying to preserve it I also agree with you about that mural you showed on the wall at that water park when you said it was really good mural it really was a good one it almost looked real well thanks for your good video you never know you might get invited back to Cerro Gordo
I've been enjoying your videos for awhile now. Thank you so much for sharing. Im so stoked, Cerro Gordo is Amazing to me. Keep up the great work. Thanks for bringing me along.
Thank you for stopping by Cerro Gordo Dustin!!
Did you ever think that when you went through that mine shaft to the other side you were entering another dimension and Mother Desert was just sucking you further down the rabbit hole.... You're lucky you had the fortitude to decide to turn back. Who knows what would have happened...😉
HAHAHAHAHA omg, this is todays best comment. When I started reading, I thought it was just going to be another comment about my safety and blabla lol Sure do appreciate the humour in this, and next time yes, I will have in my mind it could be for sure an earth portal :)
I've watched too much Dr Who😁

Thank You for entertaining us through 2021. Like last year ,this year couldn't have been that much easier and I for one appriciate your dedication. Have a great festive season and Happy New Year. Regards, Dafydd
Watch out for rattlers Dustin in those cavern like structures? Hmm they are probably cold and slow🇦🇺
Yooo Cerro Gordo. I totally saw this coming!
Desert gords , they grow all over in the desert , a strange site . Lake daloris / rock a hula was the first water water park started in the late 60’s named after his wife . It’s switched owners a few times . Watch the documentary on it . Quite interesting & it was dangerous as all hell but fun .
Thanks for the watch!
My father I. Law did the electrical work at the water park when it was open
So amazing to hear you're off to Cerro Gordo Dustin!!!! - been watching your channel and Brent's this past year and loving both your adventurous spirits and enjoying seeing the "wide open spaces" that I appreciate so much more as I grow older. Like many comments from other viewers this is soooo cool, Destination Adventure and Cerro Gordo in the same Episode....I wish I could join you.
i remember driving by that waterpark as a kid heading to Cali and back then it looked like it was just closed. sad to see it's all completely gone nowadays.
I was there in the late 70’s!! Crazy fun! Don’t remember all those buildings
So glad Brent answered you. Been watching him from the beginning. I love your hikes an that rock walls with ovens was so nice with the tunnel too. Great video. Thank you. Glad that wind didn't turn into a dust storm.
Hi. I note a it of a landslide. (Wash). Thanks for showing us around. Love to see more of Cerro Gordo. Say Hi to Brent (Hallo). Regards
I love your videos and try not to miss any of them. I would have loved to have done exploring like you when I was younger. Keep up the adventures and safe travels.
Your opening, that is me at any amusement park, but especially disney.
I can not believe that place is still standing.
It looks better than it did 20 years ago.
Dustin you should have hitch hiked up to CG. You could have gotten a ride then tracked down Brent. I agree dragging the motor home up there is pretty forward. Shucks
I am entertained and Wowed at the places you take us. Brother, You got BALLS!
Hope you get to go up to Cerro Gordo.
There is some cactus out there that are jumping cactus, no lie. We experienced it in Nevada, if you get close they jump and only way to get them out is going to the hospital. Thanks again , love the videos.
Yeah, cholla I think, watch the beginning of the mustang movie "UNBRANDED"!
So I really love your videos exploring Canada, but its so cool your exploring in the states around places I'm familiar with
Great adventure and discovery been to wheeler in 2019 lots to see in a very small town super heavy in history 🏆💰⛏️
10:39 you panned over the something you were looking for
That’s a bit of an illusion for sure.
You and Brent together how awesome that would be, follow his channel as well. what a great adventure this was Dustin, Thank You!
It would be cool if you get a chance to go up to Cerro Gordo. He seem to be awesome person. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Years to you and your family.
The sky in this video is amazing. Good job capturing it.
My names Dustin Porter, and I film better documentaries than planet earth.... another epic video. Also, my guess would be iron ore... if they weren't mining it it would account for the weight...
Bingo!
Carry Water canteen. . Your in the desert..
Thank you for sharing
God bless
Congrats Dustin on reaching 100k subscribers! Thanks for taking all of us on adventures.
I cannot get enough of your adventures! I love them all so much. I just started watching your videos a few weeks ago so I have a lot to catch up on. Along with many others in the comments I too would love to see you go to Cerro Gordo! I've been watching him for a while now and I love his stuff. You guys would go well together!
Absolutely love your adventurous spirit! I get the same way when I get out exploring ......"I just want to see what's around the next corner.......".
Yup, that water park reminds me of FPV video’s like from Mr Steele, Ummagawd and Rotor Riot. Gives a whole different perspective than just a rotting old water park.
Fascinating video though.
I'm sure Brent is crazy busy man. Hopefully someday it comes together!
Hell yes!!!!
Just started watching your channel. Lol my family and I use to visit Lake Delores on our way to Disneyland trips in the 70's. Was great in the early days.
Awesome !
I love it !
Beautiful !
...now get back and go set out early , Be Safe ...
Thanx , D ! ❤😊
Did you see the UA-cam channel that has a documentary on this water park? It's all about theme parks. And the documentary is awesome!
Coyote Gourd is the wild plant you found and yep copper is the green deposits, lots in Mojave. Great video!
I've been subscribed to destination adventure for about six years now, and two Ghost Town living for about 3 months now, and when I discovered that this video had both I was thrilled! Looking forward to Future collaborations!
Awesome you went to death valley 😁 ahh maybe it's something you can arrange on the way back 🤠 it would be great to see an adventure in cero Gordo ghost apprently too 👻
Wow some interesting places. Thanks for taking us along. Cheers and Happy New year.
I used to go to lake Dolores all the time when I was a teenager back in the '80s. That was by far the most dangerous water park I'd ever been to. They had a zipline that was hung completely over gravel. If you let go you ended up in the rocks. Fun place though.. as long as you didn't mind the 45-year-old drunken adolescents all over the place.
Yipes! I wouldn't leave my rig unattended!
Quarry .. I think what you may have found is remnants of borax mining, which was prevalent.
My family has a lot of history there, my grandmother told me about the feldspar and borax mining.
I was just at that WaterPark last week. New owners have bought it and want to try to reopen it again.
I liked it. The water park in the desert was cool.
Welcome to my neck of the woods! You should check out the petroglyphs in the Coso range, or the Burro Schmidt tunnel in the El Paso Mountains, heck even Fossil Falls :)
1200 away from the first Play button ! Here’s to a great 2022 ! 🥳🍻
Thanks for all the entertainment. Best of luck in the new year. Almost 100 k subs!!!! 😀
Thanks for sharing!
Driving up the 395 from L.A. is epic and so is Death Valley our old stomping grounds used to do that drive on the weekends to escape the city. Looks so peaceful in the snow. Glad your out and enjoying the desert. Yeah wind is the huge caveat though there’s nothing to stop it once it gets going! Another great one can’t wait to see what’s next.
That was a tarantula hole... most likely. Ah Ha- exploring my desert back yard! Getting your motorhome and trailer(?) up to Cerro Gordo would have been a challenge! Be careful out there.
Amazing the Lake Dolores Waterpark was! Yes can see lots of hazards and you defiantly take life in your own hands going down those slides. Was a great idea and place to go but unfortunately with an employee being injured is what killed it.
If they were processing silver in Keeler the rock probably contains lead which makes it very heavy.
Wow it's awesome you made the trip out to Death Valley Cerro Gordo I've been following Brent from the start of his journey and I hope you do cach up with Brent definitely worth it cheers from Australia 😎👍
We absolutely love Death Valley! Such a unique place! Wonderful video as always, friend. -Ben and Ang 💕
I remember that water park being open and called Rock-a-hoola and there actually being something that by desert standards could be considered a lake. Doing that drive in a mid 60’s vw bus on those windy days was absolutely nerve wracking 😂
It looks like a wild Cucumber !!!!!!!
It was inevitable as I'm almost certain that Cerro Gordo is the center of the universe and all things good are drawn to the center.
I recognize those yellow striped little melons that grew on that dried out vine. Those were Lemon Cucumbers! So-called because of their color and size. They are an heirloom variety of cuke that vines out 25 feet or more. At least they did in my garden, 6 or 7 years ago. And they ARE edible.
