My first car!!! I've had this car as the Mitsubishi RVR. I had the Super Sports Gear trim with AWD and stock 220hp 4G63T engine shared with the Evo III. Man, this was such a blast to drive back then.
I had the Eagle Summit version of this. My friends called it the "Smurf Hearse". I miss the hell out of it sometimes. I loved the driving position and visibility you got from the giant windows. It was unique, great on gas, and a beast in snow (even without AWD).
I’m currently down to 9. Had 14 a year ago. 93 Expo SP, 94 Expo, 95 Eagle Summit, 94 LRV, 93 LRV Sport, 94 Plym Colt AWD, 93 Dodge Colt AWD, 92 Eagle Summit. To part out are 94 Eagle Summit, 93 Eagle Summit and gone to the crusher were 94 Dodge Colt AWD, 94 Plym Colt and 92 LRV. OMG I love these cars. The LRVSport was a dream come true ! It’s black and every available option including keyless entry, sunroof, equalizer radio, ABS brakes, rear spoiler and unique upholstery. B Bill M. Abbotsford British Columbia.
Back in the day Mitsubishi was a strong contender. Mitsubishi was a far more desirable then Hyundai witch came to the US market about the same time . Today Hyundai enjoys great success in the USA while Mitsubishi has faded into obscurity.
Hyundai debuted in the US for the 1986 model year (same as Yugo). Mitsu, under their own name, around 1981 (ish). Friend of mine bought a new Outlander Sport in Dec. Pretty nice, actually. Sales guy said Mitsu was in the midst of a big comeback. I do believe some of that, as Nissan invested a ton of money into Mitsu about a year ago. We shall see.
Mitsubishi seems to have made a corporate level commitment to the South American markets. They have spent less in product development in the interest of sellng cars at a low price in the lower prices market in SA. Their sales in SA take up most of their producton capacity and they seem pleased with this arrangement. The result is their products don't match up well with more refined products in the US market from other manufacturers. This is unfortunate in my opinion. In the eighties I exerienced a couple MItsu products and was very pleased with both of them. Heck, I even bought a Mitsubishi lift truck.
Mitsu sales numbers are an the upswing. Their 2017 sales numbers are the best in over ten years. The Outlander is leading this upswing. Their marketshare however is still small. THe fact that the Outlander is their sales leader simply reflects the fact that that market segment is hot. Most people love soulless people pods. In my neck of the woods you can't flick a booger out the window withoout htting a white Chevy Equinox. I wish Mitsu well and hope to see them come back. They do however have a long way to go.
A precursor to the Kia Rondo and Mazda 5 perhaps...which were also slow-sellers. Mitsubishi did used to be a viable alternative to Honda, Toyota and Nissan back in the 1980s and 90s...now they are an alternative to, um, walking.
I had a 1993 5 speed LRV and loved it. I liked sitting up higher than a sedan, tho I'd forgotten about the automatic seat belt! Mine only had 1 van door (driver side) which was inconvenient. Great on gas and a beast in the snow. I drove it for 13 years, then handed it down to a family member who drove for several more.
I live in a 3rd world country somewhere in Southeast Asia, my 2012 Minivan doesn't even have airbags (base model, dual airbags were available on higher trim) and it costs around 20k US$ when it was offered brand new. guess our government was still focused more on population control more than safety of the people
There were certainly quite a few of these on the road here in Miami back in the day. I remember several of my friends parents driving these when I was in elementary school. It seems like a good idea but only lasted for one life cycle. Mitsubishi seemed twit least try to offer interesting and competitive products back in the early / late 1990s but by the early 2000s had all but given up. These Mitsubishi Expo / Plymouth Colt Vista slash Dodge Colt AWD where decently reliable so long as you didn't overheat the engines and didn't mind the cheap rubber valve rings which inevitably caused the engines to burn oil.
Started collecting these in 2010. Had 14 in all ! Every model and brands. Eagle Summit, Dodge and Plymouth Colts Mitsubishi Expo LRV and Mitsubishi Expo. Parted out and sold a few now. Down to four now. 1994 Plymouth Colt AWD (White) with 479,000 kms, 1994 Mitsubishi Expo (Aborgine), 1993 Mitsubishi Expo SP (Bahama Blue) and my baby, 1993 Mitsubishi LRV Sport (Black). Both sport models are fully loaded including sunroofs, ABS, keyless entry, factory alloy wheels and the equalizer radios with CD jack ! Bill M. Abbotsford BC Canada
A 1992 Expo LRV was my first car. It was a super-practical little vehicle. Way ahead of its time. I want another one. My dream was to put a 4G63T into one (which has been done; in fact, you could get them from the factory in Japan). Some day!
We had the Plymouth version. We always jokingly called it the mini, minivan. The transmission gave out at 150k. It was the car I learned to drive on and I beat the hell out of it.
I love MotorWeek's outrage over the gauge clusters not having voltage or oil pressure info. :-). It's like my current outrage over optical disc drives being taken out by almost every one..don't get me started , DON'T EVEN get me started...
No. This is not a boring crossover. I had one for nine years. It is an automotive hair shirt. It is a car for a person who says to the world "I am useless and tasteless"!! It is cheaply built. Noisy. Crazy fast from 0-25mph. It will hold a rocking chair. It can go 1500 miles in two days, and leave a mark on the passengers that won't go away. It is a workhorse. It was actually so much fun to drive that I paid $800 to have an electric sunroof installed!!
Rob's Randomness I love the Mitsubishi Expo/LRV(Light Recreational Vehicle) but never rode in one. This car deserves some more love and popularity in the U.S., however, a Mitsubishi Expo is a rare, precious gem of a car. It was criminally underrated vehicle, but it deserves lots of love and popularity.☺💖💯
I remember when these were out. I thought it was confusing that the Expo LRV was smaller than the Expo. I remember being interested and intrigued by these cars but the fact that they were marketed as mini- minivans was kind of a turn-off. I think that was a real mistake in marketing. When these models were discontinued, I remember seeing newspaper advertisements from the local Mitsubishi dealer which had them at Rock bottom, fire sale prices.... I didn't need a new car then, and I still kind of regret not grabbing the bargain.
My parents had one of these when I was very young. Just about as good as Subaru awd. The manual was great for regulating speed in the snow. I still scroll through Craigslist and Facebook market place in hopes to find one for my own.
Gosh, remember when Mitsubishi used to make great, if not targeted niche, vehicles? It's sad how far they have fallen in the past quarter century although I am hopeful their latest SUVs are trending toward being more competitive.
I have this exact car. From head to toe. there testing but in an all sky blye color. And i love it so much this is one of my reality dream cars. Your free to come and look at it.
My family had 2 of these. My mom drove a 94 1.8L Plymouth Coltvista SE which my brother wrecked when he got his license. When I got my license we tracked down a 2.4L Eagle Summit Wagon which we paid $1,500 for but it was totally clapped out and drove like absolute crap. It was very comfortable and practical however and I do miss it. First car I ever got air-time in.
landyachtfan79 those are good cars! I bought one of those when I moved to Hawaii and loved that thing. Mine was an 87, bought it used in 2006 for $1200. Really good car.
Mitsubishi Could've been SO MUCH MORE today, if only they'd applied themselves... my friend had 2007 Outlander she LOVED and her mom had a old ass Raider with 400k plus
I had a 1994 Dodge Colt Wagon with the 1.8L/5speed. It was the same "peacock green" than the one in the video. Best car I EVER own !! No doubt ! If I could have another one with a manual transmission, heck! I'll take it for sure !
Tyler Beeson , basically it's about the size of a Focus hatch (or wagon/estate in other countries), but with a higher roof and more upright seating position.
My family owned a closely related vehicle, an Eagle Summit Wagon, in the '90s. It was a silver or gray color. We used it as an extra vehicle or service vehicle within my family. It was very reliable and gave a good ride. Later on, a janitor in the elementary school my mom worked at needed a vehicle. We agreed to sell him our Eagle Summit Wagon. One night we got a call from the Charlotte police. The vehicle had been stolen, used in a crime, and abandoned and recovered by the Charlotte police. Charlotte is an hour away from where my family lived. The wagon was still in my family's name related to the sale. I am not sure what ever happened to the vehicle. I believe it went back to the janitor.
The Expo, LRV, Colt Vista, and Summit Wagon deserved to sell better. They were really nice and useful vehicles. But having sliding doors on the SWB 2-row wagon and hinged doors on the LWB 3-row model probably hampered both versions’ appeal to buyers.
modelmanjohn Fuel tank door at the right on both Expo LRV and Mazda 5. Also 1992 JDM Mitsubishi RVR Right Hand Drive has only left sliding doors and in the Philippines, 1992 RVR from Japan converted to Left Hand Drive.
There’s one of these for sale near me, a gray 4-door. It’s the reason I sought out this video - I had never heard of it before now. Turns out it wasn’t a very big seller. Were I a different person, I’d go for it. $3k, 84k miles… not bad as far as I’m concerned. As much as I adore these old cars, I just can’t justify having one as a daily driver in the modern age, and I’m not in a position to own multiple cars.
Ahead of its time is correct. I haven’t seen any other vehicle (aside from the Eclipse of the same vintage) that offered an auxiliary jack in the stereo. That’s some fairly forward-thinking stuff right there.
Along the lines of credit cards and other things that are still interested in important for me. Lightweight goggles are key to the success of your own home. Alarming rates of interest for the gift of the most reliable flower delivery date of purchase. The only green left is not only the most reliable, but the wait is over and clean. I'm quite high I think
The Rusty Hubcap US rusting? Not so sure about that, like I still have one and it's the piece of shut automatic transmission that is giving up the ghost.
This vehicle seems strikingly similar to a mid-2000s Toyota Matrix...1.8 liter engine, front discs and rear drums, optional 4wd, 4 speed automatic transmission, quick and light handling, and similar size. The sliding door is different, though!
Only sliding doors at the right but not on the left side. Fuel tank door at the right. If you open that rear sliding door and gas jockey or self serve person fuel ip your LRV, so you can’t get in ou out in the vehicle but you might exit through the front door to get out. You can get some Japan spare parts to install extra left sliding door from Japanese Right Hand Drive 1992 Mitsubishi RVR and weld install it. In the Philippines, they also import Mitsubishi RVR same as Expo LRV in the States, but JDM and converted to Left Hand Drive and only left sliding door. If someone or gas jockey fill up their Van, you can get in or out from that vehicle to go on the restroom. Mitsubishi RVR 1992 also has spare tire at the back. They imported a single smuggled 1992 Mitsubishi RVR (Expo LRV), also mentioned as “Used Mitsubishi MMC” along with other smuggled luxury vehicles as Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte urged customs to destroy smuggled vehicles, including RVR, Corvette, Ford Expedition, etc....
The Expo is criminally underrated. It deserves some honorable recognition.
Japanese cars from 1990s are more awesome and better-looking than today's. 😁🌞🇯🇵🎆

"Available drivers side air bag" in the Chrysler vans. Ahhhh the 90's, when safety was optional
Erock. No, when your style of safety was optional. If you didn't get the airbag you got active restraint seat belts.
Probably because they were expensive during those days. Over the years they became cheaper.
Apparently it still is if you want to purchase an 737.
Cutting edge safety feature are still optional today - blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, etc.

Aux jack in 92'? WHAAAAAT??
That was for portable CD players back then, but sure as heck it'd work with iPods or other "jacked" wireless hardware as well...
Yup. The 3000GT, Eclipse, and galant of the era also had the Aux jack. So convenient for modern times.

This car was rolling when there were people from the 19th century that were still alive. 19th century. Back then people still rode on horse and buggy.
This vehicle seems strikingly similar to a mid-2000s Toyota Matrix...1.8 liter engine, front discs and rear drums, optional 4wd, 4 speed automatic transmission, quick and light handling, and similar size. The sliding door is different, though!
Был такой праворульный. Ммс RVR. На механике, 4 вд.... Чудесный авто
Itching for an lrEvO build.
Automatic transmission in hyundai and mitsubishi of the 90s loved to loose 4th gear. That could be one reason you don't see them on the street now.
MW MISSES:

Call me crazy, but I'm reminded of the Honda Electric vehicle of the late-90s/early-2000s, the EV Plus, if I'm not mistaken. Anyone else?
what years did Motorweek do the "Hits" and "Misses"? I know they started with that during the 1986 model year.
where i live this is known as a RVR, they even come with a turbo engine
