I was at the contest. Frank and Mike were head and shoulders above everyone else. They had a “finished” look about them that no one else had. I could not choose a winner between them until the evening show when Mike stood there with his stomach distended. I told my brother that Mike just lost the contest right there, whether that was the real reason or not it was the only differentiation I saw between the two the whole day.

These were Arnold's sentiments only one year later at the most controversial Mr. Olympia ever. Its probably semantics because Mentzer had an amazing vacuum certainly comparable to Frank Zane. A side- by- side vacuum comparison would be interesting.

Mentzer got a perfect score, the first in Olympia history, was a heavyweight (usually heavyweights - bigger guys, especially today are favored over the smaller guys) and lost? How does someone with the lower score win? I talked to Mike in the 90’s about this, and after the 1980 Olympia he was sickened by the whole process and quit competitive bodybuilding altogether. There’s also alot more that went on, what we talked about, but is beyond the scope of a comment here. He was a really great, brilliant guy. It was really sad when he died, and his brother Ray just a few days later. He definitely left his mark though.

MrChuckwagon55 I just want to start off by saying that Mentzer and Zane have been 2 of my favorite Bodybuilders since the beginning, before the “golden era rush.” With that said, Mentzer’s perfect score in the 1979 Mr. Olympia Heavyweight category is not as impressive as the perfect score he achieved in the 78 Mr. Universe. My reasoning is because the Olympia had such a shallow Heavyweight lineup that year with only 5 competitors in total (Walker, Birdsong, Mentzer, Tinerino and Callender) Everybody in that lineup was off besides Mentzer. He could have been standing next to a cactus and still would have walked away with a perfect score. I think what confuses people the most about this particular competition is the changing in scoring from prejudging to the night show. The night show was scored by only adding 1st place scores... So even though Mentzer went into the night show with the most points(300) and Zane in a close second(299) Mentzer was only given one 1st place vote from judge Malih Alaywan of Lebanon. The rest of the judges besides Bill Pearl awarded Zane with 1st place votes (5 in total) Bill Pearl had awarded Boyer Coe with a 1st place vote which I find very interesting because nobody ever talks about that. As I said in my video, this was extremely close and Zane was at his best, but still very lucky. From everything I’ve read and some pictures I’ve seen Mentzer faded into the night show which is what gave Zane the edge. If you’d like to see the full scorecard check out my instagram page @retromusclemags

@Greg Pettis Arnold more or less retired. He'd been competing for years prior. He had his sights on bigger things. Mentzer quit after the 1981 Olympia citing politics and a rigged system (he wasn't the only one either) and decided to go the personal training route and build his heavy duty brand. He held a lot of resentment toward the bb establishment and had other problems too, smoking and other substances. His 1979 shape was one of the best ever imo.

Mike M-e-n-t-z-e-r was a friend of mine. I met him in early 1979 at Syracuse Bodybuilding (Liverpool, NY) where he gave a seminar on HDT using Nautilus equipment. More recently, in his memory (as his friend the physics professor) I developed a method called X-HDRT (Extra Heavy Duty Resistance Training) to help folks rehabilitate injuries to tendons and ligaments along with building muscle.

Mentzer looked great, but he didn't have the detail Zane had. He definately looked softer in the later pics. In one you even see Mike's belly hanging out, which is the insult Arnold used on him in 1980. Also, the pics don't tell the story of the presentations. Frank was a masterful poser who perfected the art of displaying his physique from all angles. I've never heard of Mike's posing being anything special. Great video.

I was there my Dad took me I was 16 years old. On the plane when we flew to Columbus Mike Mentzer and Ray and Dave Draper were on the plane. Mentzer got up and walked down the aisle of the plane the flight attendant approached Mike and she started coughing lol it was the weirdest thing she knelt down coughing and Mike held his hand out and helped her up. I had a muscle and fitness magazine with me and it was weider on the cover using Robby's body. There was Serge Nubret I handed him the magazine and he surprising he signed it, I have a lot of signatures with the brochure Bill Pearl is one Ed Corney was charging for his autograph. I thought Dave Draper guessed posed also I could be wrong. I did take some pictures of Robby and Zane and Mentzer there. I was along time ago but I do remember that when Robby walked out and turned to the audience there were gasps. I thank my Dad for taking me, he is not here anymore and I miss him very much! Exactly right about comments from those who were not there, so many people just go by the photographs or video footage and say such and such or so and so should have won or shoudn't have won. I knew people who went to the 1980 mr olympia and they said arnold shouldn't have won he was way off compared to some of the other competing bodybuilders and basically the majority of the audience their booed as he was announced the winner. Yet so many people just going by photographs reckon he should have won.
I remember in one of the muscle magazines (musclemag i think) someone mentioned after Dorian Yates won his 3rd olympia that they could not see why everyone was raving about him as he didn't look that much bigger then the other competitors in the photos, and the writer said you have to see Dorian for real to appreciate his size and thickness as the photographs don't show how dominent he really was.

I remember the interview from the TV coverage of the event where Arnold asked Zane, "So how does it feel to win your third straight Mr. Olympia?" Zane answered, "It feels almost as good as when I beat you in '68!" Some say he didn't add in '68, but I don't remember that omission. You don't 'humiliate' Arnold in front of an international audience. It's said that was one of the prime motivations for Arnold's 1980 comeback. It's said that Arnold kept his prep and intentions away from Zane so that Zane wouldn't back out. Jack Neary had good scuttlebutt and speculation leading up to the Sydney affair.

Look at him against Zane and you see Zane is sharper than Mike and has 0 weak points while Mike was perfect against the heavyweights he was not as sharp, striated and couldn’t pose or present as well as Zane. Mike was much better in 1980 and should have been in the top 2 finishers ahead of Arnold and Dickerson.

What did Frank Zane weigh in this contest? Many of the comments made didn't convey anything. the prejudging comment about Mentzer was particularly telling. Weider was a terrible person and I'm sure that the change in judging was directed by him. The growing abuse of drugs by bodybuilders was a direct result of the contest environment promoted and allowed by Weider. His only concern was making more money and controlling the contestants. Look at all the premature deaths of bodybuilders who competed in Weider contests. Disgusting!

I've seen articles stating Zane was 195 at the 1979 Mr. Olympia (10 pounds more than in 78). Most of the competitors in the 79 Olympia are still around today, even Albert Beckles. So drug abuse in bodybuilding was not life threatening until later years (especially the Haney, Dorian, Ronnie eras). Among the contestants at this show, only Mentzer died at a young age (I guess one could argue also Dennis Tinerino who passed at age 64). I'm not sure if Mentzer abused drugs more than the other bodybuilders in the late 1970s, or if his drug abuse that contributed to his untimely death was in later years. The drug abuse problem in bodybuilding in general was really accelerated by body building moving to the mass monster era (starting in 1984). Lee Labrada not winning in 1990 was absolutely criminal.

Danny Padilla wasn't even a forerunner in this contest. He got 5th in the under 200 class. Mentzer's shoulders were better than Zane's. He also got a perfect 300 score in the prejudging. Mike did not complain with this contest

wasnt just about how they looked bro, they had do have charm and get the crowd going also posing was an art back then, thats why Arnold was able to beat Sergio, sergio was relaxing between poses let his stomach hang and so on.
Sergio Oliva s the nr of all times if you only judge body wise.

Zane, Boyer, Mentzer, that was my score card top three. Zane had brought with him the "complete package." Zane couldn't have gotten bigger only because he was a small body frame # 1 and # 2 he would have lost his famous symmetry and proportions. In my opinion Zane should have won a total of 6 Mr. O's not withstanding 1980, 1981 if he not sat out and 1982. 1983 was, again, in my opinion the start of mass when Haney showed up.
