Piano Concerto number 2 breaks my heart and mends it at the same time.
My exact feeling about the piece!
@@MelodiousHeart1 Makes sense, since it was Rach's triumphant return from the depths of depression after the commercial failure of the 1st Symphony.
I was torn between Rachmaninoff & Chopin. I preferred Rach's concertos & preferred Chop's waltzes, etudes, polonaises. I played much of both. There were 2 Rach etudes I played that I loved. Now I'm 72 & can't remember what they were but Valentina Listisia plays them excellently on UA-cam. Thank god for that.
not a hard decision with only 2 concertos from chopin hahaha
Imagine being in the audience hearing some of these pieces for the first time ever... what lucky people
I got to perform in Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini for my second ever performed orchestra piece last Friday 😌
3rd movement of #rach3 deserves a place as well
My Spotify is just 2nd and 3rd concertos on repeat. Unhealthy obsession
Rachmaninov, one of my favourite composer!
He is also one of my favorite composers. Thanks for watching!
If I die without having played for an audience and shared the beauty of these forgotten legends, I will die having accomplished nothing. It surprises me how many people dont know who Chopin or Rachmaninoff or Beethoven are yet these people are what modern music makers are basing their music off of. The world without these extraordinary people would be nothing. I will honour them as long as I live and one day hope go share their music with the world!
Thank you for the exceptional comment! I absolutely agree that the world without the extraordinary musicians would be nothing, at least to us music lovers.
How true.
Thank you dear Kim for sharing these magnificent Rachmaninov performances. He is one of my favourite composers, especially for the 2nd and 3rd piano concertos. I play the Prelude in C# minor myself. A wonderful array of pianists also, but Yuja electrifies me like no-one else ! Have a Happy Halloween and a very nice weekend ! Warm greetings, Paul
Oh, I am happy to know that you also love the Music of Rachmaninov, dear Paul! I am also happy that you appreciate Yuja Wang's performance style, she is one of my top favorite pianists. Thank you very much for your steady support! Wishing you a beautiful weekend, my exceptionally-talented friend!
Most people go through their entire lives, never hearing real music..what a shame🥺
This is true. My husband a rock blues drummer of 41years in Chicago has walked away from drums and took up cello. Always had listened to classic music. Now has the desire to perform classic cello. Made a good living playing rock and still loves it, but also smiles and said there is so much more yet. ☺
Very enjoyable - thank-you for posting. With regards to some of the comments saying that Rach is the greatest of all time, I can confidently say that, when I listen to his music, he is the greatest. But, when I listen to Beethoven, then he is the greatest. Same with Chopin, and many others. This is the great thing about classical music - so many great masters to chose from and enjoy!
I absolutely agree with you, and you listed 3 of my top favorite composers!
Rachismanenoff! No other composer or music moves me more...achingly beautiful! I would not dare to compare him to any other!
Of course you needed to put all 3 movements of rach 3. Actual gold.
you mean rach 2?
Melodious Heart's selections are always in impeccable taste. You have certainly captured many of my personal favorites.
Oh, thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I'm glad that I included many of your favorites in this video.
Kim, this is your best post yet, and despite what anyone else might say, I think Rachmaninoff is the greatest composer of all time. As I'm sure you know, you could have easily doubled the length of this video, because he wrote so many truly moving works, yet, I wish he'd written more. I was especially grateful that you included "Elegie". That might be his most underrated composition.
I saw a performance of the Rhapsody in Nashville a few years ago. I looked around during the eighteenth variation, and half the audience was in tears, as was I. I've been to a lot of classical concerts, and have never seen such a reaction before nor since. I'm not sure whether that work, or the Adagio from the second symphony is the most beautiful music ever written, but one of them certainly is.
Time to start working on part 2 of this video!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you...
Wow Michael, what a remarkable review you have written, I actually read it a couple of times!! I can feel that you love the music of Rachmaninoff even more than I do, and I'm sure you know many of his pieces that I haven't even heard of. Glad that you also love "Elegie"! The 18th Variations and Adagio from the 2nd Symphony are absolutely two of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written! I get tears every time I listen to them. I know what you mean, the video was actually almost 15-minute long at first, and I don't like a long video on my channel, so I removed the 2nd Movement of the Piano Concerto No. 3, Prelude Op. 23, No. 2, Musical Moment No. 4, and Waltz in A major. Hahah..."Time to start working on part 2 of this video" :) You are very welcome, and thank YOU for watching and for the amazing comment!
@@MelodiousHeart1 You're welcome, Kim. Classical music lovers in Kentucky are few and far between, so I really appreciate people like you. Keep up the good work! And yes, Rachmaninoff is my favorite. His second piano concerto is what drew me into classical music, decades ago. Check out the prelude in G Minor, and the Symphonic Dances for your next video.
@@ExSkyCyclePilot I like the Prelude in G minor and Symphonic Dances also, but they aren't my favorites. Will have to keep listening to them and acquire a taste for them. I also like his symphonic poem "Isle of the Dead". Thank you again, Michael! Sincere wishes to you.
@@MelodiousHeart1 We all have different tastes. Nothing wrong with that. But I love Isle of the Dead, too.
Rach is my favourite too!
What a marvelous upload , dear Kim !! I simply adore the music by Rachmaninov ... all his music !! Thank You so much for this exquisite share , my friend !
Wish You a wonderful Sunday, my friend !
How can anybody give a thumb down to this video ?? ..what a shame !!
Warm greetings,

Dear Arlette, another of your comment that I forgot to reply. I remember that you love the music of Rachmaninoff and played some of his pieces beautifully, so your great comment is very special to me. Thank you!! Have a lovely Sunday and a wonderful week!
Thank you for all your work and grace in your posts. They caress the soul.

Piano concerto 2 is absolutely amazing ❤Also, I became part of my University’s orchestra this semester (my first time in an orchestra ever) and played flute 2 for Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini last Friday, and it was such a wonderful and lovely experience. Sitting there on stage for that section when the whole orchestra comes in with the theme after the piano has played it solo was probably more beautiful than anything I’ve ever been part of. 😌 To look up and see the joy on the musician’s faces, on the conductor’s and pianist’s faces, and coursing through you is just so heavenly
Your description of the wonderful experience moved me, I almost felt like I was there myself.
Rach 2 deserved all 3 movements in this video, and I’m so glad it got it
Completely agree.
It's amazing how much inspiration the tune Dies Irae gave him.
Un prezioso documento che mette in risalto le bellissime tematiche Rachmaniane.Bravissime gli esecutori!!!
Thank you very much for my favorite Rachmaninoff!!!! It is great music!! Heartly greetings!!! Have a wonderful day my dear friend!!!
You're very welcome, dear MusicaGran! Thank you very much for your time and kindness!! I appreciate you. Have a great rest of the week!
Amazing and lovely compilation of Rachmaninoff's masterpieces... The performers are all excellent! (^_^) Thank you Kim for this nice work! Cheers and happy weekend to you! Eddy.
You're welcome, and thank you so much for your appreciation for my videos, Eddy! I truly appreciate your visit and comment. Happy weekend to you, too!
Thank you for this video! great one!
I've been a Rachmaninoff fan since I became acquainted with his Piano Concerto No. 2 in my childhood. Now, many years later, I have a big Rachmaninoff collection on CDs, and you might think I don't need to hear excerpts from his works that I know so well. But here I am, listening to these excerpts because they remind me I need a Rachmaninoff fix. BTW, his Symphonic Dances aren't here, but that's a mesmerizing work.
Spot on comment. I'll be a lot of us came to Rachmaninoff through the second Piano Concerto. Rach rocks!
We definately have the same taste. These are exactly the pieces I love most.
Rachmanonoff is my all time favorite composer and I can't believe this will ever be different!
Greetings, Nicoline
Oh, it's so wonderful to know that you love the exact same pieces as I do! Rachmaninoff is definitely one of my top most beloved composers. Thank you very much for watching and for the remarkable comment! I really appreciate it.
His etude tableaux set and liebeslied transcription are incredible too!
It is good to hear good music on your channel.
Thank you so much!!

Oh, I am so glad that you agree with my selection! I also love Op. 16, No. 4 and actually added at first, but deleted it along with a few other pieces to make the video shorter. Thanks for watching and for the great comment!

Awesome performance!
Thank you for watching.
Преклоняюсь перед Вашим трудом!! Все видео замечательны, объемны, интересны. 🥀🥀🥀
Thank you so much!
I love the diversity of tone colours different composers use in their own original ways to tell their stories. Thats why i find it really hard to pick a favourite composer. Rachmaninoff would be up there though. Love his harmonies. Tears at the heart and soul. Love Isle of the Dead, Symphonic Dances, All his piano concertos and symphonies, and choral works, especially The Bells.
I wish you dear Kim my friend a peaceful Christmas time.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful music video
warm greetings ... Hugs...Much love....your friend Lolo
It's wonderful to have your visit, dear Lolo. Thank you! I wish you a memorable Christmas, my friend!!
impossible not to get excited. THUMBS UP!!!
Thank you for your time, Luca! Music excites me every day, throughout the day.
Love it that the last three all come from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2!
I see what you did there ;-)
Piano Concerto No. 2 is my all-time favorite music ever! Thank you for watching.
I'm always surprised by how many classical pieces I recognise though I wouldn't know what they're called. Lovely choices for the video Kim, enjoyed my listen. Enjoy your weekend, all the best.
It's always sweet to 'see' you on my channel, Graham. I really appreciate your visit and great comments! I think you recognized some of these pieces from some movies, and also you may have recognized two pieces from Eric Carmen's songs "All by Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again", (I love these two songs) especially "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" at 4:00. Have a great weekend and hope to see you soon on your side. :)
Hello Kim,
This was a a nice and peaceful way to start the morning with these beautiful compositions of Rachmaninoff. It sure looks like a big production getting all the fine artists together in the orchestra to play such lovely music. I really liked the piano with the cello. All the pieces were very well chosen. You have a ton of class. Thanks for sharing these talents.....enjoy the weekend dear lady.......T\U
Hello Carl, it's so sweet to have your visit and a fantastic comment! I am happy that you liked the piano and cello duets the most. They are my two top favorite instruments, so I am always in favor of duet performances of them. But I do love a big orchestral music too, of course. I just LOVE great music played in any different settings! Thank you, my friend, for being here, and for your kindness that I truly appreciate. Have a pleasant evening and a lovely Sunday!
Bravissimo.
Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini ❤️ I love these videos btw. I think they make classical music more digestible for people who are unfamiliar with composers.

Oh Melodious one ... sabes tocar mis botones sensitivos. Encantadora edición. Te deseo un próspero 2019.
Thank you very much for your kind visit and comment! I wish you a very healthy and happy 2019!!
I agree that Rachmaninoff is an absolute genius of the Romanticism (not the best musician of all times, think of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Schumann) but yes, for me is super special...his creativity, extraordinary sweet enchanting melodies have no parallel in recent history...wow!
very kind thank you
Actually Rachmaninoffs Music is categorated in between the romantic and the modern/new music. This is why he is often called "the last romantic". :)
And if you compare him to other musicians and composers I would use examples that are romantic composers (Chopin, Liszt, Brahms,...) And not barock and classics like Bach and Mozart.
@@abrakadaniel5908 Concur. Just as Beethoven is often considered the Classical - Romantic bridge, Rach. is in many ways the Romantic - Post-Romantic bridge. The First Romantic and the Last Romantic, and two of my absolute favorites.
Why is his piano concerto No.1 such an underrated piece🤔, That's my favorite Rachmaninoff's piece ❣
Ok but have you heard his second and third one though
@@dont8431 tbh I agree, I’ve listened to all and my favorite is the first
They’re all good but imo 2nd and 3rd are just better (my favourite is 3)
Oh btw the most underrated one is the elusive 4th concerto... yes, it exists 😶 you couldn’t believe my shock when I found out

Rachmaninoff... I couldn't understand him in my youth.. fell in love in the recent years.. turbulent, edgy, passionate, romantic.. I guess, I had to grow up to really appreciate his music.. and now I can't get enough of it..
Oh Milana, I am so thrilled to have your visit here! I also wasn't into the music of Rachmaninoff when I was very young. It all happened in the past twenty years or so, and once it happened, I went crazy over it, and I still am. "Turbulent, edgy, passionate, romantic" ~ you used perfect words to describe his music! But I'm not surprised, coming from a phenomenal musician like you. Thank you for the fantastic comment! "See" you soon on your side. :)

Hi Kim, how time changes everything. As i recall the last time we were in touch you were into some really different form/s of music. I had no idea that you love/d classical so much as i do also!! Anyway, i could write forever and ever and ever about each and every single one of your uploads. Bu6t then you'd be to busy trying to answer me (which i know there is much joy in if i'd ever learn to keep things shorter lol) but believe me when i write that you don't want me saying anything but BRAVO BRAVO and please DO carry on!!! Hey James, it's great to have your visit on my channel again! So true time changes everything, but in my case my love for classical music has always been in me since I was a young girl. I just didn't talk about it on my past channels or with you because most people in our group in those days didn't listen to the classical music. It's funny I thought you didn't love classical music either, but now I'm glad to learn that you love it as much as I do. Wow, it's been already 5-6 years since we had our big group of wonderful people and had so much fun. Now most of them are gone from UA-cam, but I still think about them often. My favorite performances of the 3rd concerto :D
Anyone but Helfgott. :)
Some call him overly sentimental, even schmaltzy, but I am not ashamed to say that Rach is on my 5 favorite composers list.
Supreme melodist, but much deeper, as well.
Who tf calls him that

Rach 2 expresses it all and more!

Sublime!

Rach knew he had a hit with the 18th Variation. "That one is for my agent." :)
Absolutely genius variation on a variation.
I love Rhapsody on a theme of paganini
I do, too. The 18th Variation is so beautiful, it's out of this world!
@@MelodiousHeart1 Rachmaninoff knew he had hit a home run with the 18th Variation. He declared, "This one is for my agent."
It is a brilliant use of inversion and key and tempo change.
Probably a coincidence, but there is a passage in Dvorak's "Legends" that is very similar to the melody in Rachmaninoff's 18th variation in the Rhapsody. Curiously, they are both in D flat major. Dvorak wrote the Legends in 1881, Rachmaninoff composed Rhapsody in 1934. Curiously, Dvorak had the theme played just once. Same beauty, but he does not repeat it.
Listen to the Dvorak passage here: ua-cam.com/video/QBjF3YtPTwc/v-deo.html
I love Symphony no.2, It’s simply relaxing
Fan of Sergei Rachmaninoff
I wanted them all to continue.
Hi :) wonderful channel, new S! Cheers
Thanks for subscribing! I appreciate it.
Giving themselves whiplash
The long meandering opening orchestral theme of the Rach 2 is epic. ...and uniquely Russian.
The 3rd concerto,a concerto Rachmaninoff wrote for his first American tour,it's my favorite.
This mighty piece is famous for its melodic beauty and technical difficulty.
The quick waltz in the 2nd movement is Rachmaninoff’s homage to Tchaikovsky.
Next time dear Μelodious,to bring it to us to hear it.
Cordial greetings from Greece.Have a happy weekend.
Vasilis.
SUPER MELODIOUS LIKE . 3 .!!!
I saw Olga Kern perform the third concerto with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra a few years ago. The finale to that piece soars, and when you think it can't possibly go any higher, it does. I was so overcome by the time that piece came to an end that my wife thought the staff was going to have to carry me out of Symphony Hall. It took me several minutes to regain my composure. I was utterly overcome...
It's always a pleasure to have your visit and great comment, Vasilis. Thank you very much! I originally used the 2nd movement of the 3rd piano concerto but deleted it to avoid a long video. I didn't know that it was a homage to Tchaikovsky. It will definitely be in my sequel video if I decide to make it. I wish you a beautiful, inspiring weekend!
That's quite a story, Michael! I have been to many classical concerts (including Olga Kern concert) and shedded many tears but never felt anything as strong as you felt after Olga Kern concert. It's refreshing that someone gets moved by music as much as I do, or perhaps even stronger.
@@MelodiousHeart1 I have always felt that I was the only one moved to such depths by music. I'm glad to know that there is at least one other person out there that "gets it" - you!

Sublime 👍👌❤🌈💕🙏🥰
Great video, and great selections; there will always be favorites that others wish were on the list. Mine is his song "How lovely is this place" [Zdes' khorosho]. Lovely, simple, stunning. Listen to a sung version first [Julia Westendorp or Kathleen Battle], not a piano solo version.
I just heard the song you mentioned, the vocal version first and the piano version afterwards. I must say that the vocal adds much more colors to the song. What a divinely beautiful song, I absolutely loved it! Thanks for mentioning it!
Personally i would love to see rach 3 3rd movement here instead of the first. Their both perfwct but i think the 3rd movement is more perfect😆
I'll take all three movements of it, thank you. :)

That define piece and then a flow of music. Thank you so much
Hello Ran, I just saw that I haven't replied to your comment yet. Thanks for the great suggestion, but I'm afraid that I'm not a good writer or speaker in defining classical pieces.

@@maitreyeeye4737 I could see what you were talking about when I saw the young woman's beautiful smile, listening to Rachmaninoff's music. She didn't even notice that the man left. Thanks for the link. That was very interesting.
@@MelodiousHeart1 yes, thank you for observing\watching this short episode; concerning myself, I find that the 2-nd Rachamninov's piano concert is the best between\among all piano's concerts; also I was surprised and shocked when brilliant talented blind japan pianist played it so virtuosic and mastery as Van Cliburn himself in Moscow at 1957
@@maitreyeeye4737 You're welcome. Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto is my absolute favorite concerto of all time. I love the blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii but haven't seen him play Rachmaninov, so I will check it out soon. I saw Van Cliburn's live performance about 12 years ago, 3-4 years before he died. It was one of the classical music concerts I will never forget.
Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini var 18, I wish so much he would have made this into a piano concerto. Such an amazing piece, but so short.
Wow, I have never thought of that, but it really would have been fantastic! I agree the 18th Variation is too short, because it's so incredibly beautiful.
@@MelodiousHeart1 It is also one of the most creative variations on a theme -- sheer brilliance.
@@johne7345 I agree with you.
For a long time, my all time favorite symphonic work was the Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 in E (or E Minor). It still is high up, and when I hear it, or any part of it, as in your well put together piece here, I realize once again why it was my favorite. My favorite one now is Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, followed by his Symphony No. 7. What do you think of those, Melodious Heart?
I like Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 very much and like Symphony No. 7, but my favorite symphony by Dvorak is No. 9. Dvorak's No. 9 is like Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 for me, the two works of music that I will never get tired of listening to.
The andante from 2nd symphony is divine.
It is divine, indeed! One of my favorite movements of all piano concertos.
