For those who'd like an explanation of the video: every time the camera spins around is a re-remembering of the wedding. A little better than the last time.
And then on the final spin chaos breaks loose. Reminding you that humankind, while capable of evolving culturally, is still prone to devolving into chaos even in the "best" of times.
@@TrevorMFTW I see it as the bride remembering her wedding for what it really was rather than how everyone else sees it, who are trying to make it out to be better than it actually was. Yano the whole stigma around memory.. the further away a memory is the nicer it seems but for her it’s not like that because it was her wedding and it probably effected her whole life (notice how she isn’t pregnant in the last memory but the real her is)
@@dustinsanders7257 well, if you watch the video you’ll notice the wedding gets better with every turn, until the end where it is at it’s “best” because it was a long time ago at this point so you are more prone to remembering the good things (which is psychologically true) but for some people the wedding had nothing good to remember- the bride and the woman that threw someones drink- (and probably others) so at the end this is the real bride coming into the wedding and showing them how it really was- after all she’s more likely to remember how it was because it’s her wedding. She causes damage and points a knife at everyone because they’re intruding the real memory and they’re basically imposters of her memory because if you watch the first camera rotation there were a lot less people and they seemed a lot more miserable and even dressed different... This is just my take on it anyway you don’t need to understand or follow it 🤷🏻♂️
What made me optimistic about this album is that the songs get better the more you listen to them. Always a good sign when songs have to grow on you. Vinyl preordered my man!
Video is amazing. The scene is literally turning from a shit scenario to a perfect one as it loops just how "eventually all terrible memories turn to great ones" Then at the end the actual memories storm in and ruin the manufactured perfection bring it back to reality
This is a song I listened to a lot after a breakup from a very toxic relationship. It helped me see things for what they were and not through rose colored glasses, because eventhough I knew and remembered how I felt throughout the relationship, thinking about the memories we made together would make me miss the relationship a lot. That's what this song did for me, remind me why I left him
Every time you recall a memory, you unintentionally alter it. Alterations can be repeatedly made in a direction that emphasizes certain parts of that story (exaggerations like "oh I remember how that guy was sooo tall" just because him being tall stuck out the most to you). Now for something as joyous as a wedding, though the actual day might have been in a dingy room with a small cake and miserable guests, the person whose perspective the video represents is able to overlook the problems of yesterday and focus on the overall brightness of the occasion. So each time they recall the memory, it's altered in a more positive direction, until the end where they begin to dwell on one of the imperfect parts of the wedding (pregnant bride, drinking lady) and let it taint the otherwise great progress they were making to move forward.
I wonder how much math and effort was put into this video. Every time around, the actors had to perform their actions as the camera was on them, and change dressing. The camera takes exactly 1:00 every time around, and each time it's recorded at a higher framerate and wider aspect ratio. Not only that, but Kevin and the band had to be on time with the lyrics and instrumentation even though the framerate was raised and speed was lowered. Incredible. Each time I watch it, I notice more and more things. It is the perfect metaphor for false nostalgia. I love it. EDIT: A lot of people seem to be pointing out that there are cuts between each section of the video, and that seems very likely. But even with the separate takes, they still would have to figure out the exact timing for each event to take place and still have the lyrics and music match up with the new frame rate.
i was thinking about that as well, how it would be really hard to get the vocals lined up each time so i went looking for other transitions. there might be another one at 0:36 where its panning across the empty tables. it still looks like it would have been a nightmare to shoot either way though
@@zebbleganubi723 Wait now I'm confused on where the tricky parts are? What I see is the main transition for the scene and aspect ratio change is when the waiter's back walks into the frame, they probably added his back as a mask layer to the previous frame/video to help transition. Then for the actors it's probably positioning, choreography and direction with sound indicators maybe. There's no specific lyric they're aiming for when panning to TI, though the first and third chorus do seem to line up, so there probably was adjustment in timing and speed of camera movements there, later polished in editing. And then for the slow motion part I'd assume they've done that thing where you speed up the song and have the singer lipsync to the sped up version so it looks dreamy when slowed down and is in line with the regular song. Is there something more I missed? I'm genuinely asking🙈, I'm not an expert in filmography. But yeah I do agree calculating it well would have been very tricky.
Kevin, if you ever see this comment, just know that this song has really helped me to get over some shit in my past that I had a really hard time letting go of. Thank you man.
I still look back on this song and comment and it really reminds me about how I didnt kill myself. I know its not the greatest song ever made, but for what it said and when it said it, it hit me hard.
The music video is about how we embellish memories more and more as time passes. The first scene is the truth, with all the sadness, anger, embarrassment, and happiness that comes with it. As the scenes progress, the wedding reception gradually turns into a hyper-perfect unrealistic fantasy where the key characters are changed into “better” ones with entirely different actors for the bride, groom, smoking woman, father, etc. But then the original pregnant bride and smoking woman break into this unrealistic fantasy, refusing to be forgotten or glossed over, and wreck the fake party. This is my analysis, hope it helps!
I really like how the memories literally change the people involved, like the smoking lady and the pregnant bride by the third act. It's like when we try to forget the bad people that were part of our lives and memories, until they come back to remind us that yes, _they_ happened.
Also, the couple at the bar! It's definitely my favorite detail because it hits home a lot. How the lady is very annoyed by the guy's advances, and doesn't feel anything for him. But in the end it's just like "aww, what a cute couple" I say it hits home because it just happens a lot. There's this couple that we think that they look good together, that we think they should've stayed together, and we start to remember the times in which they were happy together, except that these memories and just sugarcoated, and their relationship was far more complicated than how we remembered it.
Seeing the escalation of change throughout all the people with each camera loop with a twist end of a terrible memory (like in the lyrics) showing that eventually this moment will be a good memory with time. The symbolism is amazing in this. Shows how people change too.
This video is incredibly underrated. There's so much meaning behind it, and it's fucking awesome the way after the second chorus everything turns slow-motion, but keeps up with the song speed
I thought it was funny how in every version of this wedding that drunk lady is always on the dance floor having fun 👏 So at least in all of these “memories” of this wedding, everyone at least remembers her having a good time
th more a tighter th aspect ratio the more claustrophic (though it varies from the context of the scene , thought in the scene the director wants us to feel uneasy ) the wider the aspect ratio ltterally the more we feel "wider " and have more freedom
@@Sepulchure68 Nah it's just to represent the eras evolving, try to notice the party and people get more modern with every cycle. But it might also be what you said idk.
I got the same vibe from this, especially the end when those characters bust in and smash the things that led to worse days. Totally embeds itself in so many facets, definitely 'using' is in there.
A visual representation of how the past is seen through rose tinted glasses, beginning with the event then moving to how the people remember it later on
I know this sounds strange, but i felt a huge connection to each character somehow. How they all were bored, passive agressive, hurt, annoyed at the beginning and slowly starting to open up, having fun, trying to forget, smiling, dancing and letting go. This shows exactly how we human beings are fragile in many ways. ´´Eventually terrible memories turned into great ones.´´ that is a huge part of this song and video, I think. That we are longing for the past, we are denying how terrible our past was but making it seem like it was everything and better than today. Like fuck, this can get SO deep on so many levels. fucking love Kevin Parker.

There are some AMAZING details in this video...The guy with his hand caught in the machine at 0:36 is leaning on it looking cool during the 2nd go-through, then there isn't a machine at all, by 3:23 he's helping an old lady to her seat...Like the lyrics say "terrible memories turn into great ones". We always alter our memories, sometimes according to how we want to see ourselves.
I find myself watching this video over and over to see how the characters present in the first iteration evolve with each successive cycle. I see new things every time and the song just keeps sounding better
About a year ago this song was playing on the radio a lot and I had moved to a new place and had a completely different kind of job and this song made a big impact on me because at that point I regretted my whole life but now I don’t regret my life. It’s my life.
I am ready to assign this video to my student as a film literature assignment. I think the first pass is the "actual" event/memory (wedding). Each successive pass is the revised memories of some of the guests: nicer clothes, elegant style, appearances that indicate successes in life: the father figure at the cake table goes from sullen to joyful, the bridesmaid pairs with the guy mouthing "I love you" to the bride(?), the couple at the bar go from contempt to engaged; the guy at the end of the bar becomes a sailor; the band goes from reel to reel to live musicians; the woman on the phone goes from sad to happily hugging a man; the wheelchair-bound man goes from chair, to walker, to standing; the food tables, decorations, the mother figure and the wedded couple become idealized. The final scene may represent how the bride and some attendants at the wedding feel about the original memory: what ties them together is the bride and the mother figure, who are both represented the same as in the first scene. The bride's real contempt for the original situation is revealed ("... that was time that I hated from day one/eventually terrible memories turn into great ones...")("The period, you never had/There's only one that matters"). The mother figure snatching the champagne glass out of the idealized version of her signifies her disappointment and contempt of how she was/has been portrayed/remembered. All of the characters remember and for some of them the memories were distorted in ways that may have been difficult for some of them to face.
"cause it might've been something, don't say cause it has to be lost in yesterday" I felt that. He's a musical genius. I really wanna do a song with Tame this year!! 🙏
A nice little touch to the song is at 4:01 the end when the reality of the wedding occurs, one can notice the quality of music go way down and becomes distorted. even the music sounded better in his head. nice nuance
I want to know why people don't appreciate this beautiful music and other imaginative, creative music, it seems that most just like brands, mainstream 🤔
Omg omg omg I heard this on the radio the other day and enjoyed it so much that I was lost in the moment of it and by the time I realized I should Shazam it to find out who it was, the song was over I was so upset wondering if I'd ever hear it again 😩 but I've just gone down a music rabbit hole on UA-cam and ended up here and I cannot tell you how fookinnnnnn happy I am right now 😂💖
I needed this song so much. For the past 7 months I’ve waisted my time being nostalgic and thinking about the past getting lost in yesterday, when it wasn’t even that great, that I was missing out on now. God bless everyone, remeber to live in the present moment. And thank u tame impala for creating such beautiful art,
The lyrics , video, song in general moved me. I’m a 20 year old married mother with a 2 month old baby and everyday I feel deeply nostalgic about the past but in reality I was just as sad as today. Kevin reminded me that this moment, right now, today is what truly matters. I cannot go back.
Having your first kid makes you evolve into the real you. Get through the hormones and depression and realize your future is actually now. Not in the past
This song touches my soul and my entire being …… I cannot express how much I love this group and appreciate how amazing he is…. This level of music surpasses all of the rest!!!!!! I’m in love with it AND it makes me fall in love with myself too
For me this meant elevating your vibrations to match a better reality for yourself. Its gradually done, getting better day by day. Don’t get lost in how yesterday was and picture a better tomorrow!
So, the only people who haven't changed much is the lady in the dance floor and the man on the column chilling to the song and having a good time. Their reality was only slightly altered, no matter what the situation they are in the NOW, there is so much depth to this video. Only Tame Impala could pull this off.
How I perceive this video - you should treat your memories of past experiences like a great host, to openly invite them to a drink, have a friendly talk with them, even cherish them. The really positive message in this one.

Just watched this for the 100th time and JUST realized that everything changes each time it circles around
Yano the whole stigma around memory.. the further away a memory is the nicer it seems but for her it’s not like that because it was her wedding and it probably effected her whole life (notice how she isn’t pregnant in the last memory but the real her is)
better? I'm pretty sure the cake got ruined and someone got slapped.
This is just my take on it anyway you don’t need to understand or follow it 🤷🏻♂️
@@ali-5881 GREAT expansion and explanation of the cake-in-the face. Love it :) .

Video is amazing. The scene is literally turning from a shit scenario to a perfect one as it loops just how "eventually all terrible memories turn to great ones"

Nice
This really strucks a case against nostalgia of a certain time of one's life...
Damn... good analysis!
Yeah exactly, that's what the makers of Inside Out tried to convey as well
I love this, and I want a video for "Posthumous Forgiveness"
My favorite song of his
Kevin is a generational talent, privileged to hear his music.
Time's Up no that sounds right haha, still awesome nonetheless
this needs more likes bc i was thinking the exact same thing lmao
they obviously filmed all parts separately and then edited it to be like that. smh

Me too!!
But in the end it's just like "aww, what a cute couple"
I say it hits home because it just happens a lot. There's this couple that we think that they look good together, that we think they should've stayed together, and we start to remember the times in which they were happy together, except that these memories and just sugarcoated, and their relationship was far more complicated than how we remembered it.
why do you think everyone is stupid?
👏🏻 I love comments like this.
Great analysis! Thanks! Whose memory do you think it represents?
Seeing the escalation of change throughout all the people with each camera loop with a twist end of a terrible memory (like in the lyrics) showing that eventually this moment will be a good memory with time. The symbolism is amazing in this. Shows how people change too.
Bucky Bear “they say people never change but that’s bull shit. They do” - kevin parker

Did you guys notice that even the aspect ratio of the screen changes as the wedding memories gets better?
I do now. Great catch
yes, at first it was square and after a while i suddenly noticed the screen was rectangular
omg its so subtle
th more a tighter th aspect ratio the more claustrophic (though it varies from the context of the scene , thought in the scene the director wants us to feel uneasy ) the wider the aspect ratio ltterally the more we feel "wider " and have more freedom

I was waiting for this comment
He's a genius.
Ayush Shukla he really is
Now I just need a video to “might be time”
Lyrics
When we were living in squalor,
Wasn't it heaven?
Back when we used to get on it
Four outta seven
Now even though that was a time I
Hated from day one
Eventually, terrible memories
Turn into great ones
So if they call you
Embrace them
If they hold you
Erase them
'Cause it might have been something, who's to say?
Does it help to get lost in yesterday?
And you mighta missed something, don't say
'Cause it has to be lost in yesterday
And you're gonna have to let it go someday
You've been digging it up like Groundhog Day
'Cause it might have been something, don't say
'Cause it has to be lost in yesterday
Matty said life didn't go the
Way that he planned it
Said, "Oh, what I'd give to start over
Boy, I'd command it"
So what was I ever afraid of,
Why did I worry?
And why was I ever so brainless?
Head in a flurry
'Cause if they call you
Embrace them
If they stall you
Erase them
'Cause it might have been something, who's to say?
Does it help to get lost in yesterday?
And you mighta missed something, don't say
'Cause it has to be lost in yesterday
And you're gonna have to let it go someday
You've been digging it up like Groundhog Day
'Cause it might have been something, don't say
'Cause it has to stay lost in yesterday
So if it calls you
Embrace it
If it haunts you
Face it
I know it's mad
I understand
It's only snakes
And ladders
The period
You never had
There's only one
That matters
And if it calls you
Embrace it
If it holds you
Erase it (replace it)
Thnx for the likes =)

Also the way the room itself becomes better decorated and better lit, including the curtains on the walls. The lighting becomes brighter and gauzier.
well put, thank you. i feel this indicates that the mother and daughter are the ones "lost in yesterday" by their ransacking of the best memory.
No, they're clearly all vampires and different weddings happened in different decades. Leave interpretation to the experts like me, dummy.
@user-mv9tt4st9k The third take, I'm not even sure that's the original couple as newlyweds anymore.
"cause it might've been something, don't say
cause it has to be lost in yesterday"
I felt that. He's a musical genius. I really wanna do a song with Tame this year!! 🙏
Not really, youre wrong
why didnt you do a song with him last year though?
A nice little touch to the song is at 4:01 the end when the reality of the wedding occurs, one can notice the quality of music go way down and becomes distorted. even the music sounded better in his head. nice nuance
I think it’s so you can hear the sound effects better but yeah it works with what you’re saying
Bit of a stretch but I see the idea
I don’t hear it
Nah my man. There’s just a lot of racket going on in that ending scene. Disagree.
youuui that’s totally cool, it is art and up to interpretation. even if it varies greatly.
