Timeka! You have never lied! I follow and watch your videos and did everything you shared and what do you know... I got into HR with Washington State Department of Enterprise Services as a Talent Acquisition Consultant and I'm learning EVERYTHING - especially being paired up with my Business Partner! So glad I listened and watched your videos as I retired from my technology career and went for what I really wanted to do and that is hiring qualified candidates who have done their time to earn the job they deserve! So keep pumping out the videos!

Tamika Thank you! I have an opportunity to move into an HR Generalist position for a large company. I was so excited about the opportunity and now I’ve got an interview today. My history is in recruiting I worked for a large staffing firm for 5 years, internally and as an outside sales rep. I later took a position as an HR Assistant. I loved this position, it was demanding and constantly evolving. I started out handling work comp claims, FMLA, staff travel Arrangements, filing, EOV’s and as I gained experience I took on preliminary employee complaints and directed as needed. I really thought I would continue my career in HR. Life changed, I got married had 2 kids and wanted to be home more with them and avoid day care costs and have this precious time with them. When my kids reached school age I started volunteering at the school and career shifted into working for the school district. Long story short that field is always about who you know. So HR positions were never available. I’ve spent the last 16 years in the school district, my HR experience at this point feels relic.
All of this to say I came across your video to try and get an idea of what I’m getting myself into. I believe in integrated and honesty and I do not want to sell my self into a position that is outside of my experience. I have wonderful friends that are cheering me on with the you can do this, you can learn as you go. Nope, after watching your UA-cam video I am confident this position is above the level of experience I have. You’re incredible, thank you for your detailed video explaining the day in the life of an HR Generalist. My children are 16 and 17 now and I’m ready to return to the HR field. I’m going to continue my search as an HR Assistant, get my head in the game and move up from there.
You made a huge difference in my life today. Thank you again. 😘

Awesome!!!! I created this video to give clarity & I’m screening happy you got it! Many times folks will take HR Director HR Manager jobs titles, when they’re actually functioning as an HR Generalist. This sets them up for failure on their next job.
Since you’ve already been an HR Asst & you want to return to HR, then maybe being an HR Coordinator or HR Specialist could be your next step.
Here’s the link to a video I did about it:

This video is incredibly helpful. I’m pivoting into HR/Recruiting from a 12 year career as a Police Dispatcher with sales experience. There are so many parallels between Emergency services and HR. I’m finding the transition very smooth yet challenging in a rewarding way, as I’m researching to find a good fit as I enter a new chapter.

I empathize with your losses; it’s never easy. I can sense your strength. I have an interview tomorrow and wanted to share my journey. I began as a recruitment consultant, then moved to assistant manager in payroll and employee relations, and now I’m an HR manager with over eight years of experience. I’ve found the North American (especially Canadian) market to be the toughest to navigate. It took many interviews to finally land a role in HR. While the core principles of HR remain the same, the compliance aspects vary significantly across countries. I’ve noticed a stark contrast between the perspectives in Asia and North America-what we celebrate may be seen as standard there because it’s part of the job. I believe both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards are crucial for employee engagement and retention. However, I feel that the North American market may not fully appreciate this yet. I’ve also had to adjust my language in interviews, avoiding words like “convince,” “persuade,” and “reduction” to steer clear of negative connotations.
As noticed that you’ve to sound like a bot to stay as neutral in language as possible. It’s taken away the human element because every word is picked and sensed differently.

Yes, right on point! People who jump right into an HR Manager role without experience are not prepared! Ty for clearly going over the day in the life of an HR Generalist. I have a background in recruiting with little Generalist experience and a Master's in HRM. Seems difficult to land another Generalist role (currently unemployed). I've only been doing contract positions.last couple of years and it's been tough. Maybe it's because I'm a dude and I'm the odd one out idk. Your video goes quite in depth and is very much helpful. Thank you!

Ive been able to get into HR because of recruitment so I totally agree! And Im learning so much about HR and think ive decided I wanna focus on the employer branding aspect, HR is just so broad. I need to be less hard on myself I try and respond to everyone within the same day but its almost impossible will also stary the 48hr thing. Awesome video! I’m nervous about transitioning into my new role though I’ve been in HR for a few years now.
I just accepted a pilot position as an HR Generalist for a major company. This position is completely different than my last few positions.
As an HR specialist in a factory, I was responsible for all terms, corrective actions, investigations, orientations, onboarding, and training documents. As for my second HR position, I was responsible for compliance related items, retention records, onboarding, orientations, and hiring.
For my new position, I’m a traveling HR generalist that will be working alongside the Regional Operations Team. I’m a bit nervous as my responsibilities are different and I need to be more confident in this role since I am working with higher members of management. 😩
How can I build the necessary professional relationships with my Market and Regional Management team in order to get the necessary feedback I need to do my job? I’m nervous as this position is more focused on building relationships and establishing trust with my peers.
    Thanks!!

Hi Timeka I’m an administrative assistant but I do a lot of HR related responsibilities like recruitment, benefits, staffing, onboarding, termination, leaves, overtime as well as my admin related roles for almost a year. I sent an email for a change of designation (for a HR generalist) since I personally think I do so much more than my role says. Do you think this was a good move ? Also I work in retail And sadly I did on the job training (I basically trained my own self because I had to learn every single thing on my own!)

Yes, if you want to work in HR full time, then I think it’s a good move. Some times has gone by, what’s the update? Did they change you’d job title?

Not necessarily since most companies do not have a TA department but internal recruiters typically get a regular salary with no commission.

I’m not sure. To my knowledge HR Generalist isn’t a common job title in India, but I will ask my current VP of HR bc part of our team is in India, then I’ll let you know.
I do know that our HR team in India spends a lot of time with hiring documents since the employment laws are so different in India.

Into and HR Coordinator and HR Assistant, yes. For an HR Generalist, that depends on the size of the org, the size of the HR dept and the industry. I wouldn't suggest it.
