I was literally thinking of downloading my tree last night, so I could start adding them to other websites. I ended up not because I wasn't sure if it was worth it or if it would be difficult. Hi Aimee..after I find documents and add to me tree, I print them and add to binders of each side of my family..if I download my entire tree is it a Ged file and would I need a program to opened it? Family Treemaker or something else? Thank you
Yes. I wouldn’t bother downloading every document. That’s kind of a hassle. Census records are available everywhere so I wouldn’t worry about those. But if you have any more rear record, I would download that.
Hi Aimee! I found you today and I’ve binge watched as much as I could so far. I’ll definitely be watching all of your videos. What would you suggest when trying to find someone that just disappeared? I found this guy in a newspaper article but I can’t find him on the census before or after that date. It’s like he’s a ghost! 🤷🏼♀️
That’s tough. It depends on time period and a lot of other factors. I would check tax records, deeds. It would help to look at it. You should come and join coaching so we could work on it together. www.patreon.com/aimeecross/membership
@@AncestryAimee he was sentenced to a year on the chain gang back in 1899 for adultry with my relative and may be the real father and not my “ancestor”. I’ll check deeds after I watch that video on how. 🤣
Is Family Tree Maker still a viable software option? It looks like the last official release was 2019, although supposedly a 2024 version is coming. Any idea if the 2019 and 2024 versions will sync with Ancestry?
They sync now. They spoke of the 2024 release at Rootstech and showed. Off some of its features. Not sure why they haven’t released. 2019 does work now and I think it’s the best option for a sync with Ancestry but I too wish they would get the new version out.
@AncestryAimee 5 years between releases is a long time. I don't want to invest $100 on software that may no longer be supported in the near future. Any others that sync with Ancestry, now or on the horizon that you know of? Thanks for all your tips and tricks, very helpful!
@suepfister4593 Rootsmagic does but only person by person I think. Which would take forever. A lot of FTM employees are from Ukraine (although US based) so that has delayed things. I understand your concerns but I think it’s your best option. They always put it on sale at Rootstech and you can attend virtually.
Hi Aimee! This has been most helpful to me. I have downloaded my tree to my computer but when I went to open it on my computer, I can't read it. I tried opening it in Adobe, but that won't read it either. What do I do now? Or do I have to upload it to a family tree program? Thanks for your help.
I just got you i was listening i am not good doing this every one are dead like my great grandmother Lizzie Tate and my grandmother Thelma annie Lassier and my mother Eva Harris and my aunt Beatrice Harris and my Three uncles James Matthews Joe Harris Thomas Stewart all five children is Thelma annie Lassier those her children she was married to George Harris my mother and my aunt say carlye crump was there father and James Matthews father was Marshall Matthews and they say Thomas Stewart he put that name there as Stewart they told me they work on the farm and pick cotton they didn't have no education only one have educated Beatrice Harris they had to live in the project MC Douglas terrace with there mother Thelma annie Harris Thomas Stewart live at waltown and Joe Harris to james Matthews live at new jersey

Yes, you do need a Genealogy program to open a GED file
I only downloaded everything back to my grandparents.

You’re right, you can only read the file with a genealogy program.
I download my Ancestry tree about once a year, so that it's up to date with the new entries.

How do I download previous version
When you make a change on Ancestry it overwrites the current version. I don’t think there are previous versions.
