I love that even though her voice was not in the best shape during a performance and it cracks, you can still feel the emotions seeping out of her, which makes the cracks okay. And her final performance... oh I just LOVE that performance SO MUCH!
Jasmin Mariano Those were controlled, intentional cracks, there is nothing in her singing that suggests she might have strained, her vocal placement is so good.
Pre-Broadway is definitely my favourite version. You can feel the pain and the sadness from the very beginning until the last note. I rather this version above all the others, including the studio's one. It gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it.
Raul Marchiori I knowwwww. It was taken down for a little while and I couldn’t find the video anywhere and I was horrified because that is my absolute favorite version.
kinda late but TOTALLY AGREE it's rawer and even though it can be considered a bit messier that's what makes it so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
that's what i love about this song ..i mean it is the big solo and everything , but it not filled with high belting etc ..pure emotion..we need sara to write more musicals
For me the best version was the Tony performance. I just sat there in awe for a minute. It's definitely my favourite version and also the first I ever listened to :') ~Shooketh~
I am so impressed by this video. I can sense it wasn't easy to put together. I love Jessie Mueller. She seems remarkably consistent in this role/song. Although each one had slight differences, nuances. June 14th was my favorite. And all those following. However, I love all of them!
This is a great montage. One thing though -- I think that the first two clips should be reversed. The Sept 2015 was from when the show was at the ART in Cambridge. That rehearsal clip I believe is from Mar 2016 -- rehearsals in NYC just prior to the Broadway run.
Nusra Rozely Yeah. She is better the half step down. It really helps her because it is in her strongest belting register rather than the mix. It gives her a better ability to put emotion into it
Can someone tell me when you hear the difference with the keys when they changed the key in the song. I think it’s 3:03 but I’m not sure. Someone pls correct me
This is concerning. She obviously sounds great but she abandons her technique that she used in the dress rehearsal, her voice go tired possibly damaged, and they had to lower the key!!
Olivia Porter I get what you're saying but, I think they tell performers to hold back sometimes in rehearsals for belt parts and stuff so they don't overuse their voice to begin with. Also I much prefer it live in the theatre because she doesn't sound too soft like in the rehearsal which I think wouldn't travel as much if it was on stage you know. She's fine now her voice is still healthy 😊 EDIT when I say that though I mean only if they think they need to rest their voices or if they are starting to feel like they are straining etc. Otherwise in each rehearsal they would go full out as they would need to build up stamina for the part.
Olivia Porter No, it shows the evolution of her creating a character. Jessie Mueller is an amazing talent. She put more emotion into Jenna as time went on because the role requires grittiness; losing both parents and having a baby with an abusive husband really wears a person down.
J E J she actually did sustain damage from this role, which is why they lowered the key. when she originally learned the song, she learned it in a mixed head voice, but after the key change, she had to change it to a regular belt, meaning a loss of the technique that she’d gotten used to. she sang 8 shows a week, practiced in the times in between, sang through two cases of laryngitis (the most notable being her tony performance), and had to use a “country” accent which closes the throat a little more than one is used to if that’s not their normal accent. continuous belting like this with these circumstances will cause deterioration in the vocal cords, but luckily, the “cracks” is reversible. if her voice had lose its clarity and taken on a raspier and grittier tone that stayed through performances, then that would’ve been a problem (like kelly clarkson, for example since her voice gained its signature raspiness from poor vocal technique and overworking of the vocal cords over an extended period of time).
Decline?? Jessie sung with laryngitis and had to fully belt(she’s a legit soprano) so yeah her voice changed but now after letting her voice rest and not doing belting rolls her voice is better than ever
@@pureffm I think they're referring to the Tony performance in which she had been suffering from bronchitis
Personally, I believe this song, Burn (Hamilton) and No One Else (great comet) Are the best female balads of modern day theatre so far
AGREED!!!
Yes!!!
Great songs! When’s your start date for the list?
Agreed
YES! 😍
It’s like each crack gives you a look into her soul
Huh I didn't realize they changed the key :) But when she switched to the lower key it kinda clicked with me and I was like "oh yeah, this is right" 😂
Zoe Sax the original by Sarah isn’t so hight and it sounds way better lower
It gives me chills each time... and just when you think it can't get more emotional she proves you wrong.
Carter McDermott Ikr! I got chills through the WHOLE Video!
Y’all that last one...you could hear it. I mean I heard the emotion in all the other ones, but that last one...holy crap
The evolution of my uncontrollable sobbing
+ + + + +

Raul Marchiori TOTALLY agree
Raul Marchiori I knowwwww. It was taken down for a little while and I couldn’t find the video anywhere and I was horrified because that is my absolute favorite version.
completely agree 👏🏼👏🏼
kinda late but TOTALLY AGREE it's rawer and even though it can be considered a bit messier that's what makes it so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
June 14, 2016 is by far my favorite performance... so sad I'll never get to see Jessie as Jenna in person
I just missed Jessie, but my little sister said she was incredible. I really liked Betsy as Jenna, so I'm not too sad about it tbh.
No
Her final performance is just heartbreaking...it's even more emotional than normal
This is why Jessie Mueller is my idol
I will forever not be jealous of those who got to see Jessie live 😩😩😩😩
I think this song started to Alice Ripley her voice so they were like, "Oh shit... Yeah, let's lower the key."
... and then it became a song more about emotion then hitting the high notes which I don't mind at all. It's a beautiful song.
that's what i love about this song ..i mean it is the big solo and everything , but it not filled with high belting etc ..pure emotion..we need sara to write more musicals
ALICE RIPLEY HER VOICE HAHAHA OMGGG
“Alice Ripley her voice”
Rip
The ultimate Broadway mood is i'm crying over this while periodically drinking tea and steaming.
omg mooood 😂😂
Every performance I have heard of this song is different and I love it. She just feels it on stage you can tell
I like the lower key better
honestly? same
For me the best version was the Tony performance.
I just sat there in awe for a minute. It's definitely my favourite version and also the first I ever listened to :')
~Shooketh~
She’s so amazing and incredible cause she did it while sick I belive she had laryngitis or Bronchitis
The last one! The emotional voice cracks nearly made me cry myself!
I am so impressed by this video. I can sense it wasn't easy to put together. I love Jessie Mueller. She seems remarkably consistent in this role/song. Although each one had slight differences, nuances. June 14th was my favorite. And all those following. However, I love all of them!
I'm not crying....
YOU'RE CRYING
*B A K A*
Oh my god.
she’s incredible her voice is unbelievable, i aspire to be like her !!!
4:32 june 14, 2016..... holy cow the emotion!
I feel her Tony performance was the best. I liked it the best❤️❤️❤️
She's so good. Thank you for making this video!!
The Tony’s were ICONIC
God her voice is amazing
i’m actually in love with her

Yeah you're right, I realized that a little while after posting it that the rehearsal video was for broadway and not pre pre broadway thank you
I just woke up DON’T DO THIS TO ME.
Beautiful angel
Her last one tho 😭😭😭
I think any Broadway role will take a tole on your voice, but she still sounds great!
They changed the key between 1st and 23rd April?
Nusra Rozely probably right before the show opened on broadway which was on April 24
Nusra Rozely Yeah. She is better the half step down. It really helps her because it is in her strongest belting register rather than the mix. It gives her a better ability to put emotion into it
Also most likely to sustain her voice for an 8 show week
Holy Shit! June 14 😭😭😭😭😭
This is incredible. Do you think you could post the links to where you found these specifically the audios
Brianna O'Brien-Young good idea
Can someone tell me when you hear the difference with the keys when they changed the key in the song. I think it’s 3:03 but I’m not sure. Someone pls correct me
There are times when you look at her and it’s like, “Jessie has left the building.”
Where did you get the final performance?
I just love the orig cast and yeah der mostly Underrated
how this voice be real. it's a waste of life that i did not know this creature for many years
November 24 is my birthday!
June 14 is the best.
Do have a link to the June 14 one
This is concerning. She obviously sounds great but she abandons her technique that she used in the dress rehearsal, her voice go tired possibly damaged, and they had to lower the key!!
Olivia Porter and you wouldn’t get tired putting so much emotion into a song 8 times a week!?
Olivia Porter I get what you're saying but, I think they tell performers to hold back sometimes in rehearsals for belt parts and stuff so they don't overuse their voice to begin with. Also I much prefer it live in the theatre because she doesn't sound too soft like in the rehearsal which I think wouldn't travel as much if it was on stage you know. arleen123100 they generally probably would rarely have her go all out in rehearsals except for tech
she's so fucking talented
Everything you've ever known about emotion is wrong😭😭😭
Tony’s June 12 hands down
This was good.
Betsy Wolfe has now taken it to another level now (and without the lisp) and thoroughly kills it. Go see her NOW!
skiman68 what lisp?
All through the first 20 seconds, the "used to" at 39 seconds, again at 1:25...
Betsy Wolfe SUCKS. Jessie is queen. Jessie is life.
I honestly really love the sound of the lisp though
I like Betsy, but Jessie will always be the best.
she’s amazing, but i seriously fear that she damaged her voice by forcing a belt and abandoning technique
I did a cover of that!
Charlie Kapinos where can we find it
Huh
This video is so sad it literally just shows the decline of her voice ):
Olivia Porter No, it shows the evolution of her creating a character. Jessie Mueller is an amazing talent. She put more emotion into Jenna as time went on because the role requires grittiness; losing both parents and having a baby with an abusive husband really wears a person down.
Decline? Oh hoNey. N O

She is supposed to be about to go into labor. She is also sobbing, which does close the cords. And I thought they lowered it before broadway?
