Here’s how the 929 became Mazda’s forgotten luxury car

- In this episode I provide the history of the Mazda 929, Mazda's first attempt at a luxury car for the North American market. When it reached this market in 1988, the styling was very boxy 80s, but still very boring, and few people associated Mazda with luxury car, instead Mazda was better known for economy and sports cars. An all-new model was introduced for 1992, and was more typical of the 90s with a much more rounded appearance. But it still never caught on, leading to its cancellation by 1995.
If Jim Rockford says the 929 is cool, I'm already sold.
Who?
@@samholdsworth420 Jim Rockford, James Garner's character name in the show the Rockford files. James Garner was a mazda commercial spokesman as well as a TV star
@@williamsinger4124i think he was trying to be funny.
But he drove a sweet camaro

I already miss the background music ☹
Same
Why was it removed?
@@rustyshackleford7265 See his community post from this past week, he explains why
Yes. I want to know too!! That background music made these videos ICONIC!!! What happened?
Same. It dosen't have the same vibe without it. Hopefully he can find another one as magnificent as that one
One of the best cars i've ever had. Mine was an '88, gold with burgundy interior. Sold it with 249k miles🙏🏾
Who gets happy when MOC post. Sometimes I save it for later when nobody can interrupt.
I worked at a Mazda dealer and we got a 929 traded in on a speed 3 and I fell in love with that car. The interior was so comfy and the whole car was so comfortable and easy to drive.
The seats were amazing
Lists Mazdas with actual names; I'm over here crying in Protege. I had a Protege5, one of the best cars I ever owned.
me too had the hot hatch and a 04 protege i foolishly tried to make it look like the MSP version 😅
its strange without the music from like every other video.
One notable exception to the rear-wheel drive rule of the 929's luxury competitors: The very popular Acura Legend was front-wheel drive.
I remember both versions of the 929 that came to the US. That first one really was boxy and nondescript, but I remember thinking the second one was pretty nice looking.
Thanks for finally doing this video! A family friend used to have a 2002 Millenia for their sons to drive. They purchased it used around 2007-08. It had custom wheels on it and they called it a "Mazdarati." Unfortunately, the youngest son totaled it around 2013 a week after getting his license.
I liked that bland 80's 929. I liked that it had a 30l v6 and was rear wheel drive.
I had one as a rental in '89 it was full of gadgets and was quite impressive.
Very underrated car. The second generation 929 looked like an Infiniti
Second generation 929 sedans are a stylish masterpiece, unlike the first generation that looked like a stick of butter.
5:05 I got to say that is one tidy dash. The digital read outs are well laid out and easy to read.
I'm a big Mazda fan and a current CX-9 driver, this episode was a real treat. Thank you!
Love to see Mazda content, thanks! Perhaps the 626 next? 👀
A combined 626/Mazda6 video would be great!
@@carexpertandy absolutely
Finally some Import video. This import vehicles are very important in car history.
Ford should have used this chassis somewhere in their lineup to help earn their brand a prestigious trademark! These were actually very nice machines.
The boxy 1980s 929 was very popular in Europe. I still se them on the road sometimes.
Those 80's 929 were built tough/strong
Could you do a video on the solely on a Mazda Millenia S? It was a beautifully designed and appointed luxury sedan. I had a black one with black leather. It was a tight driving/handling, smooth car. And it looked sharp.
Can you please do the Mazda 626
Always loved how the 929 had jaguar design vibes / proportions which made it sexy
Most 929s looked boring, IMO, but that early 90s one? Sexy af!
Mazda's 929 worked in Australia, but it was never a Mercedes competitor.
The previous 80s, sleek & gorgeous fwd 2.0 i4 929s are the ones to have on 2024.
XEDOS 9 was also an incredible cool car! rare today!
I currently have an 02 millenia, I tend to think these were more forgotten then the 929s, both beatiful cars tho
I had a 93 929, which had a JATCO/Nissan transmission from the Infiniti J30 and Nissan SUV/Trucks. It also had a 4.30 rear end, so off the line acceleration was quite good.
Yesssssssss! I've been waiting! Thanks!
Another great video. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏾👍🏾🤙🏾
they were very well regarded in other countries
Great 👍 job 👏 buddy. I didn't know the history. Thanks
Thanks for another great video! Here's one for the algorithm! :)
"Loose" has never been the pronunciation of Luce. It's pronounced the italian way, "lu-che", even in Japan... you hear it at 2:52 in the commercial.
Good information. Missing the background music. I believe "Stardrive" by Jeremy Blake is safe from copyright strikes.
929 was Fav cars as a kid💛❤
That Mazda "Luce" looks remarkably like a '73 Opel Manta!
Davis was right. Bland! 10:45 After the brilliant 1982-1986 Rest of World 929 Luce Hardtops and Cosmos...How could they....?
Oh and a half Kiwifruit for ya. Watch out for the pips 🥝✔️
The redesigned 1992 lacked an adjustable steering / wheel column as well as a glovebox due to the dual airbags, a deficiency for this class, although the solar sunroof was quite ingenious.
Mazda in Indonesia, in mid 90s
Like the vantrend,(cmiiw) a local production of wagons with rwd 1400cc engine and also its siblings the MR90 "baby boomer" (both actually "inspired" from late 80s 323 XGS Hatchback and to push national car industries) has this emblem
So does the 323 Familia Sedan
And the Cronos also has this emblem
the Mazda Millenia tho ❤❤❤❤
Millenia
@@GeeEm1313 auto correct took over.. i fixed it 😅
Good show , i remember it well
Another great video. What happened to the background music?
See his community post from this past week, he explains.
I love the background music
Getting closer to doing the mx-3 precidia and mx-6. Or even the mazda b series pickups
we got dads 929. Good car..Solid and safe
Mazda also had the Eunos brand as well at that time
I remember in the 90's being at some "country club" or resort place and there was a Sentia parked next to a Jaguar. Was a beautiful Rosewood red, looked very classy, body style of both cars looked similar. Took me a month to find out it was a Mazda "Japanese Jaguar" was shocked thought it was European. I've never forgotten that, was such an awesome color & shape. Proved to me color can really make or break the look of something.
That was a nice vehicle, and popular for a while.
That original Luce coupe was just gorgeous. It makes me think of a longer Alfa GTV a bit.
At one time we had a Mazda 626. We later spent time in the Bahama's where we found another Mazda 626 like the one owned but it was actually a Mazda 929. Is that possible?
Different cars
Time to do the Honda Civic Wagon.
The original and 77 look cool
929 was cool. I miss mine.
About dayum time!!!
Good video 😀
We probably would've thought the Xedos was "Exodus"
Mazda and Mitsubishi is two brands that have fallen so very far since the 90s.
As a kid in the 1980s there were quite a few Mazda 929s On the road especially where I lived in Boca. Then again there were always probably double the number of Toyota Is Cresidas Which have also long since gone extinct. I think Toyota was really it's only hit on competition in the late 1980s which was pre acura, Is Lexus, And infiniti. Then again we also had a brand Sterling dealership at 1 point here😆😆
Less more 35 years ago i saw a big bright blue metalic wagon.I was 9 or 10.All these years i was very curious what was that.i can remember only inscription "Mazda" on front grill , two couples of square lights and chrome plated front bumper . Now i know .That was Mazda Luce Legato 77'..Thank you.Regards from Poland.
I’ve had 4 Mazdas and they have all been great cars.
I really wanted a 95 929 badly but they broke very easily though so
I used to have a 1995 mazda millenia S
I've once seen a Sweden import 929 here in Germany at Classic Data headquarters. It had a tow hitch built like a whole Miata worth of steel :-D Other than that I had seen more Xedos 6 and Xedos 9 than 929s.
Was that Roy Firestone in one of the commercials? 😂 (3:08 mark)
The Mitsubishi Diamante next please
Love the video, but where'd the background music go?
Love the video without music! Much better! 😬
I really liked the looks of the 2nd generation 929, but it was pulled from the market and I was unable to find a used one even on a Mazda lot in metro LA.
I seem to recall that they had engine issues. Had bad reviews on consumer reports too.
Efini, Xedos, the luxury offshoot was branded Eunos here in Australia. Mazda must have lost a lot of money with their luxury arm.
Millennia is such an underrated car.
I agree , also one of the best looking sedans ever made , so happy to finally own one
1992 Mazda MX-3 was also sold with the original diamond badge!
In Germany we had both the 929 in different generations and the Xedos 9.
Thank you for covering the 929. I've always had a soft spot for them despite never owning one.
Gotta do infinity!Q45 was a popular car !
In europe and the uk we had 929 but these was quick replaced by 5he more smoothband curvy xedos range , the xedos 3 xedos 6 and xedos 9
I must admit, I never looked at Mazda. Thanks' Pat.
If this vehicle was manufactured in USA with rear wheel drive would have been been used for fleets police and taxi models
I remember looking at that late ‘80s generation thinking it was cool. By the mid-nineties, didn’t see them on the road anymore.
There was a 929 after the 95 model. It looked similar to the the 95 but much less swoopy. More conservative.
Then came the Eunos 800.
Can you do a video on the Nissan sx cars?
They also had the Eunos brand as well
So, you do this obscure of a car and haven’t done the Mitsu Diamante yet?
I want to see Jimbo J turn it😄
The 626 Cronos, Protégé 5
Has the Chevrolet Uplander or Isuzu Gemini been done before? It can be a good example to do.
I believe Mazda is trying to go more upmarket now with models like the CX-90, which is an upscale crossover.
I had an renalt encore haven't seen on in years
Strange that you didn't get the 1986 Luce hardtop. It was a much more 'American' car, in both styling and size. We got both in Oz; the smaller sedan that you got, and the larger hardtop.
Good lookin car!
Toyota Cressida please. The X chasssis cars have a long history with a ton of variants
I MAY be wrong, but I've seen that EXACT 929 Coupe at 2:56 (even with the same license plates) some months, or years ago... 🤔
Do Lincoln mark vi 1980-1983 please
It's that time again, let's check this one out.
I know you did a Rodeo episode, but how about an Izuzu Trooper one?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this!
Please do a video on the Legend 🙏🏼
That's what I was thinking.
I want one.
Wheres the background music?
The video seems dry without the background music
Take a look at the 1983 to 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger. It was fora brief moment a worthy competitor to the Mustang GT and Camaro Z28. Hell of a handler!!😁
