    While you're right that in English we often borrow nautical terms from Dutch (such as sloop and schooner) due to your early sea exploration, along with the Portuguese, it's also the case that Dutch and English will share some terms naturally since they are technically related. In this case, starboard comes from native English "steer" + "board". 😉

      Yes that's true. As I understand it the languages derive from the same historical origin. Middle English and Frisian, for example, are very similar.
