  • Taking The 2019 Suzuki Vitara ALLGRIP Off-Road
    A few weeks back I tested the new Suzuki Vitara (full review coming soon) and seeing as this particular model is fitted with Suzuki's ALLGRIP all wheel drive technology, I seemed it would be a waste not to try it out and to see whether it's any good.
    So I headed to a greenlane near me to see what's what.
    The Suzuki Vitara shown in this video is the range-topping SZ5, which is fitted with the same 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol used in the Swift Sport (albeit with a little less torque), which is mated to Suzuki's ALLGRIP all wheel drive system via a 6-speed manual gearbox.

    I own one in Costa Rica. I've put it to the test. I get 45 on the highway with high octane fuel on auto mode, then in sport mode its sufficiently peppy and fun to drive on these winding mountain roads. This car is super light and in lock 4x4, it's very well at climbing up slippery muddy roads. Even in inclines. It's not real torquey nor does it have the clearance for safari type mudriding but if you want a car very capable of getting you through sandy beaches, muddy roads and up slippery inclines but still handles like a top and gets you amazing gas mileage this is the all around choice. I also have an awd crv that doesn't even come close to capabilities. The honda CRV gets only 34 compared to 45 and isn't offroad capable in the least bit. The vitara is far more fun to drive but sure it has somewhat of a cheaper interior but the price makes up fo it. Plus I find it much easier to wash. I don't care so much about whether some of the plastic in the car is "Soft touch" or not. The Crv does have quite s bit of space but for my wife, my toddler and me I find the vitara just as suitable space wise. The seats go down very nicely and there's plenty of space to haul things. I would close the vitara over the Honda for functionality, drivability, gas economy and it's offroad capability anyday.

    THIS is the video that demonstrates the significant difference between the Vitara and most of its competitors in this vehicle segment!

    I bought one of these new, 3 years ago and after owning a Jeep, i would say the only thing holding back this car off road, would primarily be poor ground clearance. I could add the lack of low range too, but i find this isn't used much anyway! But, its surprising the sort of very steep rutted bush tracks this car will take me.

    Glad you tested this car in a more off road conditions than your previous review. Also I agree with a comment below that it's nice you were honest and did it with regular tyres and not much off road experience, as it would reflect the majority of users. Good point.

    I loved this review, you was honest about everything, even when your partner said "You can edit that bit out" ( 10:18 ). The fact that you had little off road experience and the regular road tyres was a great example to use to give out a clear point! I've gave you a like and a sub!

    Great review. Lovely natural explanation without sales hype. Your'e saying most people probably won't take it off road. This is the very reason I'm watching your video. There are so many videos showing 4 wheel drive vehicles, but not showing the off road capability. The only thing I'm not sure about is it's ability to climb a steep hill with wet grass. I currently have a 4.4 litre Range Rover (I use all the buttons on it). Having said that, I'm pretty sure the Suzuki would take me to where I want to go. Thanks

    I normally Drive a 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 but for winter driving and longer trips we drive a Subaru Outback. I'm thinking of changing the Subaru for a current model Vitara (i've had several Suzukis before). Living in rural Sweden often driving on bad roads, ice and snow, this was a good video showing the Vitaras capabilities from an ordinary drivers experience.

    Hi, we live in New Zealand and have owned our Vitara 2015 1.6 Allgrip since new and it's now done just over 125000Km and have had no problems just one brake light got replaced last year and that's it. Due to us going a lot off rd The best thing we did with ours was to get rid of those stupid road tires and replaced them with proper AT tires - Falcon 215/60R17 - this gave the vehicle lots more grip / traction and are more suited for this type of vehicle as it is advertised as an on/off road vehicle (not 4X4). The falcons also makes the vehicle look more aggressive and by going to a larger size tire we also gained a little more ground clearance. other than that its a great vehicle made by Suzuki. Cheers Glenn v from NZ

Exccept for tyres and ground clearance, this Suzuki will do all I want and you showed me that. Why change from Jimny? The Vitara is more luxurious and smoother on road (and off), I am older now (70) and want a bit more comfort than Jimny provides.. I was looking for a 2024 Viara 4wd off road review BUT this was all I could find, same car anyhow. That lassie was an assett in the end and made the journey more enjoyable as women always do. I'm no expert, but I don't think you'll find the 4WD Lock has anything to do with the ESP mode, let alone putting it 'up to its maximum setting'. In fact, if it's anything like the older Grand Vitara (which it may well not be, as the Grand Vitara has a far more serious 4WD system), putting on the lock mode actually switches off the ESP.

      That would be a really good comparison to have actually! I guess making the videos on different days the conditions would be different so can't read too much into it, but still would be interesting to see where it struggles / succeeds compared to the Vitara.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Рік тому +1

      Hi Roy, thanks for your comment, but for reference, I do not own a PS5. The path was more than slightly 'muddy' and the car did not belong to me, so I did not want to damage it. If you understood how difficult it is to build trusting relationships to get access to test cars you'd understand why I would be concerned about handing a car back damaged.

    This is not off-road just muddy tracks. You can drive this in any car.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  2 роки тому

      I disagree. Yes, some parts can be done in any car, but other parts are rutty, uneven and would require adequate ground clearance. By all means feel free to take a sportscar down there and see how you get on.

      Hello Dingo en Ruta, thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching. Yes, I can see where you're coming from, but as I admitted myself, I am not the most experienced off-road driver, I'll be the first to make that clear. However, one could argue that this makes me the ideal person to test the car because if an idiot like me can drive the car off-road with no real issues, then it highlights how capable the car is. Having said that, I have done more off-roading since, therefore my experience is growing slowly but surely 👍
