Forget what anybody says about your playing ( which you can play apparently ) . As long as you enjoy it is all that counts .amp sounded good . Did the 12ay7 trick and it worked very well . Volume is more usable and thank you for that .

I appreciate the support, but the "troll" apologized and I don't want him to read a bunch of attacks.
I very much want to keep the channel about amps and guitars, not about me. Plenty of UA-cam personalities out there, and I don't want to get into that game.
Once Covid passes or we get to whatever the new normal will be, I'll be back to featuring my truly pro playing friends when possible.
But my G chords are sublime...

Hey man dont worry about those people. Most of us who watch are like you. Interested in repairs. I have been playing for 50 years and would never ask about your playing ou sound good to me. Makes no difference. We should all still improving all the time. I have been an electronics tech for 40 years and still learn tricks from people like yourself. Keep it up my freind.

I've learned a great deal from watching your videos; considering the subject matter, I wouldn't have thought a demonstration of picking prowess would even be called for. The only thing I've learned from trolls is that they're annoying...

I used to gig out. And I'd do a 30 minute warm up before playing. I don't have time to do that for the amp demos. Hard enough to make the time to edit them together while getting my actual work done.
But maybe someday I'll do a proper warm up and really play, opposed to early morning fumblings through parts I last played years ago...
      Egos are weird things.

I have been blessed that in 15+ years my HRD has only needed one checkup. I put a 12at7 in v1 and it made a huge improvement. I may try the 12ay7 like you recommend.

Great series on the HRD . I do most of these mods too on the many that I get in , but the phase inverter and screen resistor problems are something new that I shall now look out for also , thanks . Glad to hear that you do the V1 , V3 changes as I discovered this through necessity / experimentation and recommend this to customers . I'd certainly do it if I owned an HRD as it makes the amp usable across the whole sweep , rather than 0 to 2 .
In the UK we convert the mains TX from stock 230V primary wiring as received to 240V primary wiring (UK mains voltage) .This lowers voltages in the amp by approx. 4% . They manufacture it like this as a compromise for the European market , as the rest of the continent has 220V mains voltage .

Hey Lyle, just saw this video! I'm in my early 70's and have learned so much from watching what you do and how well you explain what you're doing. I also have watched your interactive programs, that you've recently held and is always amazed at the great information that you pass on to us novice. I plan on doing all the modifications that you have performed, on my Fender HT
Deville 4x10. The sound that comes out of the amp that you're playing is wonderful!! Btw, you play guitar just fine. Look forward to more videos, thanks again!

Why would it matter wether you can play like a guitar god or not, some of the best guitar techs can’t but they understand how a amp circuits works and how to fix and sometimes improve on them, you deserve a bigger audience and many more subscribers, maybe you should of questioned his ear and his abilities. Keep up the good work

Thanks very much. I don't really mind the criticism - I know what to expect on UA-cam. It was just kind of funny - what all musicians think about themselves. And then I had to do another video.
I would love for the channel to grow. It's almost random luck what people latch onto. I'll just keep soldering on and see what happens.
I do love that I can share videos with the amp owners throughout the process. They know what I'm doing and why, and they can usually hear why work is needed. Keeps them informed, and I don't want clients to think I'm throwing around a bunch of techno babble to justify an invoice.

@@PsionicAudio You mentioned you had a physical /!health problem. Many people that have injuries deal with them the best they can. A major shoulder injury made the great Steve Lukather change his approach to how he plays. Some folks don’t understand how mentally and physically demanding guitar playing is until something happens. I think is wonderful that you stay active in the music biz as a tech and a player.

I am barely past a beginner guitarist, yet I understand circuits, signal flow, capacitance, resistance, impedance, and what all of these do to an audio signal. I was a 25U(signal systems support specialist) in the U.S. Army for 13 years and these are all things you MUST know if you wand to be great at your job. Having that knowledge translates greatly when you are upgrading or modding electronics in a guitar or amp or synthesizer ect. So no I can't play like a guitar god either but I bet you I would know my way around an amps circuit WAY better than some idiot troll. Keep up the great videos. Just got a new subscription

You’ve got a great feel brother. Nice playing. These videos have been great on the HRD. I’ve had one for years and always wondered if it could be improved upon. I use the JHS “little black box” in the effects loop to cut the volume and allows me to get the clean volume around 6 where I like it. You’re mods are on a whole level higher. Very cool. If you want to hear me play my amp it’s all over my last MAJIK BAND album “Mycelium”. It’s on UA-cam and all the audio streaming services. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Excellent video...you really know your business...hey the 12AY7 and the 12AT7...I've used the 12AT7 for years in HRD's to sort of tame the output, but I'm unsure of where you suggest installing the 12AY7 in addition to the 12AT7............don't want to put it in the wrong place - or does it matter? Also, I just aquired another HRD and it's a 'Made in the USA' version from '98 with a Celestion Vintage 30 that sounds a little tired...I'd like to try the creamback 65W at some point, but not until I've replaced the filter caps, cement resistors, and checked the board for old or broken solder joints...again, excellent videos. I love these amps, and it's fun to get inside there and work on them...I'm slowly aquiring more and more knowledge about what to look for and how to improve on the performance...thanks !

I am fairly (7 years in at age 65) new to playing guitar, I have always enjoyed your videos for your technical expertise. With that said, I feel you play very well. I am thinking of buying a HRD. I am a complete newb to the thought of "modding". If you change the 12AY7 and the 12AT7, can they or should they be balanced? A recommendation on where to buy them if they can't be sourced locally is also appreciated. I appreciate you time and expertise. Thank you

if you really want to take your hot rod to the next level:
1.swap the crappy stock speaker to a celestion creamback or if you can afford it an alnico cream
2.swap v1 tube to a vintage ge12ax7wa for blackface cleans , a brimar for warmth, rca for crunch or my favorite mullard i63 for smoothness
    3.enjoy!

Really enjoy your videos. I have the same amp with the Creamback. I had the maintenance work done to to make the amp more reliable and did the reverb mod to make it a little more usable. I am now thinking of doing the AY7 in v1 and AT7 in V3. Do you have more info on the other mods? Master volume… I have been reading about the tone stack mod but not sure if it makes that much difference. Would really like to use the drive/more drive without the amp getting really bassey and flubby. Right now I use the amp as a pedal platform but would be nice to use the drive channel…

    • @markleyva3108
      @markleyva3108 2 роки тому +1

I haven’t used my HRD in years, but when I gigged with it I learned to use the Drive/More Drive effectively. Just start by EQing the amp for that channel. You’ll sacrifice a bit of tone on the clean channel. An alternative would be to have an EQ pedal in your chain and use it to pull out some bass.
Another idea. The HRD is great in the Drive channel if you put just a bit of hair on it, use that as your base tone then supplement with More Drive or pedals. The slightly driven Drive channel is a better base tone (IMO) than the pure clean channel.

The opamps here are not used for drive. The 4560 just controls channel switching, has no impact on the audio.

Bob Moog didn’t play music, and neither did Leo. I love how guitar “skill” is the metric for one’s knowledge of equipment and topology 😂 some of the best players I know are clueless, knuckle-draggers when it comes to gear. They spend all their time playing 🤷🏻‍♂️ like you said about Stevie Ray and Robben Ford, when the Dumble topic was exploding in your live chat recently, “…do you know how much time those guys spent talking about tubes?”

  • @wearesofucked
    @wearesofucked 3 роки тому

I just got a HRDIII and it’s very brittle. Not quite “there”. I am looking around for possible mods to the amp to fix some of the tonal issues. The clean channel is very satisfying but overall thin compared to other fender amps. My main issue is the overdrive channel tho. It’s very flubby/farty and brittle. I’m beginning to think it’s just going to be like that. Thoughts? It’s a very unhinged and erratic amplifier but I love the whole concept and I really don’t want to dump it.

    • @giulioluzzardi7632

A graphic eq pedal will give you a massive choice of tones. If you want to keep it simple try a Jensen p12q speaker it warms the tone up and thickens the drive. I did it and now I cant stop playing it.

Add a fan and you won't have burn issues. This amp gets too hot and should have a fan installed.

    • @PsionicAudio

A fan will also add noise and get dust everywhere. Better to make the board and components better able to dissipate heat.

There’s a reason for the F word such people really deserve to be told.
I wonder why you didn’t do more mods to it.
    The reverb mod is easy.
You can reduce the grid leak resistors to 330K from 1M.
Maybe an episode on modding the drive stage.
