  • After 2 years the base M3 MacBook Pro 14" finally got a much deserved redesign... and of course a new chip to go along with it. But for $1600, are you really getting your money's worth with this base M3 chip? In this video I test the brand new M3 MacBook Pro 14" (8gb), briefly running benchmarks and more importantly real-world creative workflows to see where the chip stacks up alongside the M2 MacBook Air (8gb) and the cheapest space black M3 Pro MacBook Pro (18gb). Spoiler alert: benchmarks aren't everything! The results here are definitely interesting...

*ATTENTION:* (in 1:20-2:00) someone has brought to my attention that my spoken percentages in the benchmark portion are incorrect and thankfully *_undervalued_* (i did some wack ass, sleep deprived math haha). *for geekbench 6,* at 1:20 it should be _"a 20% and 19% improvement over the M2 respectively..."_ at 1:31 it should be _"a 20% improvement over the M3... and a 43% over the M2 multicore and respectively of course..."_ *for cinebench,* at 1:46 it should be _"a 26% improvement over the M2... a 27% improvement over the M3... and a 60% improvement over the M2."_
shoutout to @abeoist for taking the time to do the math right! hopefully this doesn't detract from the main point of the video which are the creative demos lol. in the future i will make sure to triple check my math. apologies! stay tuned for more :)

Finally what i was looking for, the difference between m2 air and base m3 MBP since thats what most people will actually be deciding between 👍

8GB ram for the starting base price point of $1599 is criminal. I will die on this hill, it's freaking ridiculous.

@@Holden_McHocka ton of swap memory being used there. I'll choke that laptop in no time. Not enough memory. 8GB of memory works for 1080p60 edits. Not 4K in 120. Need 36GB of memory and you can't get that on the M3. Need the M3 Pro to get it. You might need 48GB of memory for it, then you'll have to get the M3 Max for that, and you pay $4000 for it.

ok, I am thinking of getting one, but I found that adobe reader pro not the reader version lag horribly no matter how empty the pdf page is, can you please help me clarify if this matter exist in m3 Mbp?

Only big jump for M3 and M3 pro is in 3D rendering. Otherwise, just incremental stuff.

Am i seeing this right but does the M3 pro have smaller display bezels?
Or is it because its black that it appears thinner?

It's nice to see a comparison, but man PLEASE get your percentages right. You're wrong on all the benchmarks. 11830 multi-core is a 19% (not 16) improvement over 9935, a 3169 is a 20% (not 17) improvement over 2645, 14254 is a 20.5% (not 8) improvement over 11830, and 43.5% (not 30) improvement over 9935. Cinebench is also wrong. Idk how you arrived at these numbers, but I assume you meant 18% instead of 8 and you probably divided the smaller number by the bigger and then subtracted that result from 1. This way you get how much slower the previous gen is, not how much faster current gen is, which is a BIG difference. If previous gen scores 50 and current gen scores 100, then current gen is 100% faster than previous, and previous is 50% slower than current. In a world where a couple % means a lot to some people (including myself) it's important to get these numbers correctly ;)
Edit: Because of that I skipped over half of your video and did the math myself, then didn't keep watching till the end. That hurts retention which is a shame, because other than that the video is high quality.

Most of the heavy lifting for video editing is done by the hardware encoders and decoder aka "Media Engine" . Every new mac release, I sigh at all the youtube videos that show video editing comparisons to gauge the new processors. Video editing is a very bad barometer for that. It doesn't scale like we and these youtubers assume.

i'm aware that the new chips are more aimed at 3D/graphical improvements. nonetheless these are popular enough tasks with these devices so i'm glad i've realized this update doesn't make too much of a difference in some respects :)

People are very strange on how much they got the M3 wrong. So, here we go. The M2 was supposed to be the M3, but the algorithm to do 3D graphics was too slow and used too much power. Apple put the M2 into 5nm-ish tech and put the M1 graphics engine back. That's the M2. Then, Apple went to Blender and got them to fix the problem, and they did. So, the M3 is the M2 with the newly repaired M3 graphics engine done in faster 3nm tech. The A17 for the iPhone was also made extremely similar, in fact, it runs the same executables. So, what is Apple doing? Think. For the first time, anywhere, a complete line of computers from phone to TV box to computer runs the same AAA games at reasonable speeds. That a lot of customers. 850 Million customers, low end, and they all need games.

makes sense! for these tasks it's interest to see how the new architecture doesn't make too much of a difference. that's why in there future i hope to expand into some more 3D/graphics related stuff (probably VFX). in the meantime, i have a Minecraft test I'm going to do so maybe i'll take better advantage of the new chips in that scenario :D
