8:13 I mean, WOW. I've never seen Lonely Doug in person but I've heard a lot about him and this shot really puts the magnificent tree into perspective. For years we have been dealing with recovering our forests in BC for reasons like the pine beetle, forest fries, overlogging/clearcutting...but our old growth forests are something to protect and be in awe of and Lonely Doug is a global example of what BC can GROW.
Dustin ….. fortunately (or maybe unfortunately? 😮😂) I have a son that has the world’s corniest humor, much like yours of course, and it is so corny it is infectious!! Only a certified grump can not giggle even a little over these special minds! Love you channel! Keep on enjoying life:). The world needs more of you! 😂😂😂😊😊
what a awesome tree I have seen many a old tree but none this old.I am so enjoying seeing the sights almost feels like being there. I love too travel and have seen a lot of the world but not much of Canada except the Niagara Falls area
Like seriously.. I just want to help you out brother! And Dungies are what Whidbey Boys know best! 😎🤣🦀 You should have plenty of food and NEVER be hungry. Plus, if you catch like than you can eat.. you can share and feed you neighbors;)
A tip from an Island resident....the water and sand of the beaches is salty. Any equipment you run on or in it requires special care or it will rust. Not may rust, will. I'd hose the wheels of your bike down real well and then wipe everything down with a Fluid Film soaked cloth. Everything. Nice to see you exploring and finding stuff from my neck of the woods.
Loved your socks when you went to tie your shoe! and you on whipping it on the beach, you were like a kid in the candy store! Caught myself with a big ole smile! Thank you for sharing and lonely Doug was cool to see!
Hilarious, getting me excited for my trip across BC and whatever comes after that. I was thinking electric bike but that looks easy to whip up as well. Plus you gave me the idea to eat off the land. Loving life. Keep stretching and reaching. Cheers
Would not be talking about the crabbing if there was no crabs left... scientists say if we keep fishing the way are there will be nothing left by 2048. Think about the future for our children... not just your sensory pleasure in the present moment.
You probably dont care at all but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Arjun Forest Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@@Destination_Adventure you always seem to have a huge smile on your face everytime you're ripping by, and I enjoy how random of a contraption it is... I've never seen one before... I dont remember if you've ever mentioned it, but did you build it yourself?
@@hellofoodiebeauties it is a kit that you purchase online. You can put the motor into most bike frames. It is a very cool set up because you can still pedal the bike like normal is you like, or use the motor to propel or assist you.
You should read the book by the same name, if you haven't already: Big Lonely Doug... It's such a mind-f*ck to me that the entire BC coast used to be covered in trees like that one. Being near them has to inspire some sense of awe and reverence...
When you go across the ferry again stop in North Vancouver go to Capilano Canyon cross the dam go down in the valley you can visit some huge hemlock and of course Grandpa Cedar then go to Lynn Canyon enjoy the cable suspension bridge which is free short hike up the valley you can jump off that rocks into Lynn Creek
I really like your videos, great sense of humor and great scenery. Carpenter Fir in Oregon is not labeled as the worlds largest Douglas fir tree but it is 10.15 meters in diameter and 81 meters in height.
I used to work in some pretty remote locations and I was finding golf balls pretty regular. There were no houses or golf courses for miles and miles from where I was at and I'd about come to the conclusion someone was dropping them from airplanes when I saw a telephone line crew ... one fella was up on the pole working ... and his buddy was hitting golf balls out into the surrounding fields.
Wow I can't believe they would clear cut around that tree. I can't imagine it will last long either with no wind protection. Glad we got to see it though.
This area hasn't been logged since 2012 due to one man's flagging of "Lonely Doug" in 2011 (thewalrus.ca/big-lonely-doug/) BC has been largely clear-cut for decades and we are only recently protecting our forests. Yes, this means a major loss in terms of international lumber trade which has huge financial benefits for the industry but it also means we can hopefully protect areas to regrow the forest to provide future *sustainable* logging.
WOW Doug was amazing !!! Glad you found him. But at the end i didn't want to see your crabs!! LOL!! Rock crabs aren't they the ones that they crab and harvest one claw then throw them back because they grow another one back and keep doing it?
It was a program that I seen ( it was from the states) The money was in just the claw for high end rest. so instead they would take the one claw instead of both killing the crab (they only want the claw not the meat) to keep the industry alive so they didn't delete the population. Sad I know, there not killing them for one thing, like killing a bear for it's golbladder and leaving the rest.
Fun video. Would love to see you cook up some seafood. Drumsticks are the cheapest cuts of chicken in my area. Any reason to use thighs? Or do you rock what's on sale? Jelly of that bike.
Just imagine the days before Doug was lonely, he used to be surrounded by trees the same size and bigger, thank god we have Doug left, at least , it’s a real crime against humanity to have cut down all the primeval old growth forests, it really must have been like walking through a whole other world in a forest full of trees like that...
If you ever get the chance, the Red Creek Fir tree is very impressive. You could certainly make it a fair ways in your motorhome before needing to jump on the bike. If you could find a good used Yamaha TW200 or Honda CT90-110 they are great little bikes to throw on the back of the motorhome and would allow you to venture further.
What’s the history behind the Gnarley Davidson? Is it home made, or did you buy it like that? I saw your other video about it being stolen. That truly sucks, and I hope you get it back.
Beg to differ about your comments regarding the Doug Firs but, Lonely Doug is the 2nd largest Douglas Fir in Canada. The largest Douglas Fir in the world (by volume) is The Red Creek Fir located in the San Juan Valley. Not all that far (as a crow flies) from Lonely Doug actually.
Lonely Doug is the biggest fir tree in the world? I thought it was the nearby The Red Creek Fir or, as some sites say, the The Doerner Fir in Coos Bay Oregon. If you make it up to the Squamish area, check out the Elaho Giant. It's the world's 3rd largest and has huge political history behind it. It's a gorgeous area to visit too (Elaho and Glendenning Valleys)
I think you might be right unfortunately (on my part). It seems there are several articles claiming each to be the largest, and I missed the ones on the red creek fir, before filming this. Personally I don’t know because I only got the chance to see the one.
@@Destination_Adventure yep, red creek fir is the largest...and it's not very far away from Doug! The red creek fir has signage at it claiming it is largest in Canada (I'm not sure about the "world" claim). But due to its age and condition, it's not in as good of shape as Doug, and a bit harder to reach for the general public. The red creek fir is broken off at the top but still 4m taller than Doug, and a half meter or so wider. I've been to both several times. Big lonely Doug seems more impressive when you are there since he's out in the middle of a clearcut and easier to see the full tree at once. I was amazed how much bigger it seemed after walking up to the base! From the road it looks like a big tree but standing next to it you really get the feel of just how gigantic!

By the way, where is that huge dougy fir at?
This is BC by the way. Our forests have pretty much been completely destroyed, but we like to pretend we nature loving progressives. Look! We set aside a tiny fraction of the natural wealth that used to cover the entire province...dont mind the rest.

But the reason Doug has been surving is he doesn't have to battle for water, he's the top DOUGLIS FIR!!
