- By exploiting a number of Paper Mario glitches, it is possible to play sections of Chapter 8 as Princess Peach, nicknamed "Peach%."
Tricks discovered by the speedrunning community made it possible to play chapters out of order, making this glitch a possibility. Bonecrusher1022, r0bd0g, and I have tested numerous side effects over the years, and this video explains our discoveries.
It seems as though everything possible has been tested, but we hope to one day find a method of winning a battle or saving as Peach. When returning to the overworld from an encounter or reloading a save, we magically transform into Mario. Pulling this off would skip lengthy sections of the game, potentially saving time in speedruns.

You should try hacking back an animation for Peach for the game to load, and see what happens when you eliminate the problem of missing animations.
As sensible as the idea is, this channel has thus far been pretty much about glitches and 'exploits' rather than interfering with the coding directly. At most, emulators were used to speed up things or do things in frame-perfect ways that are theoretically possible without hacking or cheat engines. I'm curious to see how far they can push things before something like that becomes the only other alternative... Frankly, I'm genuinely impressed by how much has been found here as is.

Setting up the glitch requires us to beat Chapter 6, so that's why it's not more :/
In a speed run just saving 1 second is considered good, a few minutes is godlike. Just by saving a few minutes you could potentially break a world record

I remember hearing that the Star Rod does not make Bowser invincible, it raises his defense by 15. I'm not sure if it's true, though.

Late reply, but kind of. In the first fight where he’s in front of the window, I believe it raises defense by 4-5. You can still deal damage while the star rods power is active since you have ultra boots/hammer and badges. The fight on the floating platform however…it’s infinite defense. You’ll never be able to pierce it without peach beam which makes sense. Kammy Koopa’s magic greatly enhanced bowsers strength

Does peach inherit badge effects, like she does HP? If so, you could pass along Pretty Lucky/Lucky Day/Defense Up badges to her to keep her hurt animation from playing.

if badges carry over, getting enough defense to ignore the damage could potentially work
Def Up costs like what... 6 BP in PM64? You would only have enough BP (if maxed) to equip 5 and assuming that badges do carry over to Peach, it can't fully block damage from Magikoopa and Bombshell Bills since they do 6 DMG, so a nonexistant animation will still play, crashing the game.

Not exactly "anywhere," as Peach cannot jump, but you could get to Star Haven, Toad Town, Chapter 1, Mt. Rugged, Chapter 3, Chapter 5, and Chapter 6 which would be super cool. I agree, a glitch to bypass those cannons needs to happen, but they're in the worst spot, and we have hardly anything to work with.

Why is this that surprising? It is just a thing that a relatively small group of people do for fun. The game is not even that old, is fairly long, and has a lot of weird quirks.
any game with a significant following will have a ton of glitches discovered over time (unless said game loses most of said following or said game is extremely well programmed). all it takes is time and people who want to find glitches.

In your Paper Mario in 1 Minute video, you said that the Virtual Console version of the game avoids some game crashes because of the way the emulator handles loading certain files. Perhaps Peach% is less crash-prone in VC?

This is probably a dumb question. But if Peach takes on the Health Mario has, would she also be able to take on the passive badge effects Mario has? In which if you grinded enough to the point where if you were Mario and had the Bump Attack badge on you could run into the canons to kill them, would the same work while using Peach? I know nothing about game glitching as whatnot so I have no idea.

The Anti Guy & his animation frames are straight from the game, but this was made by TheSneakySpy. If I'm not mistaken, he pieced together a bunch of different frames to make him dance lol

It's kinda interesting that the developers didn't bother implementing a "If requested frame doesn't exist, load error texture or maintain current frame" fallback in missing frame contingencies. The absence of a graceful way of handling animation failures must have made the debug process harder than it had to be.

How would it go if you tried to skip Bowser's Castle? Don't you need Star Beam to progress? Wouldn't that mean a backtrack to get it or would the airship not be there?
I believe once the game thinks you're in chapter 8, you automatically get it.
yeah you'd have to either backtrack for it or play up until getting it and perform the glitch. (most likely the latter)
It sounded like your usual (very good) straight and never-changing voice almost broke into laughter at the mention of the Koopatrol being too short to talk to Twink. I can't even blame you if so, that's just hilarious. Did you by any chance have to do multiple takes on that line?
I have got to see Princess Peach make it to Toad Town. If Peach's HP is that of Mario's, would certain badges be inherited to her? What if Mario was equipped with badges to make attacks miss more often. What if during the battle with the cannons, their attacks missed every time? There has got to be a way to bypass the cannons. Has to be. I'd love to see Peach exploring the kingdom and finding a potential NPC who explains that they miss Peach. I don't know why, I'm just so fascinated with this potential.

Wait, so in the footage ( 6:29 ), Peach uses the parasol on a Hammer bro, and becomes a Koopatrol. However, in the non-glitched game, there are Hammer Bros that you can use the parasol on, and Peach will become a Hammer Bro, instead of a Koopatrol. Why is this? Are the Peach segment and "Enemy" Hammer bros considered 2 different things by the game?
i know i am later but yes hammer bros you can copy ingame are considered npcs and hammer bros enemies are well enemies they also are considered 2 different entitys (sorry for bad english)

Astral Warrior 7156 Peach does not have that as an option. All she can do is wish for Twink to get stronger. As such, you would need to defeat every enemy via praying all without taking damage in a Peach%.

So mine and other like comments from the last Peach % video helped get this video up? Specifically when I asked "Is it possible to escape Bowser's Castle as Peach?". This video certainly helped answer that question: No.
Namely some of the problems being Peach lacking certain animations (damage, push, etc) as well as the inability to jump. Someone start hacking those in! I'd help, but my spriting skills are... sub-par to say the least, at least when it comes to the 64.

Actually the issue is that it can't, Peach has no way of using Save Blocks, so they can't legitimately skip for Ch6 to Ch8 via this unless they find a new trick to it

it is not hitting the save block that skips to chapter 8 its going into bowsers castle hitting a save block would just turn you back into mario.

Problem: Winning a Battle spits you out as Mario rather then Peach, the only way past would be to somehow dodge the fight entirely
Why is your intro so sad to me? Whenever i see it i can just imagine a guy that lives on a stage in a glitchy world and the only way to entertain himself is to dance to the endless songs but after a while he forgot he was alone.

I believe the first two bowser hits, Stomp and Claw, worked is because those attacks didn't require the player character to have animations, all they did for stomp was edit the y axis scale of the player. For claw, they just rotated the character around the y-axis and edited the colors values of the player object.

what if mario is in peril and has many lucky badges so that each attack from those golden cannons is going to miss?
If that is possible,Peach can wish upon twink like 5 times so that he can get stronger and defeat those golden cannons.

Unfortunately, the badges effects don't work with Peach.

I know I am late for commenting this but it makes me wonder, if Peach's hp is tied to Mario's, does this mean that badges do too? Well if the cannons are the problem I kinda have a plan, if badges (in theory) work on Peach we could do some stuff about it we could make Peach's defense high to the point where She would not take damage(probably impossible since there aren't that many badges that increase defense, but the ones I remember are D-up P-down, last stand, and another one that I forgot the name) so what if we tried The Lucky badges?(The badges that make an enemy sometimes miss) well there is close call, Pretty Lucky and Lucky day, but I remember Mario does a small animation when the enemy misses which would probably crash with peach(in theory), but what if we tried the damage badges? I don't remember if those apply to partners(like Twink) but we could use the Danger and Peril increasing badges since Peach's and Mario's hp are tied we could do a little more damage, the point is we need to make peach avoid changing animations somehow, I know this is video is old, but do y'all have any plans folks? I kinda feel like trying those out someday.

have you tried to hack your position past the bullet bill encounter just to see how close to the main hub would've been possible without this obstacle?
Stryder generally seems to avoid hacking for whatever reason.
Yep, hacking is not exactly playing the same game anymore. You could do literally anything with hacking, so for the purpose of these videos and speedruns, we (the Paper Mario community) are interested in discovering things that anyone can replicate on a console with the base game.
