Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI - Chapel/Mosquito Beach Loop Hike

  • Michigan's best hike! To hike the Chapel/Mosquito Loop at Pictured Rocks, begin at the Chapel trailhead, hike to Chapel Beach, around Grand Portal Point and over to Mosquito Beach and back to Chapel trailhead. Depending on the route you take, you can also see both Chapel Falls and Mosquito Falls. This will end up being somewhere around 12-15 miles depending on your route. It's very easy terrain with minimal ups and downs, and some of the best views anywhere in the state. Getting an overnight permit is next to impossible during the busy season unless you have advance reservations, but there's several options for camping in nearby state forest campgrounds. All are first come, first served.
    I have a detailed trip report, including many pictures, GPX file of the Chapel Loop Hike here: seekinglost.com...

    Nicely done, thank you. We were there first week in October; color as at its peak. Chapel Falls and the beach at Chapel Rock are stunning.

    Beautiful area nice video! Did you ever see anyone fishing in the streams?

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 років тому

      Nope. I fished the streams along the 40 mile pictured rocks trail when I hiked it in 2011 but didn't catch anything

    Is there a shorter hike that would include some of the nicer views? we are heading there next month on our 30th anniversary and am looking for 2 hour trails and such, too old for those longer hikes :) thanks for any tips

      Sure, you could park at the Chapel trailhead, like we did here, and do a 7ish mile loop to Chapel Beach and back. I hiked the west side of Chapel Lake/creek, down to the beach as seen in the video, but there is a trail on the east side that takes you back to the Chapel Trailhead to make a loop. You could also hike loop to Mosquito Beach from Chapel Trailhead, maybe 1 mile shorter, but I would say Chapel Beach is nicer. Happy 30th and enjoy your hike!

      @Travelwithus2there you can do a full loop from the parking area out to chapel beach, then west to mosquito beach and from there, take the trail back into the parking area. If memory serves it's about 10 miles all together

    Do we need a permit to enter the park? Thinking about going to visit the UP soon.

    That noise with you camera is very annoying! All in all great pictures, that’s a beautiful area!

      I hear ya, it is pretty loud, I think the gain was up too high for all that wind and water noise. My newer videos have much improved audio.

    Were you able to finish this loop as a day hike?

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  6 років тому +1

      Rachel Lamming yes this was done as a Day hike. There is very little elevation gain and the trail is very easy, this is a beginner friendly hike

      Right on. My husband and i will be in the area the 2nd week of June. I'll be 18 weeks pregnant. Sure would love to do this loop but hesitant. Was into hiking alot here in the cariboo/rocky mountains of british columbia before we got pregnant.
