Secure it with a paddle lock like the military does!
Roger
Rather than running a key like that get a kill switch like you’d find on a race car. Or wire up a 50-75 amp fuse to it in place of the key switch and when you shut it down after driving you can either pull the fuse out or pop that switch to off and then the batteries won’t have a phantom draw on it.
For sure. I've since replaced it. It was bought that way.
There should be a battery cutoff switch
Nope
There is not
When the fuck did a HMMWV have keys?? Finding keys to there locks was bad enough I couldn’t imagine them actually having keys. That would be massive headache with lots of yelling involved
Haha someone added it. It’s just a lawnmower cylinder.
We use a seperate battery kill switch because the uhf and vhf radios sometimes like to turn on by themselves. 😂
Great idea
That's mother truckin ghosts bro! 🤣
Ahh the life!
Haha indeed.
If you install the battery cover upside down it touches the bottom the seat and archs. Saw two seats catch on fire on the Army because of that 😂
oops
All you got to do is unhook the 2 12volt battery’s and charge them separate before hooking them back together for 24volts.
For sure. I didn’t have a charger handy.
Get a killswitch installed bud
Good idea
Humvee life
Thats right
Put a toggle under the dash.... 😮
Great idea
How much do one of those run at proce wise these days? How much mileage/emgine hours do they have typically?
This one had 20,000 miles and fully rebuilt for $15k
The one’s I’ve seenat auction typically reads around 3k to 8k miles on them. As far as hour meter haven’t seen one. 6.2 Diesel motor young recruits operating them so happy hunting
I'll tell you the real story. You will never ever know the true milage of a Hunvee regardless of what anyone claims, and to be honest....it doesn't matter. What matters is the condition of everything. How's the steering linkage? How's the driveline linkage? How does it start up? How does it run? After it's been running and up to temperature, when you take off the oil filler cap, how much does it smoke? It can smoke and be totally fine, but just not excessive smoke.
Only the real old ones will have the 6.2 and they will also have a 3 speed unless it's been upgraded by a private owner. The 6.5's are extremely good, but don't have a ton of power compared to trucks in the 2000's and beyond. To be fair though, they have plenty of power.....not like you want to drive a Humvee fast anyways. Also, even though the bodies are heat treated aluminum, the whole vehicle weighs more than a full size extra cab 4x4. So that's part of why they are slow. Also they have portal hubs which are a 1.9:1 reduction. So that means you go half as fast but get double the torque. Those hubs are also responsible for an extra 4" of ground clearance. Mine is 9,650 pounds and I have 19" of clearance and that's with factory rims and tires.
What do you think of the 700R4 transmission swap?
Good to know lol 🫡
haha just in case
How reliable is it to daily drive an old military humvee?
Zero haha
It depends......if you get 1 straight from the auction, it's not reliable. Once you go through them and get everything all good, they are amazing vehicles. I've had mine for close to 2.5 years. Been driving it almost daily for over 1.5 years. 1 year ago I sold my other car and have only had the Humvee. The thing is either you need a lot of money or know mechanics. Personally I can take care of pretty much everything myself, so it's no biggie. Although my plan from the beginning was to sell my other car and to get an older Prius. Nothing to do with reliability, but just balancing out fuel costs. I have the 6.5 turbo diesel and I get about 8.5MPG
This one has been really reliable although the dude i bought it from had everything gone through and rebuilt.
Still bad ass to DD a humV.
It’s been fun.
Nobody's had a vehicle with an ignition that you can pull the key in any position
I know right…. What a joke.
My jeep tj you could. Don't know if it was like that from the factory
I had an old truck like that. Was good for parking it while running in the winter. You could pull the key and lock the doors.
How did you start a 24v system with a 12v booster? I run into this problem enough to be considering a 24v booster
I like to live life on the edge.
Just hook both leads up to 1 battery.
Yep, just charge up 1 battery at a time
@@humveeadventures thanks you
@@Satoshi8852 thank you
Is that a diesel?
She’s a diesel
why wouldn’t you just wire it between the military switch and harness
Bought it that way but good call.
People don't realize what they are doing. Many differnt things will burn out what's called the Smart Box. Replacing the factory switch with these keyed switched is a sure fire way to fry it. They cost like $600+ for a new Smart Box. There are ways around it if you know what you're doing like I do 😉
Yeah the truck came like that. They might as well have just put in a toggle switch.
No there's a battery shut off switch and that's your fault for not using the actual switch and that's its function. Alaskans use a battery shut-off switch or something similar on regular vehicles to make sure they don't have that problem! 😂🤦
🤔
There's no factory battery cut off switch lol
What is the switch to turn on the ignition then??? Looks exactly like a old battery switch for boats or tractors 🧐🤔
@@humveeadventuresthat ignition switch is an old battery switch! I've seen em on old boats and tractors! Regardless it's WAYYY to easy to install a battery switch to fix ur problem!😂
Yep agreed. I had just bought it. Its since been fixed.
Of course any military vehicle is a terrible daily driver for many reasons 😅
Idk about that I would daily drive the f out of a duece and a half
@@db11750 If it has power steering and better tires than a NDTs, yes I agree
I daily drive mine and as of the last year, the only vehicle I own. Mine is a joy to drive everywhere, but I altered some things to make it that way
@@humveeadventures Same
Do you tow with it?
Hummers are gas pigs and you look different with a short beard
Hummers are gas pigs
Those jump packs are too good
I know its blows me away every time
Especially those NOCO jump boxes. The pack a punch.
